(English version) Question for written answer E-003192/20 to the Commission Pina Picierno (S&D), Irene Tinagli (S&D), Patrizia Toia (S&D), Massimiliano Smeriglio (S&D), Elisabetta Gualmini (S&D), Pierfrancesco Majorino (S&D), Giuliano Pisapia (S&D), Paolo De Castro (S&D), Alessandra Moretti (S&D) (26 May 2020) Subject: Facebook shuts down profile of journalist Mariano Giustino Mariano Giustino is a freelance Italian journalist who, since 2004, has covered Turkey's domestic and foreign policy (he has lived there since 2010), its relations with Europe and the geopolitical importance of Turkey’s Kurdish minority. On 16 April 2020, Facebook — without warning or justification — shut down the journalist’s personal profile after he posted a story about members of the terrorist organisation ‘Grey Wolves’ being released from prison as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shutting down his profile means archiving an informed first-hand account of recent events in Turkey. The act deprives Europe of knowledge from a source who often reports on historical events before the national and international media. The shutdown also suggests a tangible threat to his personal and professional safety, since, in Turkey, such acts are often performed under pressure from the authorities and are a harbinger of harsher repression to come. Can the Commission clarify: 1. whether it is aware of these facts; 2. what measures it intends to take to address the growing media censorship in Turkey; and 3. what measures it intends to take to address the influence of authoritarian regimes on social networks? Answer given by Mr Várhelyi on behalf of the European Commission (4 August 2020) The Commission is aware of the situation mentioned by the Honourable Members.

The European Elections of May 2019 Electoral systems and outcomes STUDY EPRS | European Parliamentary Research Service Kai Friederike Oelbermann and Friedrich Pukelsheim PE 652.037 – July 2020 EN The European Elections of May 2019 Electoral systems and outcomes This EPRS study provides an overview of the electoral systems and outcomes in the May 2019 elections to the European Parliament. It analyses the procedural details of how parties and candidates register their participation, how votes are cast, how valid votes are converted into seats, and how seats are assigned to candidates. For each Member State the paper describes the ballot structure and vote pattern used, the apportionment of seats among the Member State’s domestic parties, and the assignment of the seats of a party to its candidates. It highlights aspects that are common to all Member States and captures peculiarities that are specific to some domestic provisions. EPRS | European Parliamentary Research Service AUTHOR(S) This study has been written by Kai-Friederike Oelbermann (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences) and Friedrich Pukelsheim (University of Augsburg) at the request of the Members’ Research Service, within the Directorate-General for Parliamentary Research Services (EPRS) of the Secretariat of the European Parliament. The authors acknowledge the useful comments made by Wilhelm Lehmann (European Parliament/European University Institute) on drafts of this paper. • Brussels, 23 April 2021 Open Letter Concerning European Commitment
Brussels, 23 April 2021 Open letter concerning European commitment to end homelessness at the Porto Social Summit Dear President of the European Council Michel, Dear Prime Minister Costa, Dear Members of the European Council, Dear Members of the Employment and Social Affairs Council, In its Communication on the Action Plan on the European Pillar of Social Rights, the European Commission rightly states that the number of homeless people has risen sharply and is currently unacceptably high. The European Commission also refers to the fact that the European Parliament and stakeholders want the EU to set an objective to end homelessness by 2030, which was most recently called for in the report on ‘Access to Decent and Affordable Housing’. As Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Ana Mendes Godinho, Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security in Portugal, and Yves Leterme, Goodwill Ambassador for the Fight against Homelessness in Europe, jointly stated in June 20201: “Though complex, homelessness is not insurmountable and can be overcome. Ending homelessness requires resolute action addressing its root causes, and investing in prevention and empowerment strategies. The European Union also has an important role to play: it can rally all interested stakeholders around a shared goal, galvanise the political commitment of Member States, facilitate exchange of best practice and support the scale-up of evidence-based policies via the EU budget.” While we welcome the proposal for an EU Platform on Combatting Homelessness and the High Level Conference on it as important steps for putting homelessness on the European agenda and supporting Member States’ actions, we regret that the European Commission did not include a shared European goal to reduce and ultimately end homelessness as a sub-target of the poverty reduction target in the action plan.
