AFF Script Development Info Session April 15th, 6pm AFCOOP Office AFCOOP is pleased to host an info session about the Atlantic Film Festival’s Script Development Program on April 15th at 6pm in the AFCOOP office. Presented by Telefilm Canada & The Harold Greenberg Fund, this program offers a unique opportunity for Atlantic Canadian writers to develop their feature film ideas from an outline into a treatment and finally into a rough first draft.

Every great feature film begins with a well-written and dynamic screenplay. As original ideas and highly developed scripts are key elements to the success of the screen industry, the Atlantic Film Festival is looking for the best and most talented writers from the Atlantic region to participate in our annual Script Development Program. Presented by Telefilm Canada & The Harold Greenberg Fund, this program offers a unique opportunity for Atlantic Canadian writers to develop their feature film ideas from an outline into a treatment and finally into a rough first draft.

The first draft scripts will then be presented to a jury and writers will pitch their projects to a room of film producers at the 34th Atlantic Film Festival. It is during this Script Pitch Event that the writers will vie for a $10,000 development prize, made available through The Harold Greenberg Fund. After the pitch session, writers and producers will get a chance to discuss their projects further at a networking reception, sponsored by Telefilm Canada, with the hope of creating a working connection. Once writers have found a producer to work with, they will also be eligible to work with Telefilm Canada and the Harold Greenberg Fund to bring their project into further development.

THE PROCESS: The jury will select FOUR feature film outlines that will be developed into rough first drafts through three intensive weekend sessions under the guidance of Noel Baker, one of Canada’s top story editors. The writers will also attend a pitch workshop with Noel to hone their pitching technique. All writers will also take part in the Script Pitch Event, during the 34th Atlantic Film Festival, where the writers will pitch their feature film idea to a room of industry professionals with the aim of attaching a producer and/or director to the projects and to compete for the $10,000 development prize. Life’s a Pitch - the basics of pitching your idea to a TV broadcaster April 10, 2014, 6pm - 9pm Cost: $35 (AFCOOP Member) $45 (non-member) It doesn’t matter what TV program we’re talking about…Breaking Bad, Big Brother, Trailer Park Boys or Cops… all of them started with a PITCH. A Pitch is short, but it can take years to master. This 3-hour workshop is a good place to start.From the key elements of a great pitch, to actually giving it a shot; Sonya Jampolsky will also share bits from her years of pitching experience, the good, the bad and the just plain embarrassing. Be prepared to jump right in and pitch your concept for a TV program.

Instructor- Sonya Jampolsky Sonya Jampolsky has spent hours talking to herself and anyone else that will listen to her TV show pitches. With 15 years in the business as a director, writer, story editor and producer, she is also VP Development at Ocean Entertainment and can say she’s pitched just about every broadcaster in the Canadian and American marketplace. “Reel Justice” Screening during MayWorks Festival April 29th, 7:30pm AFCOOP Office

During Mayworks Festival this year AFCOOP is pleased to host a screening of short films that deal with social justice issues presented with Dalhousie University & Ujamaa. Our movie screens are colonized by Hollywood and its big business interests. Reel Justice responds with a collection of films you won’t see at the multiplex. Local filmmakers celebrate our many and varied heroes and wrangle with the issues of social justice that affect our community. This year, we begin with a tribute to Rocky Jones, and all donations collected at this screening will be given to the Burnley “Rocky” Jones Education Fund.

Evening program:

Encounter at Kwacha House (18 mins) – Rex Tasker, 1967 This short film presents a lively discussion between black and white youths at the interracial club in Halifax, touching on racial discrimination in employment, housing, education and interpersonal relations.

Making It (11 mins) – Sobaz Benjamin, 2006 This short documentary is a portrait of Black people who have overcome systemic and overt racism in the workplace to be successful in their careers. Made as part of the Work For All project 2006, an NFB and HRSDC-Labour initiative to combat racism in the workplace.

