During this time, William Brymner became her teacher and, with his encouragement, Coonan and fellow artist Henrietta Mabel May traveled to France, Belgium and Holland in 1912. This trip allowed Coonan to see the work of the French Impressionists and greatly expanded her artistic horizons. She returned to France in 1920, enabled by a traveling grant awarded by the National Gallery of Canada. This trip proved to be significant, and subsequently her work began to indicate modernist sensibilities through increasingly simplified portraits and landscapes. Also in 1920, she became a member of the important Beaver Hall Group, and exhibited regularly at the Art Association of Montreal and the Royal Canadian Academy. Coonan frequently traveled to the Quebec countryside to paint en plein air, and this work illustrates her clear admiration of her surroundings. With its harmonious colour palette and simplified forms, Quebec Landscape is a charming work from this important female modernist. MacD 1913/14, Thoreau MacDonald" 5 1/2 x 8 7/8 inches 14 x 22.5 centimeters Provenance: Mr. & Mrs. A. Crawford Kenny Private Collection, Toronto Exhibited: Literature: After he returned from Germany, Lawren Harris’s first Canadian sketching trip was to Quebec’s Laurentians in fall 1908, which resulted in his first major Canadian landscape canvas, Deserted Barn, Laurentians. In 1911 Harris met J.E.H. MacDonald, and in the fall of 1913, the soon-to-be fellow Group of Seven artists traveled to the Laurentians. Harris did a number of small panels on this trip, including Laurentians, verified by the verso inscription by MacDonald’s son, Thoreau - although it is uncertain whether this indicates the painting was once in Thoreau's possession. In some of Harris’s Laurentian scenes he used a select palette of warm and cool earth tones, and here he used primarily taupe, umber, brown and orange. The central haystacks, with their unusual forms, are a focal point, contrasted with long, fluid brush-strokes that give rhythm and flow to the surrounding cultivated land. In the hills behind, the oranges and golds of autumn smoulder through the trees. Harris makes the juxtaposition of rustic farmland and wild nature vital and fresh in this engaging rural scene. Borderline Research Histories of Art between Canada and the United States, c. 1965–1975 Adam Douglas Swinton Welch A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Adam Douglas Swinton Welch 2019 Borderline Research Histories of Art between Canada and the United States, c. 1965–1975 Adam Douglas Swinton Welch Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Taking General Idea’s “Borderline Research” request, which appeared in the first issue of FILE Megazine (1972), as a model, this dissertation presents a composite set of histories. Through a comparative case approach, I present eight scenes which register and enact larger political, social, and aesthetic tendencies in art between Canada and the United States from 1965 to 1975. These cases include Jack Bush’s relationship with the critic Clement Greenberg; Brydon Smith’s first decade as curator at the National Gallery of Canada (1967–1975); the exhibition New York 13 (1969) at the Vancouver Art Gallery; Greg Curnoe’s debt to New York Neo-dada; Joyce Wieland living in New York and making work for exhibition in Toronto (1962–1972); Barry Lord and Gail Dexter’s involvement with the Canadian Liberation Movement (1970–1975); the use of surrogates and copies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1967–1972); and the Eternal Network performance event, Decca Dance, in Los Angeles (1974). Relying heavily on my work in institutional archives, artists’ fonds, and research interviews, I establish chronologies and describe events. By the close of my study, in the mid-1970s, the movement of art and ideas was eased between Canada and the United States, anticipating the advent of a globalized art world.

MaRCH 2021 ONlINe aUCTION JULY 15, 2020 15, JULY Sale March 4, 2020 – March 25, 2021 001 HERBERT BRANDL 1959 - Austrian Ohne Titel oil on canvas on verso signed and dated 2006 74 3/4 x 63 inches 189.9 x 160 centimeters Provenance: Galerie Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman, Austria Private Collection, Austria Sold sale of Zeitgenössische Kunst, im Kinsky Auktionhaus, May 10, 2011, lot 141 Collection of Joey & Toby Tanenbaum, Toronto Exhibited: Literature: This canvas by Herbert Brandl features a bluish teal ground populated by pale yellow brushstrokes sweeping from side to side. As the colours intermingle and separate, a veil of drips wanders down, slowly dissolving into (the ether of) the background. Brandl’s painterly mastery saturates this work. With a few simple, confident and elegant strokes, he creates an abstract form which can be almost instantly recognized as light reflecting on water. Light never materializes into an object, it occurs in time; and on the surface of water it always shimmers, flickering from one form to another. Brandl’s decades long preoccupation with pictorial form and the conceptual underpinnings of the image is clearly visible in this work. Here, Brandl captures something essential in an almost monumental format, and presents it as something still wavering between the abstract and concrete. Like an illusion or an apparition, it appears unmistakable, yet one cannot be sure of its true nature. Brandl’s work has been exhibited all over the world, including Biennale de Paris (1985), the São Paulo Art Biennale (1989), Documenta IX (1992), Kunsthalle Basel (1999) and the Venice Biennale (2007).
