The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy Dr. Valerie Scatamburlo-D'Annibale University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada Abstract This article explores how Donald Trump capitalized on the right's decades-long, carefully choreographed and well-financed campaign against political correctness in relation to the broader strategy of 'cultural conservatism.' It provides an historical overview of various iterations of this campaign, discusses the mainstream media's complicity in promulgating conservative talking points about higher education at the height of the 1990s 'culture wars,' examines the reconfigured anti- PC/pro-free speech crusade of recent years, its contemporary currency in the Trump era and the implications for academia and educational policy. Keywords: political correctness, culture wars, free speech, cultural conservatism, critical pedagogy Introduction More than two years after Donald Trump's ascendancy to the White House, post-mortems of the 2016 American election continue to explore the factors that propelled him to office. Some have pointed to the spread of right-wing populism in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis that culminated in Brexit in Europe and Trump's victory (Kagarlitsky, 2017; Tufts & Thomas, 2017) while Fuchs (2018) lays bare the deleterious role of social media in facilitating the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. and elsewhere. Identity and Hybridity – Chinese Culture and Aesthetics in the Age of Globalization Karl-Heinz Pohl Introduction: Culture and Identity Thirty years ago (1977), Thomas Metzger published a book which became well known in Sinological circles: Escape from Predicament: Neo-Confucianism and China’s Evolving Political Culture. In this book, Metzger discusses a serious problem Chinese scholars were confronted with at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century: the modernization of China and catching up with the West without giving up two thousand years of culturally valuable Confucian teachings. From the 1920s on, Confucian thought was replaced by Marxist ideology and, with the beginning of the Peoples’ Republic in 1949, the latter was firmly established as the new order of discourse. Metzger argues persuasively, however, in spite of all the new leftist ideology that poured into China after the May Fourth Movement of 1919, that Confucianism was not relegated to the museum of History of Philosophy in China as Joseph Levenson (in his Confucian China and its Modern Fate of 1958) had predicted. Instead, Confucian thought – as an integral part of the Chinese cultural psyche – survived and remained influential, though not visible, in shaping modern China. Even radicals of this time, such as Mao Tse-tung, although they attempted to give China a completely new ideological order, were formed by their cultural tradition to such an extent that it was impossible to shake it off completely. The above historical example is significant for our theme. It concerns the question of persistence of culture in the face of cultural encounters – both of the unfriendly kind, such as the first “clash of civilizations” between China and the West in the 19th century (after the Opium Wars), as well as of the latest and somewhat friendlier meeting, the process of mingling and interpenetration of cultures called globalization.1 Hence, the significance of culture and cultural identity in the age of globalization remains a question to be answered. -

Opening a Dialogue between Cultural Conservatism and Modernism MICHAELS. ROTH theme that by now has become more than a little familiar to readers of A democracy is the conflict between cultural conservatism and modernism. The former is often a vehicle for the defense of tradition; its chief concern is not "high" or "elite" culture, but the more popular beliefs and practices of commun ity life. The protection and cultivation of these beliefs and practices is figured as politically progressive-progress here signifying the reinvigoration of the values people hold in common in opposition to the brutal march of development. From the perspective of the cultural conservative, the modernist serves the ideology of this development insofar as he celebrates the new at the expense of the accepted, and insofar as he thinks of culture-or makes cultural products-in a form that speaks to a very small elite of culture consumers who have passed through an education/ initiation to which most people do not have access. From the point of view of the modernist, the cultural conservative is necessary to defend forms of expression that are in decline, if not anachronistic. The defender of tradition may simply be viewed as "anticulture," since culture is assimilated by the modernist to the cultivation of innovation. The defender of a community's beliefs and practices is either naive or in bad faith: he celebrates community life without really participating in it; defends a faith without sharing in it the way other believers do. Despite their mutual antagonism, the cultural conservative and the modernist do share some of the same presuppositions and goals. -

It examines the connections between pre-Qin (秦朝: 221– 206 BCE) Daoist and Confucian philosophies, focusing on their differences as well as similarities. While it has been traditionally accepted that there are many tensions, and even antagonism, between concepts and approaches in Daoist and Confucian thought, the discussion here also focuses on the historical linkages and philosophical continuities that at times blur the distinction between the two. The primary comparison here will be conducted at three levels: the individual within its environment, the socio-political world, and the cultivation of the self. These three levels of analysis are organized in three sections, from the more inclusive to the more specific. However, the sections are only theoretical divisions, since both Daoist and Confucian philosophies emphasize a concept of selfhood that focuses on an individual’s relationships with others, within a larger natural and cosmic environment. To more fully understand these comparisons, it is important also to examine the intellectual climate within which interactions between so- called Daoism and Confucianism took place. These details, including information gleaned from relatively recently discovered texts, are not merely tangential to our understanding of both philosophies. -

Julia Ching attempted to answer this in her article, “The Problem of God in Confucianism” (1977): Yes, there was, but not always. Ching argued that if we try to find a personal God in the ancient Confucian classics, such as the Book of Document and the Book of Songs, that is“both awe- inspiring and loving as in Christianity”, we may find much evidence to show that “Shangdi” (上帝, Supreme Emperor or Emperor on High) is such a personal deity that is both a “Creator” and “Lord of history” (Ching 1977, 5–6). Shangdi had been the name of the highest deity since Shang dynasty (1600–1046 BCE) and continuously worshiped through Chinese history. However, for neo-Confucians, such a personal deity, Shangdi, would be substituted for an abstract principle (理, li). For Zhu Xi (1130–1200), this would be the Supreme Ultimate (太極, taiji), and for Wang Yangming (1472–1529), the heart or good conscience (良知, liangzhi). Although Ching tried to make analogies between neo- Confucians and Christian theologians to demonstrate that the Absolute concepts in Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming are comparable with the God in the writings of Nicholas of Cusa and Eckhart, respectively, in Ching’s opinion, generally speaking, in the neo- Confucian tradition, Shangdi almost lost its position as a personal deity (Ching 1977, 19–24). -

