The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2016 The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2016 MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skep- tics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the Week of January 10-17 clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. • Babette E. Babich NIETZSCHE's IMPERATIVE AS a FRIEND's
Babette E. Babich NIETZSCHE’S IMPERATIVE AS A FRIEND’S ENCOMIUM: ON BECOMING THE ONE YOU ARE, ETHICS, AND BLESSING Es zeiget sich mit einem goldnen Tage Und die Vollkommenheit ist ohne Klage. Hölderlin: Der Herbst In Memoriam Ivan Illich (1926-2002) Among Friends: Between the Imperative and the Encomium Nietzsche’s imperative call, Werde, der Du bist - Become the one you are - is, to say the least, an odd sort of imperative: dissonant and yet intrinsically inspiring. Thus Alexander Nehamas in an essay on this very theme names it the “most haunting of Nietzsche’s haunting aphorisms.”1 Expressed as it is in The Gay Science,“Du sollst der werden, der du bist” (GS 270, KSA 3, p. 519) - Thou shalt - you ought to - you should - become the one you are -, such a command opposes the strictures of Kant’s practical imperatives, offering an assertion that seems to encourage us as what we are. As David B. Allison stresses in his book, Nietzsche’s is a voice that addresses us as a friend would: “like a friend who seems to share your every concern - and your aversions and suspicions as well. Like a true friend, he rarely tells you what you ought to do.”2 But Nietzsche here does tell us what we ought to do, if the coincident or already achieved paradox of his imperative keeps the tone of the command intimate. It is an inside piece of advice perfectly consonant with Allison’s point: Nietzsche takes us as we are. Yet taking his readers as his allies, as so many of his aphorisms seem to place us squarely on his own side, author and reader against the world - why doesn’t he simply come out and express this amiable loyalty to us, his readers, in some less ambiguous and more affirmative fashion? Be just as you are! Perfection! Ordinary, garden-variety, ethical or moral or practical imperatives urge us to alter our lives not to become what we (already) are but as ideal possibilities, contrary to immediate circumstances or fact, the idea is to become what we are not 1 Nehamas, Alexander: How One Becomes What One Is.

  • Ecce Homo” - Look at This Man! ( a Good Friday Reflection )
“Ecce Homo” - Look at This Man! ( A Good Friday Reflection ) Good Friday is the Greatest and most widely celebrated Memorial Day in history. It is the memorial day in honour of the sacrificial death of Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. It is the day on which Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Palestine handed over Lord Jesus Christ back to the Jewish Leaders, condemned to be executed by crucifixion for no valid reason except for the arrogant insistence of the Jewish leaders to crucify him, and thus shut his mouth and banish him from the face of the earth. Pilate, knowing that it was out of jealousy and his criticism of some burdensome religious observances, punished him like a minor criminal with 39 lashes by the soldiers and then brought him back to the Jewish people gathered in his Court- yard, saying “Ecce Homo” - look at this poor man, I find no fault in him deserving death by crucifixion! That was the honest judgment of Pontius Pilate. But the Jewish priests insisted: “Crucify him, crucify him. We have a law; according to which he must be crucified.” Pilate in spite of the warning from his wife, submits to pressure from Jewish Leaders and their supporters and condemns Jesus to be crucified by Roman soldiers, washing his hand against his own judgement in front of them. The soldiers, too, in their turn, to please the Jewish Priests ill-treated Jesus, mocking him as the “King of the Jews”, crowing with a crown of thorns and led him to Golgotha for execution placing his cross on his shoulders to carry along.

