The purpose of this treaty was to protect the territory and “….to open up to settlement and immigration a tract of country bounded and described hereinafter mentioned, and to obtain the consent thereto of her Indian subjects inhabiting the said tract, and to make treaty and arrangements with them, so that there be peace and good will…” and to be compensated for the land taken!

• FNT2T is engaged in a process leading to the establishment of a collective Constitution, Government and Legislature; • The collective is made up of FNT2T which will be governing with a constitution, governance and law-making institutions and who meet certain fundamental conditions such as respect for individual rights, accountability to the Anishinaabe, demonstrated acceptance by the Anishinaabek. • Local and Nation/Territory development; • First Nations have been calling for the end of the Indian Act for quite some time; (AMC/AFN Resolutions) • The Government of Canada has been listening and have stated that they agree, the Indian Act must be dissolved; • With or without it we must move forward! • What will replace the Indian Act? • The Government of Canada has no forthcoming legislation to replace the Indian Act and has taken the approach that the First Nations are in the position to design their own terms of self-governance; • Local Nations to create their own governing laws and the rules that their government will follow; • Each “Local Nation” will have its own laws to govern itself. 5 Step Process: 1. Meeting with Local Nation Chief & Council to review the process and approve through resolution for the process to move forward with the Local Nation. 2. An open house is held to provide awareness and information on the history of the work that has happened for FNT2T and the work moving forward. Anishinaabe Law Development

3. Members for a “Governance Committee” are identified by each Local Nation Chief and Council and work begins to draft the constitution. 4. The Governance Committee with the support of the FNT2T Regional Offices present the draft constitution to the membership of the Local Nation. 5. A ratification process begins – has yet to be defined in detail.