The Heritage of Non-theistic Belief in China Joseph A. Adler Kenyon College Presented to the international conference, "Toward a Reasonable World: The Heritage of Western Humanism, Skepticism, and Freethought" (San Diego, September 2011) Naturalism and humanism have long histories in China, side-by-side with a long history of theistic belief. In this paper I will first sketch the early naturalistic and humanistic traditions in Chinese thought. I will then focus on the synthesis of these perspectives in Neo-Confucian religious thought. I will argue that these forms of non-theistic belief should be considered aspects of Chinese religion, not a separate realm of philosophy. Confucianism, in other words, is a fully religious humanism, not a "secular humanism." The religion of China has traditionally been characterized as having three major strands, the "three religions" (literally "three teachings" or san jiao) of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Buddhism, of course, originated in India in the 5th century BCE and first began to take root in China in the 1st century CE, so in terms of early Chinese thought it is something of a latecomer. Confucianism and Daoism began to take shape between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. But these traditions developed in the context of Chinese "popular religion" (also called folk religion or local religion), which may be considered a fourth strand of Chinese religion. And until the early 20th century there was yet a fifth: state religion, or the "state cult," which had close relations very early with both Daoism and Confucianism, but after the 2nd century BCE became associated primarily (but loosely) with Confucianism. -

A Large-Scale Cross-National Test ARIEL MALKA, YPHTACH LELKES AND CHRISTOPHER J. SOTO* The right–left dimension is ubiquitous in politics, but prior perspectives provide conflicting accounts of whe- ther cultural and economic attitudes are typically aligned on this dimension within mass publics around the world. Using survey data from ninety-nine nations, this study finds not only that right–left attitude organization is uncommon, but that it is more common for culturally and economically right-wing attitudes to correlate negatively with each other, an attitude structure reflecting a contrast between desires for cultural and economic protection vs. freedom. This article examines where, among whom and why protection–freedom attitude organization outweighs right–left attitude organization, and discusses the implications for the psychological bases of ideology, quality of democratic representation and the rise of extreme right politics in the West. ELEMENTS OF CHINESE RELIGION Professor Russell Kirkland Department of Religion University of Georgia 1) CONFUCIANISM: A humanistic value-system based on the teachings of Confucius (Kongzi: 551- 479 BCE). It stresses the moral responsibilities of the individual as a member of society. Confucian ideals are to be attained in one's everyday life, through individual moral cultivation and the fulfillment of one's proper roles in society. Though the early thinkers Mencius (Mengzi) and Hsün-tzu (Xunzi) debated human nature, Confucians generally share a common assumption that human nature and/or society are ultimately perfectible. Though called "humanistic," Confucian ideals were originally grounded in a belief that humanity is perfectible because our higher qualities somehow come from "Heaven" (T'ien/Tian). Also, the Confucian tradition includes a liturgical tradition in which Confucius is venerated as a spiritual being. But most Confucian leaders since the 10th century have been humanistic intellectuals leery of any concept of a personalized higher reality. Influenced by Taoism and Buddhism, those "Neo-Confucians" developed sophisticated metaphysical theories as well as meditative practices. Westerners often overlook the Neo-Confucian pursuit of individual "sagehood." 2) TAOISM: Includes both a classical school of thought (fl. 4th-2nd centuries BCE) and an organized religion (fl. 2nd-12th centuries CE). Classical Taoism — represented by texts like the Nei-yeh (Neiye), Lao-tzu (Laozi), Chuang-tzu (Zhuangzi), and Huai-nan-tzu (Huainanzi) — stressed a return to natural harmony with life's basic realities; such harmony, they thought, typified humanity's original state. Later Taoism is rich and complex. It began as a sacerdotal, liturgical tradition centered upon the socio-political ideal of a world that functions in holistic harmony. -
The Book of Documents
The Book of Documents Translation by James Legge (1923); Notes by Chris Heselton The Book of Documents is an ancient compiled collection of various historical legends of Chinese antiquity from mythical foundations to the Zhou dynasty. The original title of the collection was simply “the Documents” – as in THE documents - but were later called the “the Esteemed Documents” or “the Classic Documents” to be more clear as the word “document” over time came to mean the word “book”. In English, it has come to be known as “the Book of Documents,” “the Classic of History,” and sometimes “The Book of Kings.” The Book of Documents is broken into several “Books” or volumes, with several chapters or “Scrolls” that range in topic from chronologies, geographies, and stories about the rulers of the distant past. Traditionally, the Book of Documents is believed to be a collation of ancient text compiled by the philosopher Confucius (551-479 BCE), but historians and philologist are dubious of such claims. Nonetheless, it is well established that the Book of Documents was compiled and well-known by the 4th century BCE through contemporary references and citation. The version we have today is possibly not a reliable copy of the original. With the “Burning of the Books and Burying of the Scholars” in the late 3rd century BCE, many such text were lost. In the Han dynasty, Confucian scholars emerged with two versions: One reconstructed from memory by Fu Sheng called the “New Text” and another found in the wall of Confucius’ descendants called the “Old Text.” These two versions have many contradictions and additional/missing chapters.
