VI, NO. 1 / JUNE 2014: 7-17, ISSN 2067-3655, www.metajournal.org Introduction Oleg Bernaz, Fabio Bruschi, Délia Popa, Gábor Tverdota Université catholique de Louvain S’inscrivant dans le cadre de la problématique théorique générale d’une possible articulation entre la psychologie comprise en tant que science de l’individu et la sociologie comprise en tant que science de la collectivité, le rapport entre la psychologie des profondeurs et les théories critiques de la société est un indicateur de premier ordre des dilemmes qu’ont pu traverser ceux parmi les intellectuels du siècle passé qui ont conçu leur activité en tant qu’intervention au sein de la société et de l’histoire. Les diverses tentatives d’appréhender la relation entre psychanalyse et critique sociale ne valent cependant pas uniquement comme symptômes des conceptions et des convictions tant conscientes qu’inconscientes du rôle social et historial des intellectuels, mais également comme autant de remémorations des façons dont des générations entières d’acteurs historiques ont vécu et tenté de comprendre les événements marquants du siècle passé. Notre dossier thématique questionne quelques épisodes de cette histoire, à partir d’un point de vue spécifique, qui est celui de l’apport d’un modèle de l’intervention intellectuelle pour la critique sociale tel qu’on peut le construire en clé psychanalytique. D’un côté, un tel questionnement promet une prise de conscience des précédents historiques des essais contemporains d’articuler ces deux champs pratiques et, d’un autre côté, il rend possible la réactualisation du potentiel critique de tentatives oubliées, refoulées ou condamnées en raison de la fonction qu’elles ont eue dans des conjonctures différentes de la nôtre. Il en ressort que l’esprit de cette recherche n’est pas purement historique : notre intérêt pour l’héritage du passé est guidé par l’intuition 7 META: Research in Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, and Practical Philosophy – VI (1) / 2014 d’une actualité profonde des enjeux qui ont été soulevés dans le sillage du questionnement séculaire sur le rapport entre les diverses formes de la critique sociale et la science de l’inconscient, actualité dont témoigne le nombre croissant de publications consacrées à divers aspects de cette problématique1.

Jones Professor of Philosophy, Bryn Mawr College Abstract This essay explores Gadamer’s ambivalent relationship with modernity. Gadamer is a prominent critic of the Enlightenment project. His criticisms are both theoretical and practical. Theoretically, representationalism is at the center of modern epistemology for Gadamer. Practically, Gadamer sees the demotion of prudence ( phronesis ) as fundamental to the “bad” Enlightenment. Gadamer’s attempt to revive an appreciation of rhetoric is a way to the join the theoretical and practical dimensions of speech and life. The central representative philosopher of the Enlightenment for Gadamer is Kant. The antithetical thinker is Aristotle. Gadamer would have his Kant and his Aristotle too.     Modernity and secularization in The Legitimacy of the Modern Age by Hans Blumenberg Thierry Gontier – Université de Lyon 3 / Institut Universitaire de France To ask the question concerning ‘legitimacy in the modern era’ represents an act characteristic of post-modernity, i.e. of a modernity which is suspicious of its own foundations. One of the recurrent forms of this question consists in asking whether the values proclaimed by modernity, the values of what we call ‘the Enlightenment’ (secularism, the autonomy of reason, progress, political liberalism, etc.), are or are not authentic values. Is modernity, in the words of Nietzsche, a high or a low civilization? Is it in particular a substitute for Christian theology or the moment at which values are created? Behind these apparently historical questions another lies hidden, namely the relief of that modernity in the recovery of the intellectual act by which it was inaugurated. Does this represent a reinstatement of the lost link with a premodern theology or the movement of the project of autonomy proclaimed by modernity towards its fulfilment? These are issues which were more than adequately addressed by Eric Voegelin, and we would certainly not wish to summarize his position as being ‘anti-modern’. Today, I would like to approach these questions in relation to Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996) and more especially his work The Legitimacy of the Modern Age (first edition, 1966; second edition, significantly revised and enlarged, published between 1973 and 1976.     The Phenomenological Anthropology of Hans Blumenberg Franz Josef Wetz Abstract: Blumenberg‘s phenomenological anthropology replaces the traditional question: What is the human being? with the following question: How is being human even possible? This question expresses a great mistrust over the ability of copying with human life. According to Blumenberg, man can survive only when he keeps distance from the threatening world in a literal as well as metaphorical sense. As an upright animal, who sees and can be seen, he can experience being hunted but also being the hunter in order to bring himself into safety from what threatens him as well as succeeding in hunting. In a metaphorical sense, man takes distance from the almighty reality through myths, religion, science, technology, art, resp . culture as reliable ways to cope with anxiety and threats in this, for him, dangerous and nameless world. Hans Blumenberg spent many years developing what could be called a phe- nomenological anthropology, a project which was never brought to final comple- tion. Although he explored many particular aspects of this project in almost every one of the works published during his lifetime, he offered his most detailed contributions to this task in the two volumes, Zu den Sachen und Zurück and Beschreibung des Menschen, which were edited on the basis of his posthumous notes and papers. In both cases Blumenberg begins the discus- sion with a number of critical reflections on the thought of Edmund Husserl. The aim of Blumenberg’s investigations is both to expose the incoheren- cies in Husserl’s phenomenology and to reveal the conditions of possibility for the original phenomenological project which Husserl himself overlooked or was unwilling to acknowledge.

