6 - A Novel Final in the West by J.J. Kennedy

iven the limitations of divisional hurling. novelty (an be rare. Yet that's precisc!y what G today's Tipperary Co-op $uperValu West senior hurling final at Sean Treacy Park has to offer. It's a dash of the familiar and the new. Kickhams are in their fifth consecutive final (their 6th in seven years). facing new boys on the block. Galtce Rvs. Only once in the past. 1942. has Galtee Rvs. contested a senior hurling final and they've never won the tide. By contrast Kickhams seck their 17th divisional crown, ranking second only to Cashel K.C. in the roll of honour.

The uniqueness of the pairing results from the emergence of Galtec Rvs.:ls a hurling force In latter years. Football has always been the traditional passion in Bansha but the present generation has adopted the hurling code with equal proficiency. The development of this team can be traced to 1997 when they won a rare enough West junior title and only lost the county final narrowly to . 1-4 to 1·3. Two yea~ later they were back as West champions and this time went all the way in the county championship, beating Skeheenannka by I ·10 to 0·8 In the decider.

The next phase of their development was at Intennediate level where they took two West titles. 2000 and 200 I. adding the county crown in the latter year.Their VIctims on c.hat occasion were Moyne\Templetuohy. the final score reading 1·8 to 0·10.

In senior ranks then they drew Immediate attention In the Wen With a first round defeat of last year. The final score there was 2·14 to 1·11. a result that served Immedllte notice that c.his Galtees' side was a force to be reckoned With. In the seml·final they were desperately unlucky to lose to Kickhams by 2·1] to 1·12. As that game went Into 'lost' time Rovers actually led by four pOintS but In the extra minutes they sometlOw conceded 1·5 to lose sensationally In a game that they seemed to have wrapped up.

In last year's county ChampIOnship Galtees gave lurther nOtice of their arflval as a senior hurling force when defeating . 2·14 to 2·12. before gOing under eventually to by ]·6 to 2-7. ThiS year they had a dlsappOlntUlg Start to the championship when lOSing to Cashel but rumours of their demise proved premature when they topped In the losers section and then reversed the first round result with Cashel In the seml·final.

By contrast Klckhams arc old hands at thiS st.lge 01 the West championship. Alter 37 years of famine the club finally took West titles In 1997 and 1999 and sillce thell they've been the moSt conSistent club in the West playing 111 five of the last six West finals. Worryingly. though. they lost the last three deciders. [Wice to Cappawtllte and last year to Clonoulty. The fear of lOSing four-III-a-row must be a huge incentive as they prepare for Sunday's clash with Rovers.

KlCkhams visa to the final was earned through last Sunday·s WUl over Cappawhlte. HavlIlg lost lWO fillais to the s~mc OppOSition the value of the Will should nOt be under estimated. CappaWhlle had become their bogey teJm and on Sunday they shed lIlat fear With an Impresslvt' dlspl~y - br more unpreSSlve than the end marglll 01 two POliltS would Ind'Glte.

TIllS year Kickh.1llls have lost Damlen McGrath and RIChard Horgan. both emigrated to All1eflca. but the return of fergal Heney after Injury to full back has been a boost. He lines up once again In front of go,llre fergal Horgan. renewing a partnership that began With Tipperary's 7 last All Ireland minor success in 1996. John McCormack had an impressive outing for the dub last Sunday at centre back, releasing county panelist Brian Horgan for his best pOSition at wing back. The stylish Alan Horgan, Brian's brother. was midfield the last day while former defender, Kevin Farrell, switched to the unfamiliar surroundings of full forward. It was an unsuccessful move against the powerful Shane McDermott but few forwards would have shone on the Cappawhlte man on Sunday Kickhams also Introduced twO new young players in Paul O'Dwyer and Peter Comerford; Michael Heelan would have been there but for injury. like the Kickham team. Galtee Rvs. are strong defensively. After their first round defeat by Cashel they moved Seamus Moloney to full back and he has settled in impressively to steady that line. County panelist, Colin Morrissey. is the anchor on a strong half back line. where Andrew Morrissey and Willie Tarrant operate on the wings. They are also very Strong at mid field with the return of Chris Byron to partner Pol Morrissey. The attack looks less formidable where county minor, David Morrissey. can pose most threat.

With twO hurling\football doubles at minor and U2 I levels already secured, Rovers on Sunday chase an unprecedented third double. And on past form they have very realistic chances of achieving it. Kickhams will perhaps be very slight favourites after their form against Cappawhite but it will be no sur.prise if Rovers make history.

ounded in 1885. Before the foundation of the West Division was Faffiliated in the South. A team representing won a South Junior Hurling title. In the late forties and early fifties Galtee Rovers emerged as a football stronghold in the West wining six senior championships in a row. They also enjoyed some county success. Throughout the sixties and seventies they continued to be one of the football powers of the West and in the mid seventies produced the Divions' most successful team which won County Senior Football titles in '76, '79 and '8 1. They were also runner up three times in '77, '78 and 'SO,The football tradition continues to this day and last Sunday they won the senior football championship for the fifth year in a row. The hurling history is a little less glamorous. When Eire/Og won the county senior championship in 1943 they beat Galtee/Rovers convincingly in the first round and except for a few times in amalgamations Galtees didn't play senior hurling as a single dub again until 2002. Hurling was kept alive with the dub winning a West Junior title in every decade. The 1997 West junior title however was followed up with another one and county honours in 1999. In two years In the intermediate grade they won the two West titles and added the county in 200 I. For the past twenty years a serious effort have been made to improve hurling standards in the dub. After some success in the "8" grades they finally won their first ever "A" title at under twelve in 1995. since then they have won the "A" championship in every grade: U/12 '95 and '97. U!l4 '99. U1 16 '99, '0 I. Minor '01, '03. Under21 back to back titles in '02 and '03. Last year they played senior hurling as a single club for th~ first time in fifty nine years. They were beaten in the West semi.flnal but went on to reach the last twelve in the county. This year they have already reached the last twelve in the county and today they are both playing in and vying for their first ever West senior hurling title.
