Research Group:

Oncoen3D is a pioneering project in Spain using the 3D printing technology with the aim of enriching cancer stem cells (CSCs), which is the cause of a high percentage of treatment recurrences in different cancers including breast and lung.

The research team involves members of two different research groups from the medical and engineering fields. From medicine, there is New Therapeutic Targets (TargetsLab), led by Prof. Teresa Puig and, from engineering, the Product, Process and Production Engineering Research Group (GREP) led by Prof. Joaquim de Ciurana. Collaboration between both groups was born in 2014, and involve the cooperation between Biochemist, Biologist, Engineers, and Physicians. Together they have shown that cell culture in manufactured scaffolds by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and electrospinning with PLA or PCL polymeric material provides better physiologically environment and it leads to an enrichment of the CSCs population of human cancer cell lines as well. These two research areas have joined forces with the objective of identifying new targets and biomarkers for these two highly-incident malignant cancers.

New Therapeutic Targets (TargetsLab) is a multidisciplinary research team with a high experience in the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the pre-clinical anti-cancer effects of novel synthetic compounds with the aim of enlighten future combination

strategies for the treatments of HER2+, Triple Negative (TN) breast and lung cancer resistant to currently available therapies. Currently, they are focused on the advanced manufacturing technologies (such as 3D printing and electrospinning) to obtain scaffolds for three- dimensional cell culture, which have been proved to enrich and isolate the cancer stem-like cell subpopulation in breast and lung cancer cell models. Our research is focused in the identification of novel biomarkers (proteins, genes or epigenetic markers) to develop and test synthetic anti-cancer compounds (or novel treatment approaches) for those patients who have progressed to cancer treatment.

Product, Process and Production Engineering Group (GREP) is made up of PhD in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical engineers and industrial design engineers. Research focuses on various aspects of the product design, manufacturing processes and production economy. One goal is about characterization of manufacturing processes such as milling, micromachining, incremental sheet forming, ultrasound moulding and recently those technologies related to additive manufacturing process which includes 3D printing technologies.

The results derived from our research have been presented (oral and poster presentation) in several national and international meetings, increasing the group visibility.

At the same time, it pursues a vocation of universality and openness to all traditions and cultures. In the last 10 years, the UdG has participated in more than 160 European Projects, including 5 ERC projects.

Research Group: The research group “Soils and Vegetation in the Mediterranean (SOLIPLANT)” of the University of Girona (UdG; GRCT0093) is composed by the members of the Plant Physiology unit (Department of Environmental Sciences; https://www.udg.edu/ca/depca; CCAA) and the Edaphology and Agricultural Chemistry unit (Department of Chemical, Agrarian and Agro-Food Technology; https://www.udg.edu/ca/depeqata; EQATA) of the UdG. The group is recognized by the Catalan government (2017SGR0055).

SOLIPLANT is a multidisciplinary group whose main objective is to establish how the different factors of global change affect the functioning of terrestrial Mediterranean plants and ecosystems. Basically, the studies performed are focused on four research lines. The first refers to the study of the effects that an increase in UV radiation and drought may have on the functioning of Mediterranean shrubland communities and on the ecophysiology of different woody species, taking into account the plant-soil interaction. In the second line, the regeneration of Mediterranean plants after a disturbance, such as a fire, is analysed. In the framework of the third line, the effects of the use, change of use and abandonment of land on different parameters of soil quality (especially carbon sequestration capacity) are analysed. And finally, the fourth line consists on the study of the carbon balance of coastal marshes taking into account the vegetal communities and the soil.

4. Main reseach lines of interest 1) Response of the Mediterranean species to different factors of climate change. Permanent researchers: Laura Llorens, Dolors Verdaguer

