9 FC Bayern München - Real Madrid CF Wednesday 25 April 2018 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich Match background

The most common fixture in European football, FC Bayern München take on Real Madrid CF for the 25th time – and the seventh in a European Cup semi-final.

• The teams met in last season's quarter-finals and it was Madrid, en route to becoming the first club to retain the trophy in the UEFA Champions League era and claiming a 12th European title overall, who came out on top. Zinédine Zidane's side won 2-1 in Munich and then 4-2 in Madrid after extra time to progress to the last four.

• This is Madrid's record eighth successive UEFA Champions League semi-final, while Bayern are in the last four for the sixth time in seven seasons. Previous meetings • This is the clubs' fourth two-legged tie in seven seasons, Madrid winning two of those to Bayern's one. Overall, the teams have played in 11 previous knockout contests – all in the European Cup – Madrid winning six and Bayern five; the German club lead 4-2 in semi-final ties. • Madrid have won their last five matches against Bayern, scoring 13 goals and conceding four. • Cristiano Ronaldo has seven goals in his last three appearances against Bayern – and nine in six matches overall. • In last season's quarter-finals, Bayern – then coached by Carlo Ancelotti, who had led Madrid to the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League – struck first in the home first leg through Arturo Vidal (25), who then missed a golden opportunity to double the advantage when he failed to convert a penalty in added time at the end of the first half. Ronaldo levelled two minutes into the second period and, after Bayern's Javi Martínez had been sent off for a second bookable offence (61), secured victory with his second of the night 13 minutes from time. • The teams at the Fußball Arena München on 12 April 2017 were: Bayern: Neuer, Lahm, Javi Martínez, Boateng, Alaba, Thiago, Xabi Alonso (Bernat 64), Ribéry (Douglas Costa 66), Robben, Vidal, Müller (Coman 81). Madrid: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Nacho, Marcelo, Casemiro, Modrić (Kovačić 90+1), Kroos, Bale (Asensio 59), Benzema (James Rodríguez 83), Ronaldo. • At the Santiago Bernabéu, Robert Lewandowski's penalty put Bayern in front (53) and, though Ronaldo restored Madrid's aggregate lead in the 76th minute, two minutes later a Sergio Ramos own goal sent the tie into extra time. Bayern played that extra period with ten men after Vidal's 84th-minute dismissal, and were made to pay as Ronaldo scored twice more to complete his hat-trick, Marco Asensio completing a 6-3 aggregate victory for Zidane's side. • Madrid – then coached by Ancelotti – were 5-0 aggregate victors in the 2013/14 semi-finals, en route to lifting the trophy for a tenth time. Karim Benzema (19) got the only goal of the first leg in Spain against Josep Guardiola's Bayern, before Ramos (16, 20) and Ronaldo (34, 90) scored twice apiece in Munich to inflict what remains Bayern's heaviest European home defeat. • The line-ups at the Fußball Arena München on 29 April 2014 were: Bayern: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba, Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Müller (Pizarro 72), Ribéry (Götze 72), Mandžukić (Javi Martínez 46). Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Ramos (Varane 75), Pepe, Coentrão, Alonso, Modrić, Di María (Casemiro 84), Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema (Isco 80). • Bayern, then as now coached by Jupp Heynckes, had come out on top when the sides met in the 2011/12 semi- finals, each recording a 2-1 home victory. Goals from Franck Ribéry (17) and Mario Gomez (90) gave Bayern the edge in Munich, despite Mesut Özil's reply (53) for Madrid. • The teams for the first leg in Munich on 17 April 2012 were: Bayern: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Badstuber, Alaba, Luiz Gustavo, Kroos, Schweinsteiger (Müller 61), Robben, Ribéry, Gomez. Madrid: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe, Coentrão, Khedira, Alonso, Di María (Granero 79), Özil (Marcelo 69), Benzema (Higuaín 84), Ronaldo. • Back in Spain, Ronaldo scored twice early on (6pen, 14), only for Arjen Robben to respond from the penalty spot for Bayern (27). With no further goals, extra time and penalties followed, Bayern prevailing 3-1 with David Alaba, Gomez and Bastian Schweinsteiger converting for Heynckes' men; only Xabi Alonso – who later moved to Bayern – was successful for José Mourinho's Madrid. Ronaldo, Kaká and Ramos all missed for Madrid; Toni Kroos, now at Madrid, and Philipp Lahm were the Bayern failures. • Bayern also got the better of Madrid in the 2006/07 round of 16, winning on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw. Madrid won 3-2 in Spain, Raúl González scoring twice, but went out after losing 2-1 in Munich, a match in which

