Used under authorization. welcome Greetings Mando Mercs members, friends, and fans, It seems like yesterday we were putting the finishing touches to issue #1, and now we’re releasing issue #2. We’ve had many developments in the Mercs and Star Wars since last issue; Episode VII director announce- ment, ‘3D Episodes on hold’ announcement, Membership Tiers, Verd’ika Corps kids club, Celebration Europe...the list could go on. 6 years ago this March, a small website and forum was launched to bring existing Mandalorian costumers into an organized and represent- ed group among the Star Wars community. From that small handful of people, Mandalorian Mercs has become home to thousands of mem- bers and fans around the world. My goal is to ensure that your Mercs family is here for your benefit, and that our home is a fixture in the Star Wars Universe. Some featured Princess Leia as Rosie the Riveter, the emblem of the Resistance fighters tattooed on her arm or taking the place of Rosie’s employment badge on her collar. Signs recreated the Star Wars’ ITC Serif Gothic Heavy font to proclaim that “The Women Strike Back,” “The Fempire Strikes Back,” “The Estrogen Empire Strikes Back,” and “The Female Force Awakens,” others presented the Resistance insignia and/or Princess Leia’s face stating “Resistance is Built on Hope.” Some protestors dressed in a full Princess Leia costumes from A New Hope, promising to defeat the Dark Side. Some marchers paraphrased Leia’s iconic plea to Obi Wan, and declared, “We are Our Only Hope.” A sign paraphrasing Yoda argued that “Fear leads to anger.

ABSTRACT Star Wars has influenced generations of American viewers for decades but has gone largely unanalyzed when it comes to a critique of the discourses about masculinity presented in the films. This is problematic as media serves as an agent of socialization, and the representations of masculinity in the Star Wars franchise may influence viewers’ idealization of masculinity leading to real world consequences. The research questions being analyzed in this study are: Is hegemonic masculinity performed by central characters in Star Wars? If so, how is it reinforced, how is it challenged, and how do these change over time? This study uses a critical discourse analysis to analyze the character development of twenty central characters of the Star Wars franchise, how these characters are both challenged and aspire to fall into ideals of hegemonic masculinity, and how these ideals may shift over time.