The group has extensive experience in studying the responses of vegetation (at plant, community and ecosystem level) to several factors of climate change, such as: the increase in temperature, atmospheric CO2, drought, or ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In recent years, we have focused our research on the study of the last two factors. Changes in UVB radiation can have significant effects on the Earth's biosphere, affecting the carbon cycle and the cycles of the inorganic nutrients of the ecosystems. During the last 3 decades there has been an increase in the UVB (280-320 nm) and UV-A (320-400 nm) doses reaching the Earth's surface due, mainly, to the depletion of stratospheric ozone. Despite in 1987 the emissions of CFCs (main cause of the reduction of the ozone layer) were forbidden, some models predict that, at medium latitudes, UV radiation values prior to 1980 will not be recovered until 2040-2070. On the other hand, the reduction of cloudiness that is expected for the next decades in Europe during summer could increase the UV radiation fluxes that reach the ecosystems. In addition, it is expected that, as a result of climate change: a) water availability, one of the most important factors in the modulation of the plant responses to UVB radiation, will be reduced in large areas of the planet, among them the Mediterranean region, and b) fire frequency will increase in the Mediterranean region, which can modulate the responses of vegetation to changes in UVB radiation and water availability. For all this, our research group is interested in 1) studying how changes in UV radiation and/or water availability can affect the structure and functioning of Mediterranean ecosystems before and after a disturbance (fire), and 2) providing more information on the response mechanisms of Mediterranean species to changes in UV radiation and/or water availability before and after a disturbance. Studies performed in relation to this last point always integrate plant morphological, biochemical, physiological and growth measures. Changes in plant phenology in response to these factors have also been assessed, especially in relation to reproduction.

2) Post-disturbance regeneration of Mediterranean plant species. Permanent researchers: Dolors Verdaguer, Laura Llorens

Mediterranean ecosystems are subjected to frequent disturbances, such as fire, which affect the plant aerial biomass. In the next decades, it is predicted that the frequency and intensity of fires will increase due to climate change. Variation in the regime of fires can affect plant responsiveness, which could induce changes at the community level. Two types of species are distinguished according to their fire response: seeders and resprouters, which, in fact, are the extremes of a gradient. Seeder species die because of

“EXPRESSION OF INTEREST” FOR HOSTING MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE FELLOWS CALL FOR PROPOSALS MSCA-IF-2019

the fire and their recovery depends entirely on the germination of seeds that have remained viable after the fire. Conversely, resprouter species survive the fire and are capable of sprouting and growing thanks to the protected buds and stored reserves (mainly starch) present in the underground organs. Resprouters are especially important since their populations remain after the fire and their fast recover favours animal establishment and avoids soil erosion. Despite their ecological importance, organs involved in resprouting, as well as their functioning, are unknown for many species. For this reason, part of our research focuses on providing more information on the ontogeny, morpho-anatomy and biochemistry of the different organs specialized in vegetative regeneration. Moreover, the expansion of some of the most important invasive species is close tied to its capacity to regenerate vegetatively. Therefore, our group is also interested in determining the organs involved in the vegetative reproduction in these species, in order to better understand the factors that influence their invasiveness. Another of our aims is to determine the functional changes in plants after a disturbance, in order to understand the physiological mechanisms that explain the rapid recovery of their aerial biomass. In parallel, community-level studies have been conducted to determine how different climate change factors can affect the secondary succession after a fire.

3) Effects of use, land use change and abandonment of land on different parameters of soil quality (especially carbon sequestration capacity). Permanent researchers: Maria Gispert

Soil is a natural resource that, along with water and air, makes life possible on Earth, but it is often not considered. Soil acts as a regulator of a long chain of factors and processes that take place in the environment, influences global climate, regulates important processes of the hydrological cycle, and serves as a medium for the growth of plants and the development of a great diversity of organisms. The investigation of the research group focuses on the study of the vulnerability of the soil due to the abandonment of land and/or to land use changes, by characterizing soil physical and chemical parameters and determining soil biochemical traits (such as enzymatic activities, respiration, presence of glomalin, carbon sequestration, etc.) in order to identify soil degradation and/or recovery processes. Specifically, the research is mainly developed in two areas: 1) low Mediterranean mountain land abandonment with the consequent proliferation of spontaneous shrubland vegetation and fires, and 2) contaminated soils, such as those near abandoned metal mines in which there are floating sludge deposits and shredding residues of exploded minerals (usually sulfides) that contribute to the diffused contamination of heavy metals through processes of transfer, transport and concentration of potentially toxic phases. Depending on the degree of contamination, different soil rehabilitation techniques are used, including phytoremediation or the application of specific amendments.

4) Study of the structure and dynamics of coastal marshes to evaluate their role as carbon sinks. Permanent researchers: Laura Llorens, Dolors Verdaguer, Maria Gispert

Coastal lagoons are very often surrounded by marshes dominated by dense halophilic vegetation. These coastal marshes play a very important role in the global carbon balance. In fact, although marshes cover a relatively small portion of the Earth's surface (4-6%), it is estimated that 25-30% of the world carbon is stored in the soil of these ecosystems.

