  • Lotto Lang Syne
RYAN MERRIMAN — WRITING SAMPLE Lotto Lang Syne I started seeing Kyle at the Inn Cahoots bar shortly after the Cavs fired Mike Brown. God, the first time I saw him, he was just a scrawny, twenty-something-year-old kid. By the time the Browns had fired Eric Mangini, he came to the bar at least once or twice a week, and we had small talk. By the time the Indians fired Manny Acta, he came to the bar almost every day, as he got laid off as a teacher and had more free time. So we spent that extra free time bitching about Cleveland sports. Actually, I just bitched and complained. Kyle didn’t know too much about Cleveland sports, but he knew enough about Progressive Field. “Let me tell you something,” he would say. “I have been to Progressive Field, and the Hot Dog Races are intense. Onion always appears to have a shot, but then Ketchup just pulls away, which is crap.” He was at least interested in what I had to say about sports, that by the time the Cavs rehired Mike Brown, we had gone to watch the Indians play the Red Sox and White Sox. Kyle didn’t say much about the game, other than when something big happened, but he said enough about the Hot Dog Races, hot dogs, and beer. Even though we went to the games and always met up at the bar, it was still surprising to see him that one Saturday at Parmatown Mall. As I walked towards J.C.

  • TRANSFORMING NARRATIVE ENCOUNTERS Anne Murray Orr
TRANSFORMING NARRATIVE ENCOUNTERS Anne Murray Orr & Margaret Olson St. Francis Xavier University In this article, two teacher educators examine two curriculum moments they have experienced, one with children and the other with pre‐service teachers. They find possibilities for shifts in their understandings and insights into their own identity making and that of students. Drawing upon Connelly and Clandinin’s (1992) notion of teachers as curriculum makers, they consider how students shape curriculum alongside teachers in classrooms. Students’ and teachers’ actions and words shape not only events of the classroom but also ways that they compose and recompose their lives in school. In this way, curriculum making and identity making become intertwined.

  • “WE ARE CANADIAN!” – REACTIONS Anne Murray
“WE ARE CANADIAN!” – REACTIONS Anne Murray - retired snowbird Pretty darn good! John McGovern - Choral Arranger for “We Are Canadian!” The moving lyrics and beautiful melodies of “We Are Canadian!” provided me with a vast canvas of Canadian experience from primeval times to today. From this powerful material I was inspired to develop a choral arrangement and piano part, reflecting the various images in an individual style for each verse, followed by the rousing chorus. I hope many Canadians will have the opportunity to hear the choral version of this epic song which Ellis and Carey have so lovingly created to reflect what it is for each one of us to truly be Canadian... Thanks again for the opportunity to arrange this beautiful song in praise of our special place on Earth! Anne Axworthy – Director, Voices in Harmony Choir Our chorus is proud and honoured to be the first to sing the 4-part arrangement of “We Are Canadian!” This wonderful song resonated with the entire membership at its debut at our first rehearsal. At the end, although they had just been introduced to it, they insisted on singing it in its entirety, with great heart and enthusiasm. All Canadians deserve to hear this uplifting tribute to Canada. Roxanne Goodman – Director, Great Big Soul Project Choir This is a wonderful, beautiful and powerful song and the video is just great! Jody Benjamin – Director, Ottawa Shout Sisters Choir I just now had a chance to listen to your lovely song. The tears are still in my eyes. It really is great. Dai Bassett – Songwriter/Entertainer Oh my goodness, Ellis.

Singer Jeff Miller finds a Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. welcoming venue at Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com International Gay Rodeo Association events. Country music, like blues and jazz, is a peculiarly American musical form. With its Publicity photograph provided by Outright roots in the folk ballads of England, Scotland, and Ireland, country music was born in Speakers and Talent the blend of the "hillbilly" music of the Appalachian mountains, the African-American Bureau. blues of the deep South, and the wailing twang of the cowboy music of the West. Courtesy Outright Speakers and Talent But country music is more than a combination of various musical traditions. Lyrics give Bureau. life to country music and those lyrics tell the real stories of ordinary people. Country music celebrates the trials and triumphs, loves and losses in the lives of small town, rural, and, more recently, urban, mostly white, working people. Because of its focus on conservative social groups and old-fashioned values, country music has often been associated with bigotry, intolerance, and jingoistic patriotism. However, every kind of personal lifestyle, quirk, and foible is represented in the backroads and small towns of the United States, and country music has found room to discuss most of them frankly. Although country is in some ways one of the most conservative of musical genres, country songs cover a wider range of topics than almost any other type of popular music. Gay and lesbian audiences are attracted to the country scene for several reasons.