  • Christ, Mirror of Our Weakness
Meditation of the Prelate: 8 April Christ, Mirror of our Weakness The liturgy of Good Friday places us directly before the great mystery of Christ’s Cross. In the Gospel we contemplate our Lord in Gethsemane, being taken prisoner by a group of soldiers led by Judas. We see Him led before the High Priest Caiaphas, where He is interrogated and then struck unjustly in the face. Later, in the presence of Pilate, the people shout, “Crucify him, crucify him!” (Jn 19:6). Following that, Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns. On Good Friday morning, Pilate presents Christ, tortured and humiliated, to the people. He says, “Ecce Homo – behold the man” (Jn 19:5). A few hours later He will be crucified. In a famous painting by Titian, the Ecce Homo, we see Jesus reduced to ruin as a man, but with his divinity and beauty shining through. God has chosen to make Himself visible even in his vulnerability. In the pain and perhaps inner darkness of so many people who are suffering in the world (now also because of the coronavirus pandemic), we can contemplate Christ, scourged and crowned with thorns. Saint John Paul II saw Him like this: “It is man, every man, every man in his unique, unrepeatable being, created and redeemed by God… Ecce homo!” It is true that we suffer together, as so many proofs of solidarity show us clearly now. But, in the final analysis, each person experiences suffering alone with God. Jesus’ solitude as He is shown to the people makes us think of the sick people who, because of current isolation measures, die without being able to say farewell to their families.

From AIDS to Assimilation: Representations of Male Homosexuality in Swedish Literature Timothy Ryan Warburton A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: Ann-Charlotte Gavel Adams, Chair Ia Dübois Andrew Nestingen Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Scandinavian Studies ©Copyright 2014 Timothy Ryan Warburton University of Washington Abstract From AIDS to Assimilation: Representations of Male Homosexuality in Swedish Literature Timothy Ryan Warburton Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Ann-Charlotte Gavel Adams, Barbro Osher Endowed Professor of Swedish Studies Department of Scandinavian Studies This dissertation examines representations of male homosexuality in Swedish literature from 1968-2013. Since the initial visibility of homosexuality with the coming-out of Bengt Martin on Swedish television in 1968, dominant gay rights discourses in Sweden have been characterized by internal dissent over the “proper” image of male homosexuality. Rather than tracing is origins to the Stonewall Inn Riots of 1969, this dissertation focuses on the AIDS crisis as a crucial and pivotal turning point in the history of homosexuality, and as playing an integral role in the shaping of contemporary discourses on male homosexuality. The project expands the history of homosexuality in Sweden beyond legislative milestones, and analyzes key sociopolitical moments in Swedish history in order to locate the literary representations into a broader context. This study is organized into four chapters that examine the literary representations of male homosexuality. The first two chapters of this study offer analyzes of the literary history as iii well as the political and legal discourses through which ideas about homosexuality were circulated.

religions Article The Incarnation of the Word: Andrea Della Robbia’s Annunciation and Adoration Altarpieces at La Verna Stephanie R. Miller Department of Visual Arts, Coastal Carolina University, Conway, SC 29528, USA; [email protected] Abstract: On the mountainous crest of the Apennines are several buildings comprising the monastic site of La Verna where St. Francis received his stigmata in 1224. Described in 1493 as another Jerusalem in the West, the monastery’s Chiesa Maggiore, Santa Maria degli Angeli, and the Chapel of the Stigmata house its most prominent images, Andrea della Robbia’s five altarpieces (c. 1476-c. 1493). This essay explores the beholder’s experiences before Andrea’s earliest two altarpieces at the Observant Franciscan monastery, the Annunciation and Adoration. The history and function of this monastery are considered in light of the themes of these altarpieces and their theological significance. Of relevance are the inscriptions on the altarpieces, which rather than simply identifying the accompanying images, propose interesting interpretations and influences for the altarpieces and which suggest interactive involvement between beholder and the altarpieces in the monastic spaces. Taken together, these works reveal a sensitivity to the specific needs of the Franciscan audience, context, and location and an awareness of Renaissance devotional practices. Keywords: Andrea della Robbia; Franciscan; La Verna; altarpiece; Incarnation; inscriptions Citation: Miller, Stephanie R. 2021. 1.
