Meher Baba Australia - Ocean of universal life In the hour of trial, let not our thoughts be for our limited selves, but for others, not prompted by our egos, but responsive to the claims of our divine selves, which unite us with the rest of mankind. We cannot dodge our responsibility by evasion. To ignore human suffering as merely an illusory aspect of the illusory universe is indefensible. Not by ignoring suffering, but by ministering to it with creative love, do we gain the road to Life Eternal. Not through aloofness or indifference, but by eager, selfless service are we brought nearer the fountain-source of that transcendental rhythm which is at the heart of God’s Universe. Service with reservations is mere window dressing. In identifying ourselves with a narrow group or faction, or with some limited ideal, we do not achieve a real fusion of our segregated selves, only the appearance of such fusion. The true merging of the limited self with the Ocean of Universal Life involves complete surrender of isolated existence in all its aspects. Foggy conjectures, or a hodgepodge of ideas are no substitutes for a clear definition of man’s true goal. He was here in my house, relaxing on the daybed, quite at ease and comfortable, wearing white cotton pajamas, in the Indian style. For us, it was a bit of an occasion to have him here, and we weren’t quite sure how to behave. It was like being with a distant relative-- that unexpected level of comfort and familiarity around someone that you don’t really know and haven’t spent much time with. So while it seemed the most natural thing in the world to have him here, it was also a little strange and awkward. All he asked, but he didn’t use words for this, was that one by one, we go to his side, touch his hand, and in doing so, receive his blessing. But some people didn’t even want to do that, which seemed odd to me. It was such an easy thing to do and he was asking so little of us. Now that I think of it, he seemed a little weary and I can certainly understand that. I don’t think he ever tires of loving or forgiving, but he still has to put up with us, and we can make things so difficult. No wonder that from time to time he needs a little rest.     Kali's Child Revisited —or— Didn't Anyone Check the Documentation? Swami Tyagananda∗ Jeffrey J. Kripal’s Kali’s Child has tremendous value for one very good reason: it is written by one who is not a part of the tradition that has grown around the life and teachings of Ramakrishna. Such works from “outside” the tradition are valuable because they often bring new perspectives and new life to a subject. These books can also provide a splendid opportunity for fruitful dialogue between those who are “inside” the tradition and those who are “outside.” Such dialogue has the potential to enliven research, broaden understanding, correct misconceptions and enrich the knowledge of people on both sides of the fence. Moreover, Kali’s Child is quite an interesting book. So interesting, in fact, that even as a dissertation at least one reader was found (we learn from the Foreword) “smiling often and laughing almost as often” when she took chapters of it to the beach. Academic dissertations, as we are painfully aware, are not generally known to produce this kind of effect! Kripal has an engaging writing style: were the book not strewn with endless reference numbers in parentheses and innumerable endnotes it could have passed for a novel.