“EXPRESSION OF INTEREST” FOR HOSTING MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE FELLOWS CALL FOR PROPOSALS MSCA-IF-2019

However, despite of their importance, there is a lack of studies evaluating the role as carbon reservoirs and/or as sinks or sources of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) of coastal marshes of the Mediterranean Basin. For this reason, another part of our research is focused on evaluating the carbon balance (CO2 and CH4) of a Mediterranean coastal salt marsh (La Pletera) through two methods: a) the estimation of carbon stored in the different systems of the marsh (vegetation and soil) and b) the analysis of dynamic fluxes of CO2 and CH4 in these systems throughout the year. The first method provides information on the amount of carbon contained in each system and, when data is obtained in distinct years, allows the estimation of the net primary production (NPP). The second method provides information on how the ecosystem carbon sink capacity is affected by daily or seasonal variations of environmental factors (temperature, solar radiation, humidity, etc.).

4. Main research lines of interest

Funded research lines at the moment are: 1- Bacterial Electrosynthesis

Bacterial Electrosynthesis is on the forefront of research activities devoted to the discovery of new, sustainable and environmentally friendly processes for the conversion of raw materials into products by biosynthesis. gEMM investigates the effect of operational conditions of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) on the development of biofilms over time and how different bacterial associations can lead to the formation of different products and services. We apply sound molecular techniques to discover microbial community structures and to measure cell activity and its relation to the usage of electrons in biocathodes. Our goal is to produce a resilient and robust biocathode that could be applied in biofuel producing BES.

2- Bioelectrochemically assisted remediation of ground water.

Bioelectrochemical systems have been proven effective in accelerating RedOx processes, such as denitrification, and are suitable for decontamination purposes. Some of the main advantages of bioelectroremediation are its modularity and the low dependency on energy sources. At gEMM we work at developing stable mixed bacterial consortia for the simultaneous elimination of arsenite and nitrate from contaminated ground water. Our challenge is to provide the necessary energy to fill the gap between the reduction (Nitrate) and oxidation (arsenite) steps in the consortia. We aim at using scaled-up bioelectrochemical systems for in situ remediation of ground water.

3- Biogas upgrading technologies.

Biogas obtained from the anaerobic digestion of sludge is not suitable to be directly fed into the gas distribution grid because it contains contaminants. Among these contaminants, siloxanes are of special interest. On the one hand, they may cause some toxic effects on aquatic animals at low concentrations. On the second hand, siloxanes can be oxidized and precipitated as silicates during burning, thus collapsing pipes and turbines. At gEMM, we isolated some bacterial strains with promising siloxane removal capacities that are currently being tested in biotrickling filters for biogas upgrading. Our objective is to use sound genome editing protocols to create new strains with enhanced removal capacities.

Research Group: Prof. Toni Ñaco del Hoyo currently coordinates a large fully funded research group (25 members and several collaborators) devoted to the history, archaeology and heritage preservation of Prehistory, Classical Antiquity and the Late Antiquity (2017SGR-1688). In December 2018, a ‘Beatriu de Pinós’ Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Ancient Greek History -Dr Daniel Gómez-Castro who had formerly worked as a JSPS Research Fellow in Japan- joined this Group for 2 years. Prof. Ñaco del Hoyo's own research team and interests lie predominantly with the history and archaeology of the Roman Republic. He is currently a member of Libera Res Publica, a Network of Spanish Roman Republican Historians, led by Dr Cristina Rosillo-López and Prof. Francisco Pina Polo. Together with Dr Jordi Principal (Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya- Barcelona), Prof. Ñaco del Hoyo has worked on the Roman intervention in the ‘Far West’ and its ‘connectivity’. More generally, he has conducted research on Republican taxation (recently revisited), collateral damage, garrisoning strategies, asymmetrical warfare, military intelligence and logistics, crisis management, international relations and peacebuilding studies in the Classical World. Four of Prof. Ñaco del Hoyo’s PhD student’s dissertations (mostly supervised jointly with other colleagues) were successfully examined in 2015 and 2016 (Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona), and 2017 (Universitat de Barcelona), together with 2 Master theses in 2017 (UdGirona). He currently supervises 5 PhD students in Girona, 4 of them working on topics related to the Middle Roman Republic. He has regularly renewed his ‘Academic Visitor’

