Glendale “We Help People” Fire & Rescue News January/February 2010

FROM THE FIRE CHIEF Mitigation – Prevention – Education Mud and debris flows continue to be a major concern as this winter season delivers much needed rain to the region. We entered 2010 with heavy weather systems coming through our area on a regular basis. One of the first storm systems initiated the evacua- tion of 360 homes in our recent burn areas. The Emergency Opera- tions Center was activated to coordinate the local resources to deal with the many issues that occurred. We have been very fortunate up to this point that the city of Glendale has not had any significant damage. There continues to be a major effort to keep the community informed on the current weather conditions and the very real threat of mud and debris flows. We witnessed how devastating this could be when the mud and debris flowed down Ocean View Blvd. earlier this month. We must continue to stay engaged with each and every risk we face; this effort may prevent the loss of life! On January 27, we implemented a significant change to our emergency medical system. Due to clearly defined budgetary limitations, we needed to reduce one of our five Rescue Ambulances (six FF/PM positions) and add a Basic Life Support ambulance (non-sworn hourly employees). This change is clearly a different way to provide EMS service to the community, but it can help to meet the need for an additional emergency resource. Our new Ambulance Operators have the ground running with this new program and will be successful with your mentoring and guidance. Many personnel have helped to make this a success up to this point. I thank those who volunteered to in outfitting the vehicles, teaching in the AO academy, and all the other areas needed to start up the program. Special thanks also go out to Battalion Chief Greg Godfrey (EMS) and FF/PM Steve Keys (GFFA), who put in many hours creating the initial blueprint of the program we have today. Verdugo Dispatch has entered a new era by adding a tiered dispatching component to its protocols. We have taken a conservative approach to the number of incident types that have been included in the BLS program. The responses will be reviewed periodically and modified as needed by Verdugo’s new Medical Director, Dr. Ed Noll. By design, this program will evolve gradually to allow us to carefully observe the effects of each change and resolve any issues that might arise. Congratulations to those members of the department who recently reached the milestone of serving the citizens of Glendale for 30 years: Ed Ackerman, Corey Creasey, Ron Gulli, and Mario Vasquez. Thanks for all you have done to ensure the safety of the community you serve and the success of those you work with! Congratulations also to our newly promoted Fire Captains, Richard Bush and Cordell Harges, and Fire Engineer Jason Bess. We wish you well in your new positions of leadership. Once again we face predictions of major storms this weekend. Let’s strive to remain on alert and emphasize preparedness and safety at all times. Harold D. Scoggins, Fire Chief “People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.” – Eleanor Roosevelt Our Mission: To prevent or reduce the loss of life and the destruction of property and the environment from fire, medical, hazardous materials and other emergency occurrences. 2 Glendale Fire & Rescue News
