When the rank of the holy Fathers flocked from the ends of the inhabited world, they believed in one Substance and one Nature of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, delivering plainly to the Church the mystery of discoursing in theology. Wherefore, in that we laud them in faith, we beatify them, saying: What a divine army, ye God-inspired soldiers of the camp of the Lord, ye most brilliant luminaries in the noetic firmament, ye impregnable towers of the mystical Zion, ye scented flowers of paradise, the golden mouths of the Word, the boast of Nicaea, and delight of the whole universe, intercede ceaselessly for our souls. Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Most blessed art thou, O , for through Him that was incarnate of thee is Hades despoiled, is recalled from the dead, the curse is made void, Eve is set free, death is slain, and we are endowed with life. Wherefore, in hymns of praise, we cry aloud: Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God, Who is thus well pleased, glory to Thee. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + • The Hymns of the Day during the Divine Liturgy of Saint : + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + THE FIRST ANTIPHON: Refrain: Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us. ORDINARY KONTAKION IN TONE TWO: O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant, O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned; but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + THE TRISAGION HYMN + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + • The Scripture of the day, following the Trisagion Hymn: THE (For the Holy Fathers): Clergy: Let us attend! (3:8-15) Clergy: Let us attend! Reader: Titus, my son, faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire you to affirm confidently, that those who have believed in God may be thoughtful of how to preside in honorable occupations. These things are good and profitable to men. But avoid foolish disputes, and genealogies, and contentions, and controversies about the Law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man who is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that such a one is subverted, and sins, being self- condemned. When I send to you, or Tychicós, give diligence to come to me to ; for I have determined to winter there. Set forward and on their journey diligently, that they may be lacking in nothing. And let our people also learn how to preside in honorable occupations, so as to help in cases of urgent need, that they should not be unfruitful. All who are with me salute you. Salute those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. Clergy: Peace be to thee, who readest. Reader: And to thy spirit. 18 July 2021 4 Sunday Bulletin

Choir: The Lord, the God of gods, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. All: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! THE (For the Holy Fathers): The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew. (5:14-19) The Lord said to His Disciples: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + • After “One is Holy, One is Lord…” & “I Believe O Lord and I Confess…” Sing: THE ORDINARY KOINONIKON (COMMUNION HYMN): Praise the Lord from the Heavens. The night before He was crucified, prayed, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3). Stressing the necessity of knowing Jesus, the Son of God, in order to have eternal life, the apostle John adds, “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12). Ask yourself the following questions: Do I Thirst for God? Am I Governed Increasingly by God’s Word? Am I More Loving? Am I More Sensitive to God’s Presence? Do I Have a Growing Concern for the Spiritual and Temporal Needs of Others? Do I Delight in the Bride of Jesus Christ (Church)? Are the Spiritual Disciplines Increasingly Important to me? Do I Still Grieve over Sin? Am I a Quicker Forgiver? Do I Yearn for Heaven and to Be with Jesus? growth, let’s begin by “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2), and “press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14) by reading daily and meditating on the Word of God (Jesus, His Bible & His Church) asking for Christ’s help to understand and be more like Him. May we “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and ever and to the Age of ages. Amen” (2 Peter 3:18). + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + There are three categories of the minor orders: Acolyte, Reader and Subdeacon. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + What is a Reader/αναγνώστης (anagnostis)? Proclaiming the gospel afresh to each generation remains a particular requirement of all in Christian ministry. Keeping ourselves fresh, alive and excited by the gospel is critical if we are to have a ministry which brings life and hope and joy to others. The candidate is tonsured as a sign of his submission and obedience upon entry into the clergy. The ministry of Reader requires them to be a leader in worship by chanting the divine hymns, to proclaim the Apostolic and Prophetic teachings and to be a Catechist/Teacher of the Faith. To this they bring their own unique and invaluable experiences, drawing on them in the light of biblical understanding to enrich their ministry. Their presence, witness and listening in their places of work, at home, among their neighbors and in their local communities all provide vital links between the Church and the world. As a result, Readers exercise a crucial ministry in witnessing to the unchanging love of God in a changing world. It is vital for Readers to have a balanced approach to their life and ministry so that they may, through their witness, give glory to God. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + What is a SubDeacon? The Subdeacon wears a sticharion, which is a long-sleeved tunic that reaches all the way to the ground. It reminds the wearer that the grace of the Holy Spirit covers him as with a garment of salvation and joy. In addition to this, a subdeacon will also wear an orarion/stole, representing the grace of the Holy Spirit. The orarion will be tied around his waist, up over his shoulders (forming an X-shaped cross in back), and with the ends hanging down in front, tucked under the section around the waist in an X-shaped cross. The subdeacon's liturgical role is primarily that of servant to the bishop. He assists the bishop during hierarchical liturgies. His duties include Serving in the altar, generally as the head server, Co-ordinating and leading the serving team, Training new altar servers (Acolytes), Care of the altar area, including Cleaning the altar area, Looking after the vestments of clergy, Looking after the cloths of the Holy Table, including cleaning, mending and changing them according to feasts, fasts and seasons. Subdeacons are to wear a cassock when serving; this is done as a sign of his suppression of his own will and desires, and his canonical obedience to God, his bishop and the liturgical and canonical norms of the Church. A practice unique to the Antiochian Archdiocese of North America has been for subdeacons to recite the Great and/or the two Small Ektenias at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy only. This is not normative Orthodox practice. His duties may also include those of Reader when needed. His ministry of serving in the church includes doing evangelism to grow the parish. 18 July 2021 6 Sunday Bulletin
