    Chapter 11 The Critical Reception of René Crevel: The 1920s and Beyond Paul Cooke Born in 1900, Crevel was slightly too young to participate fully in the Dada movement.1 However, while fulfilling his military service in Paris’s Latour-Maubourg barracks, he met a number of young men – including François Baron, Georges Limbour, Max Morise and Roger Vitrac – who shared his interest in Dada’s anarchic spirit. On 14 April 1921 Crevel, Baron, and Vitrac attended the visite-conférence organized by the Dadaists at the Parisian church of Saint-Julien-le- Pauvre. Afterwards the three of them met up with Louis Aragon, one of the organizers of the afternoon’s event. As a result of this meeting the periodical aventure was born, with Crevel named as gérant. Only three issues would appear, with the editorial team splitting in February 1922 over the preparation of the Congrès du Palais (with Vitrac supporting Breton and the organizing committee, while Crevel and the others refused to abandon Tzara). Crevel would again defend Tzara against the proto-Surrealist grouping during the staging of Le Cœur à gaz at the Théâtre Michel in July 1923. At the very start of his career as a writer, therefore, it is clear that Dada was a significant influence for Crevel.2 However, despite siding with Tzara in the summer of 1923, it would not be long before Crevel was reconciled with Breton, with the latter naming him in the 1924 Manifeste as one of those who had “fait acte de SURRÉALISME ABSOLU” (Breton 1988: 328). It is as a Surrealist novelist and essayist that Crevel is remembered in literary history.

Breton innovated ways in which text and image could be united through chance association to create new, poetic word-image combinations. His ideas about accessing the unconscious and using symbols for self- expression served as a fundamental conceptual building block for New York artists in the 1940s.     Surrealism, Occultism and Politics This volume examines the relationship between occultism and Surrealism, specif- ically exploring the reception and appropriation of occult thought, motifs, tropes and techniques by surrealist artists and writers in Europe and the Americas from the 1920s through the 1960s. Its central focus is the specific use of occultism as a site of political and social resistance, ideological contestation, subversion and revolution. Additional focus is placed on the ways occultism was implicated in surrealist dis- courses on identity, gender, sexuality, utopianism and radicalism. Dr. Tessel M.     VICTOR HUGO AND SURREALISM: PHANTOM DRAWINGS, AUTOMATISM, AND THE OCCULT by JILL ALLISON MILLER Under the Direction of Professor Evan Firestone ABSTRACT During Victor Hugo’s exile on the Channel island of Jersey, between 1853-1855 he and his family conducted almost two hundred séances in which they allegedly received messages and drawings from famous deceased personalities. Besides being a writer and poet, Hugo was also a prolific artist who experimented with automatist and experimental techniques to create thousands of images. Many Surrealist figures, including André Breton, Robert Desnos, André Masson, and Max Ernst, admired aspects of Hugo’s art and writing. Comparing Hugo’s experimental art, séance writings, and attitudes towards psychic material to the art and ideas of Breton and his circle opens up substantial new insights on Victor Hugo as a precursor to Surrealism and on the movement’s connection to the nineteenth century.     Futurism An artistic movement originating in Italy around 1909 whose aim was to express the energetic, dynamic, and violent quality of contemporary life, especially as embodied in the motion and force of modern machinery. The term was coined by Filippo Marinetti, who published a manifesto glorifying the new technology of the automobile and the beauty of its speed and power. Italian painter, sculptor, and theorist. Mobilized in the declaration of war, Boccioni was assigned at an artillery regiment. Boccioni accidentally was thrown from his horse during a cavalry training exercise and was trampled.