What Happened to Esther? (10 mins) – Jenna Marks, 2013 This animated short tells the story of an African Nova Scotian midwife and what happened to her on the day of the Halifax Explosion. Produced as a NSCAD thesis film.

Waters of the Diaspora: The Passage (1 min) – Sylvia D. Hamilton, 2013 This is a short poetic meditation on the lingering legacy of the transatlantic trade in African people. Water was central to that trade. A montage of moving images of water and waves is projected over the text of the poem that Hamilton voiced.

Scarlines (20 mins) – Stephanie Young, 2013 This film tells the story of Jack, a post-op transman who returns to his small hometown for the first time since his transition. Produced as a NSCAD thesis film.

Ask First (4.5 mins) – Brendan Anckaert, J. Mary Burnet & Kaleigh Trace, 2013 A parody written in response to Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” to promote enthusiastic consent and sex positivity in a shitty, heteronormative, patriarchal culture that objectifies women, normalizes rape, and blames survivors for their assault because they had “blurred lines.”

Spot the Immigrant (6.5 mins) – Pink Dog Productions, 2010 This game show parody turns stereotypes about new Canadians upside down. Developed in collaboration with new Canadians thanks to a project grant from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Wild West (3 mins) – Pink Dog Productions, 2010 A stranger arrives in town… This parody Western explores the challenges faced by those in the process of settling into their new country. Developed in collaboration with new Canadians through a project grant from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Don’t Dictate! NEGOTIATE! (4 mins) – Liz MacDougall, 2012 Frustrated with the lack of in-depth journalism during the six-week 2012 Halifax Transit strike, independent video makers went to the picket line on a frigid January day to get the story from the bus drivers themselves. The resulting video revealed the drivers’ deep concern over increasing erosion of our legislated rights to collective bargaining. This statement was then released to the public using YouTube, email and Facebook.

No Free Ride (3.5 mins) – Bruce MacDonald, 2013 The Award-winning Canadian director Bruce McDonald is sending a message to Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak about that party’s plans for the province’s unions. Produced in collaboration with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

Tidal Force – National Media Arts Summit This June, AFCOOP in partnership with the Independent Media Arts Alliance of Canada (IMAA), the Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival (HIFF), the Centre for Art Tapes (CFAT), and the National Indigenous Media Arts Alliance of Canada (NIMAC) will host a conference in Halifax on current topics in Media Arts. The summit will focus on the artistic, political, and social elements that are representative of current media arts practice inclusive of film, video, audio and new media. Voices in Longitude and Latitude Video installation by Marnina & Noam Gonick Organized by MSVU Art Gallery Ingrid Jenkner, Curator 22 March through 11 May 2014

Voices in Longitude and Latitude is a video installation about the aspirations of teen-aged girls in four communitiesundefined Inuit in Kugluktuk, Nunavut; trans- gender in Halifax; Jewish in Toronto; and Congolese, Rwandan, Ethiopian and Sudanese immigrants in Winnipeg. The girls, aged 13 to 23, appear in a 17-minute, four-screen projection. Shot on location, the video and audio components masterfully combine landscape and urban imagery with cinema vérité-style footage and studio interviews with the girls.

This exhibition represents the first collaboration between siblings Noam Gonick, the renowned Winnipeg filmmaker, and Dr. Marnina Gonick, Canada Research Chair in Gender at Mount Saint Vincent University. Welcome to the 2014 ViewFinders: Atlantic Film Festival for Youth!

Great films introduce audiences to new ideas, places and ways of life. And because of this, films are inherently educational. They teach us about different cultures and different people, but also inform the way we see our community and ourselves. Not only a nod to the optical lens of a camera, our festival is called ViewFinders because we truly believe cinema can teach young people how to find themselves and their identity.

Welcome to the 13th ViewFinders: Atlantic Film Festival for Youth. This festival would not be possible without the support of our government partners, sponsors and private donors. A special thank you also goes out to our friends within the education sector and especially our Teachers Advisory Committee (TAC). This body of educators watches every film that plays at ViewFinders, creating lesson plans that ensure the experience doesn’t end when students leave the theatre, but continues into the classroom.