4. Main reseach lines of interest

1.- Roman Republican warfare, particularly in the ‘Far West’. At the moment, Dr J. Principal, Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya-Barcelona and myself aim to continue the research already conducted thanks to a 2015-18 project grant which explored Republican warfare in NE Iberiabetween133-72 BCE, by means of the twofold perspective provided by a team formed by Roman Historians and Classical Archaeologists. For the next coming years, we intend to expand this project’s horizons to new regions outside of Roman Spain. In particular, we will dig deeper into the connectivity between NE Iberia and the Northern Mediterranean, both by land and across the sea. Furthermore, thanks to a recently granted four-year archaeological research project on the Iberian Ausetanian region (Osona, Barcelona), we shall focus our resources (excavation campaigns, laboratory analysis, studies on coin finds) on one particular site, El Camp de les LLoses (Tona), an excellent example of hybridization between local Iberians and external individuals (Romans and Italians). Our main goal is to connect this hybrid site from the NE with similar ones located Northern the Pyrenees.

2.- Politics, finances, empire building and its collateral damage in the classical world: a dialogue between the Humanities and the Social Sciences. A second area of research will focus its study on the expansion of political and military hegemonies and their huge costs during the Graeco-Roman Mediterranean, and particularly in Republican and Hellenistic periods. As illustrated in the recent publication of a volume (co-edited with another colleague) on War, Warlords and Interstate relations in the Ancient Mediterranean (Leiden-Boston 2018), with a high profile line-up of multidisciplinary contributors. In this volume, we have recently attempted to expand our interests in the ancient world to new scientific approaches provided by the social sciences (e.g. international relations theories). Furthermore, two of us have extensively participated in a workshop (2017) and a conference (2018) on ‘Spoils in the Roman Republic’, organized by the Ancient History Section of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and whose proceedings will be published in due course.

3.- Fostering new research on the Middle Roman Republic. From 2018, together with our current PhD students based in Girona we have focused our attention on a more particular period of research, setting in motion the so-called ‘Group of Studies in the Middle Roman Republic’. This informal team encourages work-in-progress discussions on the social, political, and financial institutions, mentality, and interstate relations of Rome’s third and second centuries BCE. After having devoted some of our own research efforts to the Late Republic, here we aim to attract new researchers –from postgraduate to postdoctoral levels- to join us in order to

“EXPRESSION OF INTEREST” FOR HOSTING MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE FELLOWS CALL FOR PROPOSALS MSCA-IF-2019

foster new research (and particularly new approaches) on this central period of Roman Republican History. 5. Who can apply?

Research Group on Animal Biology: Our research team seeks to understand how animals live and reproduce, what are their functions in the ecosystem, how do they interrelate, how do they respond to ecological disturbances and what conservation problems are they facing. We are focused on the assessment of the terrestrial and marine biodiversity in relation to the current environmental challenges: climate change, wildfires, overfishing, invasive species and habitat fragmentation. Our researchers regularly publish in international journals on zoology, ecology, biodiversity conservation, forestry, fisheries, ichthyology, entomology and ornithology. Our studies mainly focus on ants, cicadas, fish, birds and mammals as main indicator groups.

4. Main research lines of interest Our research group works on different lines of research:

Fauna, wild-fire and forestry management We are interested in the assessment of the ecological effects of wildfire and prescribed burning. To this aim, we use birds-vegetation system as our main study model. Recently, we have particularly focused on the ecosystem consequences of logging burned forests. We have described positive and negative effects on threatened species of birds. Our findings support that non-commercial woody debris (especially when building piles of branches) is relevant for biodiversity and ecosystem services after salvage logging. We are committed to transfer our results to the forest sector. From the applied side, we have elaborated a Handbook of good practices on post-fire forest management. Currently we are doing research on the role of biological legacies for ecosystem regeneration after fire. Researcher in-charge: [email protected]

Ichthyology Our research focus on several biological aspects of marine fish species such as feeding strategy, reproductive strategy, parasitism, and the impacts of fishing and pollutants (i.e. heavy metals) on the fish health, the quality of the fish and the potential effects on the consumers. Researcher in-charge: [email protected]