    1 Hans Blumenberg’s Anthropology of Instrumental Reason Culture, Modernity, and Self-Preservation Francis Plagne ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9600-4609 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Melbourne June 2017 1 2 Abstract: This thesis argues that a notion of biological self-preservation is central to the philosophical anthropology of Hans Blumenberg. It shows how Blumenberg adopts an understanding of the human being developed in early 20th century German Philosophical Anthropology, particularly in the naturalistic variant proposed by Arnold Gehlen. This theory of the human argues that the unique biological make-up of the human being should be the central consideration in the interpretation of human life and its production (culture). Against the backdrop of an archaic experience of the power of nature that he calls ‘the absolutism of reality’, Blumenberg adopts this ‘anthropobiological’ paradigm and uses it as the basis for a functional interpretation of culture centred on human self-preservation. The thesis demonstrates that this philosophical anthropology is not only descriptive, but also has normative and critical aspects. Blumenberg proposes an unsurpassable limit in the possible transformations of the human relationship to nature, denying the possibility of a receptive opening to nature that would break with instrumental mastery. This anthropological limit is formulated in critical dialogue with Martin Heidegger’s work and Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment, both of which look forward to a reconciled relationship between the human and non-human. It then argues that Blumenberg’s interpretation and defence of modernity is also grounded in his philosophical anthropology.

In doing so, he had to bridge an ontological gap, a gap between the thinking of the gods and that of humans. Herskowitz Wolfson College, University of Oxford, Oxford OX2 6UD, UK; [email protected] Abstract: This article argues that Karl Löwith’s thesis of secularization—in brief, that while modern philosophical notions present themselves as secular, they are in fact secularized, that is, they preserve features of the theological background they repress and remain determined by it—can serve as a productive hermeneutical key for framing and understanding an important strand in the twentieth century Jewish response to Heidegger’s philosophy. It takes Ernst Cassirer, Leo Strauss, and Martin Buber as test-cases and demonstrates that these three Jewish thinkers interpreted various categories of Heidegger’s Being and Time to be not simply secular but secularized Christian categories that continue to bear the mark of their theological origin even in their now-secular application and context. Una reevaluación del debate Löwith-blumenberg en torno al surgimiento de la modernidad [email protected] Recepción: 27/07/2020 Aceptación: 08/08/2020 Karl Löwith’s Meaning in History presents the emergence of modern philosophy of history as a secularization of medieval theology of history. His thesis holds that modern historical consciousness transposes into the immanent frame a constitutively transcendent element: the Christian history of salvation. In The Legitimacy of the Modern Age Hans Blumenberg impugns Löwith’s theory, by arguing that it works on the erroneous assumption that there would be a substantial content originally possessed by medieval Christianity and only later illegitimately appropriated by modernity. Blumenberg proposes that Löwith’s “transposition” hypothesis must be replaced by his own “reoccupation”: the modern vision of history would have thus taken up the place of Christian eschatology. This paper contends that Blumenberg fails to see that he and his opponent are arguing at different epistemological levels: while Blumenberg’s discussion operates at the level of the efficient causation of history, Löwith’s is focused on the philosophical root of the teleology of the modern idea of progress, which explains this notion as a transposition of the eschaton into a purely immanent telos.