In addition to a great daytime program of films from around the world, ViewFinders also celebrates the young Atlantic Canadians that have entered our filmmaking competitions. Congratulations on your achievement, directors. I truly hope this is just your first step in a long career with film. These youth-made films screen on April 11th and 12th, and I would encourage everyone to come and see this amazing display of talent.

ViewFinders is a proud member of the Atlantic Film Festival family. It is a daily inspiration to work alongside such passionate colleagues and collaborators. Call for Submissions White Rabbit Arts Residency & Festival

White Rabbit is a week-long artist residency in which emerging and established artists set up camp at beautiful Red Clay Studios to practice, create and collaborate. The residency culminates in a public festival for the performance and exhibition of individual and collaborative works that have emerged over the course of the week.

White Rabbit Open Air Arts Project is an immersive outdoor experience. We encourage artists from a broad range of disciplines (textiles, dance, theatre, ceramics, paint, poetry, philosophy, words, audio, documentary, film, performance, music, you-name-it!) to push the boundaries of their practice, and work together to create the environment that is formed collaboratively and individually in response to the unique landscape.

Short Film FaceOff CBC Television is pleased to announce another season of Short Film Face Off, Canada’s only television magazine program that features short films from across the country. Now in its seventh season, the critically acclaimed show has helped bring a mainstream audience for short films in Canada and increased the profile of its featured filmmakers. The CBC is looking for the best short films from every region to take part in this program.

In Short Film Face Off, films are screened for a panel of industry professionals who provide commentary and discuss the creative and technical aspects of the films with the filmmakers.

The series has a competitive component. The studio panel will choose three finalists and the television viewing audience will ultimately vote for the top film. The CBC and sponsors offer a prize made up of cash and production services to be used by the winning filmmaker towards his or her next short film. That film will be licensed for broadcast by the CBC.

Films must be under 12 minutes in length, must have been completed in the past two years, and must not have been broadcast on network television. We are looking for comedies and dramas. Music videos and documentaries are not suitable for this program. Directors must be available for tapings at CBC Halifax from June 17 to June 20. The program producers will pay all travel and accommodation costs.

Short Film Face Off is looking for innovative films that are compelling to watch. We are interested in fresh story ideas with memorable and engaging characters. Here are the criteria: - Up to 12 minutes in length (excluding credits). - Comedies and dramas are the preferred genres. Both live action and animation are eligible. Music videos and documentaries will not be considered for the program. The Interdisciplinary Arts Residency at The Banff Centre is designed to support artists, artistic collectives, and companies in the creation, investigation, and production of new work that crosses disciplines and genres. Utilizing the various artistic facilities on campus to combine art forms, artists will be able to explore projects blending music, theatre, dance, opera, literature, digital film, audio, media, or visual arts.

This latest offering from The Banff Centre is a fit for artists generating work that blurs boundaries: composers, choreographers, visual artists, writers, performance artists, photographers, filmmakers, dancers, playwrights, musicians, directors, and those involved in other new and emerging art practices. Artists at various stages of artistic practice are encouraged to apply, whether they are at the conceptual stage, ready for development and production, or preparing for presentation. Adjudication is based on artistic merit and the ability of The Banff Centre to help realize the project.

The Banff Centre offers work spaces and facilities suitable to the participants' needs. Artists can create in our dance, writing, or music studios; sound recording/design and editing facilities; production and post-production spaces; animation design, theatre production, and design shops (set, costumes, lighting, sound, and projection), and various visual arts facilities (printmaking, papermaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography). From these intimate spaces to the spectacular, The Banff Centre houses a variety of performance venues including two theatres, a concert hall, and cabaret-style club. Up to six teams will have the opportunity to develop their television projects with the best showrunners/story editors in the country.