Biological invasions My research focuses on the ecology and management of biological invasions, particularly in understanding the distribution of invasive alien species and in contributing to the development of novel approaches for their management. Currently, I am involved in two main projects dealing with: (1) the development of future scenarios for biological invasions, and (2) the ecology and control of Vespa velutina. In collaboration with other researchers, we use sophisticated analysis to understand the factors determining the spatial dynamics of biological invasions and therefore assess changes in their future ranges based on model predictions. We also conduct field studies to investigate the ecology and spread of invasive species. Researcher in-charge: [email protected]

Myrmecology Our main research topic is the myrmecochory. Our aims are to assess the role, consequences and benefits of this interaction for both, ants and plants. We investigate the impacts and responses of ants’ communities in front of several perturbations such as land-use changes, forestry exploitation, climate change and wild-fires. We also study the reproductive physiology, the behaviour and the chemical communication of the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile, Mayr), an invasive species found across the globe, with the aim to seek for specific methods to control its invasion. Researcher in-charge: [email protected]

“EXPRESSION OF INTEREST” FOR HOSTING MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE FELLOWS CALL FOR PROPOSALS MSCA-IF-2019

Ornithology We study bird populations and communities as indicators of ecosystem changes in studies on the impact of wildfires, biological invasions and agriculture. 4. Main research lines of interest

Evaluation of the fish reproduction and the condition in relation to species preservation the species, fisheries management and the health of the consumers.

We assess the species reproductive strategy, length at maturity, annual cycle and fecundity (i.e. egg quality and quantity). We also study the condition status of fish using different kinds of indicators such as morphometric and somatic indices, lipid contents and parasitism intensity and prevalence. We integrate both approaches to investigate the interrelationships between condition and reproduction as well as with the environmental conditions and the extrinsic pressures (e.g. fishing).

Impact of fisheries and climate change on marine resources

Based on the study of the status of the exploited fish species, we assess the impact of fisheries and provide information to be used in stocks management. We do research on the effects of climate change on fish distribution, health status and reproductive potential.

Study of the benthic marine communities, both from a fundamental research perspective through systematic studies, taxonomy and ecophysiology of macroalgae, and from an applied perspective to assess the main effects that alter the marine flora and to develop strategies and plans for their recovery and restoration.

In this line our main topics are: - Biodiversity: the data provided by these studies can be used as a reference point to detect future changes - Invasive species: these studies seek three aims (i) to assess the effects of the invasive species on the native communities, (ii) to identify the main factors that determine the invasivitiy of the native communities and (iii) to describe the invasive capacity of exotic species. - Global warming: we do research on the direct and indirect effects of global warming as a first step to develop prediction tools and to improve our understanding of its consequences on the ecosystems.

2. Brief Description of the Institution

The University of Girona (UdG) is located in Girona city and is part of the Catalan public university system since 1992. The UdG, deeply rooted in Catalonia and the Catalan culture, is one of the primary economic and cultural motors of the region.

Funded research lines at the moment are: 4- Bacterial Electrosynthesis

5- Bioelectrochemically assisted remediation of ground water.

6- Biogas upgrading technologies.

Research Group:

The central idea that unifies the Group is the statistical analysis of compositional data. In Geology, Petrology, Chemistry, Economics, Archaeometry, etc. we are used to work with vectors whose components represent relative parts of a whole. In fact, we are working with the mathematical foundations under the statistical analysis of this kind of data, and also with some of their wide-range applications.

From the vast workings of professor J. Aitchison in this field, built up from a statistical point of view since the early eighties, we have seen that rigorous mathematical foundations are needed to properly understand and apply these techniques. We base them in the definition of a geometric structure for the Simplex (the support space of compositional data). Afterwards, traditional statistical techniques (cluster, discriminant, factor analysis, regression models, etc.) are being adapted to this structure: we are covering both their real- case application and theoretical development, from measure theory or algebraic geometry to differential calculus in the simplex.

Furthermore, we are developing our own statistical package, the CoDaPack, due the total lack of a specific and user-friendly software intended to treat compositional data. For more information visit our CoDaweb: http://www.compositionaldata.com.

