Rao © 2015 Adriana Nicole Cerami ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Adriana Nicole Cerami: Mafia Motifs in Andrea Camilleri’s Detective Montalbano Novels: From the Culture and Breakdown of Omertà to Mafia as a Scapegoat for the Failure of State (Under the direction of Ennio I. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction. -

Esto permite disfrutar de la observación de las aves y otras muchas especies, no solo en las zonas ribereñas sino también en el espacio urbano, donde el ritmo tranquilo de la ciudad per- mite avistar numerosas especies que eligen para su hábitat la cercanía humana y conviven con nosotros sin dificultad. Con esta publicación, que incluye diversas rutas por la ciudad y alrededores, el Ayuntamiento de Zamora quiere abrir la puerta a esta interesante tendencia de la observación y estudio de los espacios naturales, tal como hace el turismo ornitológico y medioambiental, que además de promover los recursos locales abre también otras posibilidades relacionadas con la interpretación ambiental y la educación. Pero de manera especial nos permite acercarnos a los distintos espacios que ofrece la ciudad con de- tallismo y respeto, al tiempo que se divulga una parte importante de la avifauna y del patrimonio natural de Zamora. 1 ENCLOSURE SIZE IN CAPTIVE WILD MAMMALS: A comparison between UK zoological collections and the wild. JORDI CASAMITJANA1 Abstract A comparison was made between the average enclosure size of a random sample of mammals kept during the years 2000- 2001 in a random sample of UK zoological collections and the minimum home range of these taxa in the wild. Allometric laws were used to estimate the home range area, while direct observation from videotaped visits to the collections was used to estimate enclosure size area. The results showed that, as an average, the average enclosure size had an area 100 times smaller than the minimum home range. Key words: mammal, zoo, enclosure size, allometric, megafauna, captivity, home range Introduction The zoo debate Nowadays, many people choose not to go to zoos because they consider that either it is wrong to keep wild animals in captivity as a matter of principle, or the conditions the animals are kept in zoos are unacceptable. The zoo community, and its supporters, think otherwise, and this difference of opinion is what constitute the so called ‘zoo debate’. It is not unusual that people engaged in such debate try to prove their points either by quoting ‘expert’ opinion or by referring to facts, evidence and reports about zoo’s activities. However, many of these ‘facts’ are missing because no objective research has ever been developed to find them. One of the most common arguments used in the zoo debate refers to the space available to captive animals kept in zoos. The anti-zoo side of the debate often criticises enclosures for being too small, while zoo advocates tend to respond that they are big enough, or that size ‘does not matter’. -

Widdows Submitted in fulfilment of the academic requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Discipline of Ecological Sciences School of Life Sciences College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg Campus 2015 i ABSTRACT Urbanization is one of the most damaging and rapidly expanding forms of anthropogenic landscape modification and is having profound consequences on biodiversity worldwide. The global increase in urbanization has resulted in exclusion of many carnivore species from human- altered landscapes due to a variety of anthropogenic impacts. However, despite the negative impacts of urbanization on carnivores, certain species such as large-spotted genets (Genetta tigrina) exhibit an ability to persist within urban areas. Despite their extensive distribution range, large-spotted genets are poorly studied in comparison to other African carnivores, with a handful of studies conducted on genetics, activity patterns and diet. Furthermore, no studies have focused on their ecology in an urban environment. There have been increasing reports of large-spotted genets within urban areas throughout KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mosaic of patches of native vegetation within this urban landscape provides habitats for a variety of wildlife species. The main aim of the study was to investigate the ecology of large-spotted genets within an urban landscape and to determine what factors facilitate their ability to persist in an urban environment. Residential interviews were conducted to ascertain information pertaining to behavioural observations, land use as well as wildlife conflict and public perceptions of genets. Chi-square (2) goodness-of-fit tests were used to determine significant differences in the frequency of responses. -

Introduction Zoology, like other branches of the natural sciences, has expanded greatly from the time of Aristotle, who may be regarded as its founder, to the present day. Zoology started from simple descriptions of animals, based in part on facts and in part on fantasy. Century after century, accounts became increasingly detailed, extending from representations of external features to anatomical descriptions of internal organs, while zoological collections were established to buttress such descriptions with reference material. Increasingly detailed knowledge of the different animal species afforded in the XVIII cent. the adoption of the Linnaean cataloguing system, still valid to this date. Two thousand years of zoological work also set the stage for Darwin’s unifying theory of evolution, which provided an explanation for the mechanisms responsible for the diversity of all existing animal species, of the relationships among species, and between species and their environment. Cetology (cetacean zoology) followed a similar development, although at a slower pace with respect to most branches of zoology. This was because cetaceans have never been easy to study. Compared to most species, and even to most mammals, cetaceans are relatively rare, and the body size of even the smallest species (let alone the largest) made it often problematic to bring specimens to a laboratory or to a collection for detailed investigation. -

It's always a thrill to get a below-eye-level look at a raptor like a Red Kite! Photo by guide Marcelo Padua. September is a lovely time to visit southern France. From the Camargue, where golden fields of ripening rice stretched to the horizons and reed beds thrashed before strong winds, to the Pyrenees, where rumpled mountains scraped craggy fingers against blue skies and conifer forests massed darkly against the rocks, the landscape provided a beautiful backdrop against which to look for the region's special birds. And there were plenty to search out! Our weather in the lowlands was hot and dry -- and rather windy for a couple of days -- and the vegetation around the Camargue was parched and crispy after months with no rain. The fine, settled weather may have impacted somewhat the number of migrants we saw (no need for them to stop!), but it also allowed us to enjoy our superb Provençal dinners al fresco, under the dense cover of well-cropped trees in our hotel's courtyard. The lovely weather continued in the mountains, with cloudless skies and comfortable temperatures (mostly -- though some of those mornings were chilly) making birding pleasant. Again though, the settled weather seemed to impact migration, with little movement seen during our stay. We started our tour with four days in the Camargue region, near the mouth of the Rhone River.
