A-GAME CATCH AS CATCH CAN Europe=s racing on Sunday spans from The Curragh to Dusseldorf, with Deauville in between offering a key 2-year-old contest in the G2 Darley Prix Robert Papin. Staged over the unique distance of 5 1/2 furlongs, it has attracted Shaikh Duaij Al Khalifa=s G2 Norfolk S. winner A=Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) who bids to inflict another in a string of defeats on the French- trained contingent. Going from a defeat on debut at Ripon June 5 to a neck verdict over Saturday=s Weatherbys Super Sprint disappointment Ventura Rebel (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) in the June 20 Royal Ascot speed test, the Simon Crisford trainee bids to become the sixth British-trained winner since 2012. The exception is the filly Jolie (Fr) (Power {GB}), who in another stride would have beaten the Norfolk abstainer Maven (American Pharoah) in the G3 Prix du Bois at Chantilly June 29. and Franki Dettori stay firm all the way to the line in the At The Curragh, the G2 Friarstown Stud Sapphire S. features | Racing Post some usual suspects among the sprinting scene and the 3-year- old Soldier=s Call (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Quickly establishing dominion on =s >TDN Rising Star= on a Curragh track that is increasingly becoming a haven for front-runners, the homebred became the fourth consecutive Classic winner on this circuit to make all in 2019. As in the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot June 20, it was again Ballydoyle=s Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) who put the frighteners on in the closing stages with all else readily beaten but ultimately it was the same one-two with a half-length the margin this time. The 5-2 favourite Pink Dogwood (Ire) ( {GB}) was 4 1/2 lengths away in third, unable to live with the pair of highly progressive contemporaries ahead of her. AShe=s a filly who has done nothing but improve, the vibes at home were good and John is a great trainer and he had a good feeling about her so we knew we had her good enough to do herself justice,@ Dettori said of the 7-2 second favourite who had been supplemented for i40,000 at the confirmation stage. G2 Paddy Power Minstrel S. Cont.

Seventh in the G1 St James=s Palace S. at Royal Ascot in June, fifth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August and ninth in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. back at Ascot in October, he returned from winter quarters with a highly encouraging effort to be fifth after a troubled trip in the G3 Gladness S. over this trip at Naas Apr. 13 before running fourth in the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury May 18. In the Queen Anne, he was affected by the refusal to race by his next-door neighbour Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}) and although he lost lengths at the start and met interference two out he was under two lengths away in fourth at the finish. This performance in a rapid time confirms him as a top-drawer performer granted his ideal conditions of fast ground and a strong pace to run at and connections were looking ahead with understandable positivity. AHe=s been in good shape this year and has gone very professional, more relaxed and easier to deal with,@ trainer Ken Condon said. AI thought it was a lovely performance.@

Romanised | Racing Post

While Romanised is now established over seven furlongs, Condon is thinking of an immediate return to a mile. AHe=ll come out of the race well and he=ll go the [G1 Prix] Jacques le Marois [at Deauville Aug. 11] next,@ he said. AThere was just a big gap between Ascot and the Marois, the guts of eight weeks, and I just thought he=d need something to keep him at a level. What helped was that Billy said they went a good pace. I thought he quickened well there and switched leads like a nice horse. Billy was very good on him. Last year I was looking at the Prix de la Foret, but thought maybe the round track at Longchamp would be too sharp for him. I don=t know now, as that opens up options.@ Cont. p6 TDN EUROPE • PAGE 6 OF 15 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 21 JULY 2019

TURBO KICKS IN FOR ANGLESEY SUCCESS There was a thriller for The Curragh=s G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables Anglesey S. on Saturday, with all seven protagonists in with a shot in the closing stages before Roman Turbo (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) that bit extra that makes the difference at this level. Having taken a well-contested maiden over six furlongs on debut here when sent off at 25-1 on weekend June 28, Sammy Hon Kit Ma=s bay was afforded greater respect at only 6-1 in this tight affair in which Ballydoyle=s >TDN Rising Star= Pistoletto (War Front) was making his comeback after a break. Settled third early by Ronan Whelan, he had a suitably strong pace to run at courtesy of Rosegreen=s second-string Mount Fuji (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Although he was fifth a furlong from home with the field all in contention, it was his stamina which played out over the additional 63 yards of this test and at the line he held a 3/4-of-a- length advantage over Lil Grey (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Soul Search (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was a head away in third, while the 9-4 favourite Pistoletto was beaten only a total of 2 3/4 lengths in sixth. AWe always liked him at home and although he obliged first time, we thought like all of Mick [Halford]=s he=d improve for the run,@ jockey Ronan Whelan said. AHe travelled through the race nicely and was a little bit green, so ideally I=d have liked a lead for a bit longer. He=s only going to do enough when he gets He=s coming forward well. Having already produced the triple listed-winning and G2 Union-Rennen third Swacadelic (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), it is a surprise that Roman Turbo is able to show such speed and precocity and in all likelihood underlines what a class act he is to win over these distances as a midsummer juvenile. MAXIMUM SECURITY SEVERE HEAT, CONVERSATIONS WITH THE GOVERNOR, A LONG DELAY, BUT THE SHOW PREVAILS ON HOT AND WENT ON AT MONMOUTH by Bill Finley HECTIC HASKELL DAY OCEANPORT, NJ--At the end of the day, which came a lot later than anyone had planned on, the story Saturday at Monmouth Park was a lot more than Maximum Security (New Year's Day) winning the GI Haskell Invitational. In fact, the Haskell almost seemed like an afterthought to what was undoubtedly among the stranger days in the history of the sport. With a massive heat wave blasting the eastern portion of the country, several tracks decided to cancel. But for Monmouth, with its signature race as part of the card and NBC in town to televise the Haskell, this was no ordinary day at the races. Dennis Drazin, who heads the management team that runs the track, decided to hold the card. Cont. p5

After holding the afternoon’s first two contests following a delay, the announcement was made that all non-stakes events would be cancelled and that the carded stakes races would be held later in the evening. The gate for the day’s feature sprung some 2 1/2 hours after its originally scheduled post time and Maximum Security, the 4-5 chalk perhaps best known for being disqualified from first to 17th in the GI May 4, broke well and took up a stalking spot three deep. I've ridden on hotter days than today. Yes, definitely, they made the right decision to race today. None of my horses had any problems. Nothing happened to them." So the card went on, but there were some bumps in the road. Plenty of them, in fact. The first race was delayed by 38 minutes. During that time Drazin was on the phone first with someone who was in direct contact with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and then with Murphy himself. Marylou Whitney celebrating Birdstone's 2004 GI Travers S. win Coglianese Photo

All these moving tributes to Marylou Whitney leave no doubt that she touched many, many lives. And it had been the most natural thing in the world one day to find her presiding over the placement of headstones for the previously unmarked graves of champion Silver Spoon and her dam Silver Fog, in the cemetery that contains so many names synonymous with the Whitneys. It will be easily understood, then, how unforgettable a privilege it was to be seated beside Marylou when Summer Bird- -by her 2004 [Belmont] winner Birdstone--won the Belmont. I was able to tell her to close her eyes and reflect that neither Sonny, nor Harry Payne Whitney, had ever achieved what she had just done. And when that grand old lady opened those eyes, they were full of tears. Given her love of the farm, there had never been any doubt that Birdstone would stand at Gainesway. But the affinity between our families extended far beyond horses. My children adored her. She was so kind to my mother especially, after we lost my father.
