The Hockey Hall of Famer and former Sabres defenseman is the seventh alumnus to serve as the team’s head coach.

Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first ever Final appearance in 2016. Named an assistant coach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure.

A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota. During his nine seasons at the helm, Housley turned around the school’s program while also accepting numerous opportunities to coach for Team USA at the international level.

MURRAY WEEK-TO-WEEK Penguins goalie Matt Murray left Monday’s overtime win against Philadelphia late in the second period following a collision with Jake Voracek. Head coach Mike Sullivan announced the next day that Murray is week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Murray’s injury thrusts Tristan Jarry into the spotlight as the No. 1 goalie. Pittsburgh has earned points in all four of Jarry’s appearances this season (2-0-2). Jarry is looking to became the first Penguins goalie other than Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury to earn the victory in three straight Pittsburgh wins since Brent Johnson between October 15-18, 2010. Casey DeSmith was recalled to serve as Jarry’s backup. DeSmith saw his first NHL action in late October, making his NHL debut on Oct. 29 in Winnipeg. DeSmith had started every game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in November, going 6-2-1.

MALKIN A GTD Evgeni Malkin, who has missed the past four games, is a game time decision for tonight’s contest in Buffalo after participating in a full contract practice yesterday. The Penguins’ third-leading scorer this year, Malkin has had points in each of his past four games against the Sabres (2G-4A-6PTS).

STREAK TIME Captain Sidney Crosby carries a four-game point streak (4G-5A-9PTS) into tonight’s contest. If he records a point against Buffalo, he’ll establish a new season-long run. Going back further, Crosby has at least one point in six of his past seven contests (5G-7A-12PTS). Crosby is coming off back-to-back three-point night, his first such three-point efforts of the year. Jake Guentzel scored twice against the Flyers, including his second goal with just over a minute left in regulation that tied the score at 4-4. Guentzel has six goals in his past six contests. Phil Kessel helped set up Crosby’s game-winning overtime goal against Philadelphia, running Kessel’s point streak to four games (3G- 5A-8PTS). If he gets a point tonight, Kessel will equal his season-long point streak of five games, which he has done twice. Heading into yesterday’s final night of the month, Kessel’s 19 points (7G-12A) were tied for second most in the NHL during the month of November, one behind league-leader Nate MacKinnon of Colorado.

SCHEDULE SHIFT After spending much of the first two months of the season playing teams from the Western Conference, the Penguins are in the midst of a lengthy run against mostly Eastern Conference clubs, and a majority of those contests against Metro Division foes. Between tonight’s visit to Buffalo and the final game before Pittsburgh’s bye week January 7, the Penguins will play 13 of 18 games against teams from the East. Eight of those 13 games will be versus Metro teams. This year, the Penguins have gone 3-1 against the Metropolitan Division and 8-4 overall against Eastern Conference teams.

CAN WE HAVE A REPEAT? Last season, the Penguins entered the month of December with a 13-7-3 record, and they had been outscored by two goals (67-69). This year, the club has a fairly similar record (13-10-3) while playing three more games as the third month begins. Pittsburgh has also been outscored by 15 goals (74-89) this season. Last year, the Penguins took off in December, going 12-1-2 to firmly entrench themselves near the top of the NHL standings. Evgeni Malkin (21 points), Sidney Crosby (20 points) and Justin Schultz (18 points) were the NHL’s three-highest scorers for the month, as the Pens led the NHL with 64 goals in 15 games.

USING THE ADVANTAGE Pittsburgh scored three times on the man-advantage in Saturday’s win against Tampa Bay, with all three goals coming when the Penguins held a 5-on-3 two-man advantage. That marked the third time this year that the Penguins have scored three power-play goals in a single game. The Penguins have scored a power-play goal in four-straight games entering tonight (7 for 16; 43.8%).

FAST FACTS FROM #PITvsPHI *Captain Sidney Crosby scored the overtime game-winning goal, his 11th career regular-season game-winning goal. That marker tied him with Evgeni Malkin and Mario Lemieux for the all-time franchise record for regular-season OT goals. *Crosby’s 25 career overtime points are also a franchise record, one higher than Malkin’s total. *Before leaving due to injury, Matt Murray assisted Jake Guentzel’s opening goal. Murray joined Tristan Jarry and Antti Niemi as Pens goalies who have been credited with assists this year. The last time the Penguins had three goalies collect assists in a single season was 1990-91 (Tom Barrasso; Wendell Young; and Frank Pietrangelo). *Justin Schultz had his second-straight two-assist game. He has a season-long three-game point streak (5 assists total). *Patric Hornqvist has a season-long three-game point streak (1G-2A) after scoring versus the Flyers. *Kris Letang has seven assists in his last eight games after earning the primary helper on Crosby’s OT goal. Letang’s OT helper was the 14th overtime assist of his career, tying him with Crosby for the most such helpers in club history. *As of Nov. 30, only Columbus and New Jersey (9 each) have played more OT games this year than the Pens (8 thus far).
