SERVING CLOVIS, PORTALES AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES EasternNewMexicoNews.com A WALK IN THE PARK Ranger rescued ❏ Portales family has no idea how their dog ended up 100 miles from home. By Kurt Munz-Raper STAFF WRITER [email protected] PORTALES — Laura Adkins is calling it a Christmas miracle. Last Wednesday, Laura and Steve Adkins of Portales were reunited with their dog Ranger after Ranger had been missing for seven months. The dog was found in Roswell, about 100 miles from the Adkins’ home. “It is nice to get the dog back,” Steve Adkins said. “We’re in good shape.” The 1-year-old Australian Shepherd, who is partially deaf, disappeared from the Adkins’ home on May 25 after Steve Adkins left to get a haircut on a hot day. “I never left him at home. I left him here that morning. When I got back the gate was open and he was gone,” he said. “Everybody’s 99 per- cent sure somebody had taken him.” Laura Adkins agreed Ranger was stolen. “We can make a lot of speculation, but when my husband came (back home), things that were in the yard were missing,” Laura Adkins said. Steve Adkins said he and his family spent three or four eight-hour days looking for Ranger, and “we never gave up.” Rumors about what may have happened grew Area welcomes first baby of 2017 every day the dog was gone. Committees to be reconfigured ALBUQUERQUE — Incoming Democratic lead- ers in the New Mexico House plan to reconfigure the chamber’s committee structure by creating new committees and eliminating others. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the Democratic leaders plan to make com- mittee changes just as Republicans did two years ago. Democrats reclaimed con- trol of the House in November. One change would involve creating a House Labor and Economic Development Committee. Democrats had objected two years ago to a GOP push to abolish a labor committee and replace it with the House Business and Employment Committee. Fossil could be ancient reptile DEL RIO, Texas — A fossil found in limestone along a remote South Texas riverbed could be that of a dolphin-like reptile that swam in oceans 90 million years ago, according to paleontologists. The discovery was made two years ago by petroleum geologist James Harcourt, who works for the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates the state’s oil and gas industry. It went largely unnoticed until a photo of the fossil appeared on the cover of the commission’s 2016 annual report. The find is unique because it appears to be a nearly complete fossil of an ichthyosaur, which grew to about 6 feet long and had the sleek body of a dol- phin and long, toothy jaws of a dinosaur, the Houston Chronicle reports.