4. Main research lines of interest

The CoDa-research group activities basically focus on the societal challenges: “Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing” and “Digital economy, society and culture”. Besides, the CoDa-research group also deals with the resolution of problems associated to other societal challenges. The origin of the research lines of the group trace back to the end of the 19th century when K. Pearson warns of the dangers of the spurious correlation. In the eighties J. Aitchison presents a methodology for the statistical analysis of compositional data. He defines the simplex as the sample space for Coda: vectors of positive components with constant sum (e.g., 100%). The relative nature of the information contained in a composition suggests that, when comparing two compositions (distance) and when analysing the association between the parts of a composition (correlation), one has to use ratios, between rows or columns of the data matrix respectively. When taking logarithms, the log-ratios are defined in all the real space. The metric structure of the sample space leads us to the create log-ratio coordinates in an orthonormal basis for the representation of compositional vectors. Following the principle ‘working on coordinates’, a compositional analysis use the classical methods on these coordinates. Because the compositions are equivalence classes of vectors in the positive Real space, the compositional analysis of data is a methodology to those analysts interested in the study of the relative information of the parts, without the sum constraint restriction. This proposal extends the use of the compositional methods and opens a door for a general use in other fields. In addition, to have more complete data information, the compositional analysis has to be complemented with the information as regards to the ‘compositional total’. The goals proposed for the next few years can be classified in the three general objectives:  advance the available methodology for taking a compositional approach to modelling and analysis of high-dimensional data with applications on genetics, omics and health sciences;  develop techniques for optimising the information in the compositional analyses, with applications in engineering, industry, and health sciences; and  adapt compositional methodology to the common problems in financial ratio analysis and economic and social indicators. These goals form part of the following research lines:  Determination of physical activity trajectories; Fundamentals on constrained optimization; DOE and Health sciences applications; Methods for absolute zeros; Predictive modelling of livestock methane emissions; Distances in microbiome; Canonical principal balances; GLM using LRNM; Propensity score. Financial log-ratio

4. Main reseach lines of interest

It has long been recognized that metal spin states play a central role in the reactivity of important biomolecules and in inorganic chemistry catalysis. Molecules with different numbers of unpaired electrons, hence with different spin states, have distinct geometric structures, energetic properties and reactivity. Elucidating the role and effect of different spin states on the properties of a system is presently one of the most challenging endeavors both from an experimental and theoretical point-of-view. This is in particular true for reaction mechanisms where the spin-state and/or oxidation state of a metal can change during the reaction.

Within the Swart group we are focusing on how the spin state and oxidation state influences the reactivity and spectroscopy of transition-metal complexes. A variety of interesting topics are studied such as antioxidant biomimetic complexes for catalase activity, oxidation reactions of (high-valent) metal-oxo species, and what is the role on these of Lewis acids.

Accurate descriptions of the energy surfaces and how these are determined by the spin and oxidation states, need accurate descriptions of the spin-state energies. Within our group we have studied this extensively through newly constructed density functionals (e.g. S12g). This leads to well-defined and accurate descriptions of both the geometric and electronic structure of transition-metal complexes, based on either manganese, cobalt, iron, copper or nickel. Much of our work is highlighted in an Accounts of Chemical Research (www.dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.accounts.6b00271), and in the recently published Wiley book on “Spin states in Biochemistry and inorganic chemistry: Influence on Structure and Reactivity” (www.dx.doi.org/10.1002/9781118898277).

Research Group: The Catalysis and Sustainability research group focuses on the synthesis and characterization of transition metal complexes, to carry out catalytic processes of industrial interest, from a basic research point of view. Its work focuses on the basis of the chemical sustainability, minimizing the environmental impact arising from the use of chemical oxidants and polluting solvents. Additionally, the research group also investigates new strategies to immobilize homogeneous catalysts onto different types of supports. Heterogenization is a suitable way to extend the practical advantages presented by homogeneous catalysis, broadening its scope and contributing to the sustainability of the processes. This heterogenization is carried out by the functionalization of ligands and / or complexes with suitable linkers to be anchored on different supports such as magnetic nanoparticles coated with silica, and graphene, among others.

The Catalysis and Sustainability research group is supervised by Dr. M. Isabel Romero and Dr. Montserrat Rodríguez. The group was born in 2005 and has obtained funding projects from the Spanish State and from the AGAUR (Generalitat de Catalunya). The team has also trained 11 PhD students, directed several final master and final degree projects, which have led to remarkable number of international publications. These publications are mostly from first quartile. The team keeps international and national collaborations that yield an outstanding research activity despite its relatively small dimension and short life.
