In addition to the scientific research and technological innovation, CIMA is involved in service delivery, graduate training and knowledge transference to the society. The CIMA researchers develop their scientific activity using a multidisciplinary approach, which contributes to produce an integrate knowledge of the ecosystems’ behaviour and to understand the evolution resulting from global changes and anthropogenic impacts. These activities are developed in several territorial foci, of which the Ria Formosa is one of the most intensely studied by the CIMA researchers. More than 60 titles of scientific papers published so far in journals of international circulation contain the designation of Ria Formosa. Many other dozens of scientific articles are also devoted to the study of the Ria Formosa barrier-island system without including this designation in the title. Dozens of master's and doctoral theses from various national and foreign universities have investigated Ria Formosa's ecology, biology, morphology, hydrodynamics, evolution and socio-economy. Thus, why CIMA decided to publish this book over the Ria Formosa? Precisely because of the intrinsic scientific value of this extraordinary wet zone located in the southern coast of the Algarve, and also several researchers of the CIMA investigate or have investigated the Ria Formosa in its multiple aspects as we can see throughout the chapters of this book. The scientific dissemination is the main goal of this book. It synthesizes part of the scientific knowledge undertaken by various researchers allowing an integrated view of the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon. The book does not pretend to be exhaustive, as many other works have been carried out. However, we think that readers will find information for an integrated view of the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon. We have tried to convey some of our knowledge, in a simple but scientifically correct language. This compromise is sometimes difficult to achieve. Hence, we have included in each chapter text boxes that explain the less common concepts and also a glossary at the end of the book. Other scientists named in this book, to whom the editors and authors are grateful, have reviewed the chapters and illustrated some annexes. It is our hope that this book may contribute to the dissemination of the scientific knowledge, which is a common objective of the University of Algarve and the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA: http://www.cima.ualg.pt/). Editors 9 Preface Miguel Marques Economist, Specialist in Marine Affairs This book entitled "RIA FORMOSA. Challenges of a coastal lagoon in a changing environment" is an astonishing exercise of disclosing the main challenges of Ria Formosa, a vital lagoon for the Algarve Region and for Portugal as a whole. Coastal interface areas between sea and land are very important, rich, sensitive and extremely dynamic areas. There are multiple and complex changes that, either by nature or by human action, occur in coastal zones, from erosion to silting phenomena, from changes in currents to floods ... This lagoon system, protected by barrier-islands with dunes, is the support of relevant economic activities. Apparently, these barrier-islands were born in the sea and are in permanent movement, towards the continent. The movement is visible, within a decade, there are areas of sand that are decreasing dangerously and others to gain more sand. The example of the Ria Formosa reminds us of the need for any planning of activities, industrial or non- industrial,

Publicações da Associação Portuguesa de Geomorfólogos, Volume V, APGeom, Lisboa, 2007, p. 221-233. Análise das características gerais e do valor intrínseco da geomorfologia das áreas protegidas de Portugal Continental. General characteristics and value of geomorphology in protected areas of Mainland Portugal.

UNIVERSITY OF WALES, BANGOR I, - THE WATER QUALITY OF THE RIA FORMOSA LAGOON, PORTUGAL A DISSERTATION SUBNUTTED TO THE SCHOOL OF OCEAN SCIENCES IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY SCHOOL OF OCEAN SCIENCES BY i PAGE/PAGES EXCLUDED ýUNDER INSTRUCTION FRýOM UNIVERSITY SUNCqARY The Ria Formosa is a lagoon on the South coast of the Algarve, Portugal and insulatesSS km of the coastlinefrom the full impact of the Atlantic. A review of the lagoon considersits geomorphology, sedimentology, hydrography, water quality and ecology. The Ria Formosais identified as an important regional and national resource with respect to recreation, tourism, fishing, aquaculture, shipping and salt extraction. Ma*or regional developmentsin the form of spreadingurbanisation and intensified agriculture, together with rising numbersin both the resident population and the annualtourist influx, pose an ever increasingstress upon the lagoon system, particularly with respectto water quality. The region contiguous to the lagoon is devoid of heavyindustries and the review concludesthat the greatestthreat to sustaineddevelopment of the lagoon resourcesis a progressivedeterioration of water quality promoted by ever increasingdischarges of nutrient and organic rich sewage effluent. In consequence, this study of the water quality in the Ria Formosa focuses upon the spatial and temporal variability in the nutrient and dissolvedoxygen fields. Hydrographic, nutrient and dissolvedoxygen data captured during three separate sampfingprogrammes are presentedand discussed. The first programmeaddressed the variability in the lagoon as a whole. From June 1987 to May 1988 hydrographic, nutrient and dissolvedoxygen data were collected at monthly intervals from sixteensampling stations distributed through the lagoon. All sampling eventswere coincidentwith high and low water on neap tides.

BIOMARES project LIFE06/NAT/P/000192 Non-technical report nº1 Alexandra Cunha Centre for Marine Sciences Faro February 2008 1. The Biomares project The “Luiz Saldanha” Marine Park is the only marine park in Portugal. Located along the south coast of the Setúbal Peninsula, between the Arrábida mountain range and the north part of Cabo Espichel, it stretches over 38 Km of rocky and cliffy coastline between the Figueirinha and Foz beaches. There are numerous sheltered bays with sand or pebble bottoms and includes important habitats concerning the Habitat Directive (the Marine Park is included in the Arrábida-Espichel Site) – Sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time – Reefs and Submerged or partially submerged sea caves. The park houses more than one thousand species of marine flora and fauna. Figure 1. Portinho da Arrábida Bay at the Arrábida Marine Park. 2 2. Threats to conservation in the Arrábida marine park. The main problems that affected biodiversity in this coast were a high fishing effort, use of destructive fishing gears such as the Portuguese clam dredge (ganchorra), use of scuba diving gear to collect bivalves and intensification of recreative fishing and nautical recreational activities. Unregulated anchoring with anchors, grapnels and mooring lines and cables dragging over the bottom, rooted up marine vegetation, destroying animals fixed to the seafloor, altering the nature of the sediments and affecting associated fauna and destroying communities growing on rocks and reefs. Figure 2. Maps showing seagrass meadow distribution area between 1983 e 2003 (Source ISPA, 2006). 3 3. The BIOMARES project The aim of this project is to restore and manage the biodiversity of the Arrábida Marine Park, conciliating economic activities related to fisheries and recreation with environmental protection.

Fort Lauderdale (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. ~.~ A field experiment was carried at Culatra Beach in Algarve (Southern Portugal) to determine longshore transport ~ ~ 7.J rates and sand mixing depth on a steep (slope 0.11) meso-tidal beach. The experiment was undertaken over one and -. b--- a half tidal cycles using sand tracers in conjunction with wave and current monitoring. Variation of mean significant wave height during the experiment was limited (0.34-0.37 m) with mean zero-up crossing periods of 5.1-5.8 sec. Mean longshore current velocities in the breaker zone reached a peak in the second tide (0.28 m sec 1), while they were one order of magnitude smaller during the first (0.02 m sec 1) and third tide (0.04 m sec 1). The increase in current speed was due to a moderate wind that was blowing along shore during the second tide.