Bayern's Roy Makaay scored the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history. • Current Madrid coach Zinédine Zidane notched the decisive goal against Bayern in the 2003/04 round of 16, in a 1-0 second-leg win in Madrid; the first game in Munich finished 1-1. • The clubs met in three successive UEFA Champions League campaigns between 2000 and 2002, with the winners going on to lift the trophy on each occasion. Madrid held sway in the 1999/2000 semi-finals (2-0 h, 1-2 a) and the 2001/02 quarter-finals (1-2 a, 2-0 h), Zidane playing both legs of the latter tie; Bayern were victorious in the 2000/01 semi-finals (1-0 a, 2-1 h). Bayern were superior to Madrid in the 1999/2000 second group stage, winning 4-2 in Madrid and 4-1 in Munich. • The German side were also victorious in the teams' first two ties, in the 1975/76 semi-finals (1-1 a, 2-0 h) – when they proceeded to lift the trophy for a third year running – and at the same stage in 1986/87 (4-1 h, 0-1 a). Madrid, however, were victorious in the 1987/88 quarter-finals, 4-3 over two legs (2-3 a, 2-0 h). • Overall there is little between the teams in their 24 previous meetings. Each has won 11 matches, with two draws; Bayern have scored 36 goals, Madrid 37. • The duo have tended to hold the edge in their own stadium. Those draws include the 2016 final against Atlético Madrid, which Madrid won on penalties in Milan. • This season, Madrid's first away game in Group H was a 3-1 success at Dortmund on matchday two, but they lost by the same scoreline at Tottenham before a 6-0 victory at APOEL – their biggest UEFA Champions League away win. They beat Paris Saint-Germain 5-2 on aggregate in the round of 16 (3-1 home, 2-1 away). • Zidane's team have lost two of their last six European away games. The 2-1 defeat at Atlético in last season's semi- final second leg (4-2 aggregate) ended Madrid's six-game unbeaten away run in the UEFA Champions League (W3 D3). They have now lost three of their last 17 away matches, the other a 2-0 reverse at Wolfsburg in the 2015/16 quarter-final first leg; they won ten of those games. • This season Ronaldo became the first player to score in all six group games, registering nine goals overall. He also struck in each leg of both the last 16 and the quarter-final, meaning he has continued his record of finding the net in every game this season and is the competition's top scorer with 15 goals. The only player to have bettered that total is Ronaldo himself, with 17 goals in 2013/14 and 16 in 2015/16. • The holders have already won in Germany this season, beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 on matchday two; the Spanish side won the return fixture 3-2 in December. • Overall, their record in Germany is W6 D7 L19 – five of those wins coming in their last eight visits.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 42 times, including AS Roma in both this season's round of 16 and quarter-finals. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. • The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previous record held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home; Roma equalled that margin in this season's quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona with a 3-0 home success. • Thirty ties have been decided on away goals, including 11 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five round of 16 encounters, five quarter-finals including Real Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final. • Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. • The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16 semi-finals. • Liverpool FC (versus FC Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş JK) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at FC Schalke 04 in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16. Bayern eventually beat Sporting 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match having beaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg. • The biggest winning margin in a semi-final game is Bayern's 4-0 defeat of Barcelona in the 2012/13 first leg and Madrid's 4-0 win at Bayern in the second leg a year later. AFC Ajax beat Bayern 5-2 in 1994/95, while there were 4-1 wins for Juventus (1996/97 and 1997/98), Valencia CF (1999/2000) and Manchester United (2010/11). Eight teams have won 3-0, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Atlético Madrid in 2016/17. • Bayern's 7-0 defeat of Barcelona in 2012/13 is the biggest aggregate win in a UEFA Champions League semi-final. Juventus's 4-1 win against Monaco in 1997/98 was part of the biggest aggregate semi-final score. The principality club won 3-2 in their home return to make it ten goals in the tie. • Madrid's 6-0 second-leg win against FC Zürich in 1963/64 is the biggest European Cup semi-final victory. Eintracht Frankfurt's 12-4 success against Rangers FC in 1959/60 is the biggest aggregate total. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan 2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti (Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated. • In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat. • In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München. UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

29 FC Bayern München - Real Madrid CF Wednesday 25 April 2018 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16. • Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing his own mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in 2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight. • Messi's hat-trick against Manchester City FC on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in the competition, a record Ronaldo matched against Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2016/17 semi-finals. • SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete at this level, having been aged 43 years and 252 days when he figured against Madrid on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition. • Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in AS Roma's 1-1 draw at PFC CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years and 290 days) was the previous record holder. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared – he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored, aged 17 years and 195 days, in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 reverse at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.