About the Film Festival CLiFF features film and video made by, for, and about the world of work and those who do it, in Canada and internationally. The films we showcase are about unionised workers, as well as those not represented by unions. We encourage projects regarding any and every aspect of work, as well as issues affecting work or workers.

The festival draws trade unionists, community members, youth, activists, students, educators, artists, and allies from across North America and one day, we hope, the world.

Eligibility We are looking for films on a wide spectrum of issues. We seek films about privatization, youth, First Nations people, people of colour, immigrants, refugees, detainees, health and safety, resistance, art, poetry, women, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered people, taxi drivers, truck drivers, rickshaw drivers – anyone who does anything considered work.

We also encourage the widest possible variety of films: from documentaries to drama to poetry/poetic treatments to comedy and animation.

Call for short films: win up to $5K through the NSI Online Short Film Festival

Canadian short filmmakers have the chance to win up to $5,000 in cash awards through the National Screen Institute’s Online Short Film Festival. Short films are being accepted from now until Friday, April 25, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. CST.

The NSI Online Short Film Festival is a year-round Canadian short film showcase with new films added every week.

Congratulations to the 2014 Wave Award Winners The 2014 WAVE Awards were announced yesterday, capping the fourth annual Women Making Waves, a three-day conference marked by compelling speakers, dynamic panels and informative workshops.

Honouring outstanding contributions by women in film, television and digital media in the Atlantic Region, the one-of-a-kind awards went to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Noreen Golfman and Barbara Doran, and Nova Scotia’s Linda Wood.

“Each of these winners is unique and wonderful, and all of them loved the fact that the WAVE Awards have no categories – they simply honour women who deserve to be celebrated,” said Jan Miller, Chair of host organization Women in Film & Television-Atlantic (WIFT-AT).

“That fact allows the selection committee to make choices that truly celebrate women making a difference in the screen industry – in a multitude of fabulous ways.”

About the winners: - Noreen Golfman has been described as a “powerhouse of poise, confidence and witty charm.” The Dean of graduate studies at Memorial University, Golfman has played an integral role in building a cultural community in Newfoundland and Labrador. She was involved in the founding of the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival 25 years ago, is Vice-Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, and founded the MUN Cinema Series, among other contributions to the industry

- Linda Wood, the Director of Business & Legal Affairs at Film & Creative Industries Nova Scotia, has worked with virtually every producer in this province. A champion of Nova Scotia’s film, television and new media industry, Wood spent 11 years as a juror for the CBC/Film Nova Scotia Bridge Award and played an active role in the creation of the First Feature Project. - Barbara Doran has been producing and directing films for more than 30 years. With incredible energy, she has devoted herself to the history, culture and future of Newfoundland, while exploring stories around the globe. Her documentaries have covered the sweatshops of Guatemala, women prisoners in Pakistan, AIDS workers in Africa, and romance writers in the U.S. Her Gemini Award-winning miniseries, Random Passage, played to record audiences on CBC Television, and her newest feature, The Grand Seduction, was nominated as best feature at the Canadian Screen Awards

Volunteers Sought for the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council Are you interested in helping to shape the future of the province’s investment in cultural development? We are currently seeking volunteers to join the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council (CNSLC). This council provides leadership to the Nova Scotia government for the development of policy which strengthens the culture sector. The volunteer council, in partnership with government, advises and makes recommendations to the Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage on all matters that help to grow Nova Scotia’s creative spirit and enhance cultural activity through investment, investigation, promotion and preservation. A major focus of their work will be to support and advise on a long term strategy for culture. The activities of Council are guided under the authority of the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council Act. The Council’s selection committee and two other sector members will recommend volunteers for the 15-member council. The committee is seeking a range of experience among council members and will work to strike a balance between the arts and the cultural industries, not-for-profit arts organizations and individuals with an interest in helping shape a vibrant culture community. The committee will take into consideration ethnic, cultural and regional diversity and welcomes applicants from all cultural interests.

The Council meets monthly from September to June and reimburses its volunteer members for out-of-pocket travel expenses.
