The Montgomery File Quoting Shane Montgomery Born ...... March 14, 1967 (ABOUT THE COLORADO GAME): We were very disappointed with Saturday’s game. We felt like we were ready going into the ball game. We knew it would be a tough match-up against a Age ...... 40 very fast improving team. I think they’ve improved a lot since last year. They had played three Hometown ...... Newark, Ohio quality opponents prior to our game, so we knew they were a much improved football team. Alma Mater ...... North Carolina State ‘90 Defensively, we felt like they were one of the best teams in the Big 12 last year and had played pretty well throughout this year, especially against Florida State the week before. We knew we COACHING EXPERIENCE would have to try to control the line of scrimmage some if we were going to have a chance to be successful. We did not do that. We didn’t get much going in the running game. We tried to Miami University throw the ball, especially in the fi rst half. There were a combination of things—not having much March 2001-Present time to throw the ball and not doing a good job of getting open and hitting our receivers— • Head Coach (December 2004-present) that we just did not throw the ball well at all in the fi rst half, and that really put us in a lot of • Offensive Coordinator and Coach third and long situations that we could not overcome. It’s obviously disappointing when you are shut out. I felt like we would play much better than that. (2001-04) Defensively for us, even though they had struggled to run the football the fi rst three games, we felt like the would line up and try to run the ball against us to see how they would Tennessee-Chattanooga do and match up against us since we are not real big up front. They had a lot of success there. February 1993-March 2001 I thought our defense, even though we gave up a lot of yards and we ended up giving up 42 • Wide Receivers Coach (1997-2000), points, at times we did some good things. In the fi rst half especially, we probably had a chance to intercept three or four balls and just tipped balls that we didn’t get that might have turned Quarterbacks Coach (1993-1996), Recruiting that game around. The big key for us defensively was that we gave up too many third and longs Coordinator (1995-2000), Co-Offensive in the fi rst half where we actually got them behind the chains and had a chance to make a Coordinator (1995-96). play and just didn’t do it. The key was they were converting their third and longs and third and mediums and we weren’t converting any, and the next thing you know we’re down 28-0. I like North Carolina State the way we battled in the second half. We moved the ball a little bit better on offense but never came up with a big play to give us any momentum on offense. August 1991-February 1992 You have to give credit to Colorado, but our defense hung in there. We played a lot of young • Graduate Assistant Coach guys in the fourth quarter. Probably half of that group in there at the end was playing for the fi rst time at certain positions just to give our starters some rest. There were a few positives. PLAYING EXPERIENCE We didn’t have any turnovers. We didn’t give up many sacks. At times, Daniel did a good job of Raleigh Durham Skyhawks ...... 1990 throwing the ball away because we didn’t have much time at certain times. There weren’t many • Quarterback during inaugural season of World positives to come out of that game Saturday, and right now we have to try to get our confi - dence back as we go into the Syracuse game. League of American Football (ABOUT PUNTER JAKE RICHARDSON’S PERFORMANCE AT COLORADO): I thought Jake had North Carolina State ...... 1985-1989 a tremendous game and I think he needed to. He had probably one of his worst games in the • Three-year letterwinner at QB last three years against Cincinnati and really struggled. He came back and had six punts over 50 • Second-team all-ACC in 1989 yards at Colorado, and he really did a good job of helping us with fi eld position in the fi rst half and giving us a chance. You never know how we are going to punt in that type of environment, • Offensive MVP of the ‘88 Peach Bowl and ‘89 and he did a great job and gave us a chance. They did get some returns on us, and it almost Copper Bowl looked like he out-kicked our coverage a few times because he did hit six punts over 50 yards, and one was over 60. He did a tremendous job and will continue to improve throughout the year.

(ABOUT THE MIAMI QUARTERBACKS LAST SATURDAY): We decided to start Daniel Rauda- baugh and he was going to start regardless of Mike Kokal’s injury situation. Mike had hurt his thumb the week before, and I felt like unless we needed him I was probably not going to put him in that ball game. I wanted to make sure he got a week of rest.

(ABOUT SYRACUSE): Syracuse had a huge win on Saturday. They had struggled in their fi rst three games. They have played four quality opponents to start the season, losing to Washington and home and Iowa on the road and then to Illinois at home and going into Louisville Saturday and having a huge win. They got their offense on track, putting up a lot of yardage, especially in the passing game. Robinson threw for a bunch of yards on Saturday against a quality opponent in Louisville and seemed to fi nd his rhythm. Defensively, they have given up a decent number of yards. Louisville threw for 555 against them on Saturday, so that ends up elevating that statis- tic a little bit. They will be a physical team. Last year we went into that game a little bit under- manned. We had two of our starting offensive linemen out and had some other people out. It’s key for us to try to fi nd some confi dence this week, because we are going to go against a team that found their conference last week with that big win over Louisville.

(ABOUT MIAMI’S STRUGGLES AT HOME): We have struggled at home in the last year and a half. We’ve played some quality opponents at home. We lost a lot of close games last year, but played very poorly in the fi rst home game this year against Cincinnati. It’s imperative before we get back in the league that we get our confi dence back, and one of the things we need to so is to play better at home. I wish we had the answer to why we haven’t played better at home. It’s probably been a combination of how we’ve played and how our opponent has played. This is a very, very important game for us coming off two very disappointing losses and two games we’ve been blown out in and we’ve got to get our confi dence back.
