SMARTPHONE DEPOSITS

GAIN INTERESTBY DOUG STORUM [email protected]

The use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to deposit checks is catching up in popularity among consumers, according to recent surveys com- missioned by the Federal Reserve and the American Bankers Association. One in eight Americans deposited a check using a mobile device within the past year, according to a national survey released earlier this month by the association. As more consumers begin to take advantage of online banking, the industry has been pressed to keep up with the demand, pouring money into the technol- ogy to provide convenience and security for customers. The most common mobile-banking activities con- tinue to be reviewing account balances, monitoring recent transactions or transferring money between accounts. More than 75 million Americans use their smartphones for mobile banking, and 38 percent of those tried depositing a check using their smartphone in the past year, up from 21 percent in 2012, according to the most recent Federal Reserve survey. Depositing a check using a mobile device is as simple as snapping a picture of the front and back of a paper check, then electronically sending it into an account. “Convenience and saving time are paramount for today’s consumer, so it is no surprise that mobile deposit is gaining traction with banks and their custom- ers,” said Nessa Feddis, the ABA’s senior vice president and deputy chief counsel for consumer protection and Mobile banking by the numbers payments. Pearce said some customers were having trouble taking good photographs of checks. “We were relying on customers being good photographers. Now with letting them use a video camera, they just hover over the check, send the video, and we can capture a good still off of the video.” Pearce pointed out that small-busi- ness owners who use mobile deposits see an improvement in cash flow and save time. “They are depositing checks from customers immediately and can access the money the next day,” he said. “Plus they don’t have to make a trip to a branch bank.”

Potential pitfalls Consumer Reports recently pub- lished a story about potential pitfalls, especially where personal checks are concerned. It pointed out that federal regulations dictate how long banks can hold checks before making the funds available – and it isn’t very long. Finally, Lea stressed that candi- dates be open to feedback and coach- ing. A recruiter’s job is to sell a candi- date to a client company. Your job is to help the recruiter sell you. Recruiters are incredibly aware of what their clients are looking for in new hires. They can provide keen insights to help you shine when you are in front of hiring managers. According to Lea, “I give can- didates open feedback about their résumés and professional dress. I also coach them through the interview process as well as during the salary negotiation stage.” Many job seekers remain skeptical about the benefits of working with a recruiter in general and many are especially averse to taking tempo- rary assignments. They worry that a contract assignment will negatively impact their unemployment benefits or impede their search for full-time employment. Lea offered a different perspective, “Temporary positions can help keep your skills fresh and you may even add new skills and industry experi- ence to your résumé,” he said. “Proj- ect work through a temporary assign- ment is also a great way to grow your network. And, there is no better way to test the waters to see if you like a company culture should a permanent position come available.” One thing that job seekers often lose sight of is that a professional recruiter’s reputation – and ulti- mately their paycheck – are driven by the quality of candidates they provide to their client companies. It helps to enter into a recruiting partnership with this awareness. To be clear, a recruiter can be a valuable job-search partner. You can- not saunter into a staffing firm in a pair of jeans and sneakers and expect to land a fabulous job. However, tak- ing the time to build a professional relationship with the right recruiter (or two) can lead you to opportuni- ties you would not have been able to uncover on your own.
