Hastings College Football 2013 Position Breakdown with quotes from Head Coach Tony Harper

Quarterback Matt Overmiller (Jr. 6-3, 190, Hastings, Neb.) returns after seeing limited action during his first two years. “Matt has been in our system for two years now, he had a solid spring, and we look for him to improve during fall camp as well as during the season. We need more consistency from this position and understanding of the game situation.” A number of newcomers will be in camp expecting to compete and adding depth.

Running Back “After graduating Keenen Ballage and Tyler Mertens, this will be a young group, but a group we are very excited about.” Sean Robnett (So. 5-10, 180, Broomfield, Colo.) and Darvonte Knight (So. 5-7, 140, Oklahoma City, Okla.) saw time at tailback and Caleb Kuhfahl (Jr. 5-9, 185, Wahoo, Neb.) returns with experience at fullback. Look for newcomers Jake Fowler (Fr. 5-10, 185, Hastings, Neb.), Ray Bars (Fr. 5-10, 190, Ft. Worth, Texas) and Ramiro Flores (Fr. 5-10, 185, San Bernardino, Calif.) to compete at tailback and Trevor Birdzell (Fr. 5-8, 185, Lincoln, Neb.) at fullback.

Receiver This group returns a good deal of experience. Returners include Trevor Bohn (Jr. 6-0, 185, Bennington, Neb.), Clayton Dean (Sr. 5-10, 160, Lincoln, Neb.) and Nate Arlt (Jr. 5-9, 185, Hastings, Neb.) who is coming off of a redshirt season. Jaden Boudle (Fr. 6-0, 175, Ft. Calhoun, Neb.) and Malik Jones (Fr. 5-10, 165, Ft. Worth, Texas) are two young receivers expected to compete, as well as Matt Kissinger (So. 6-1, 175, Hastings, Neb.) who is also coming off a redshirt year. “There will be a lot of expectations on this group to take pressure off of a first year starter at QB.”

Offensive Line Four of five starters return up front for the most experienced position on the offense. All-Conference tackle Tanner Paxton (Jr. 6-5, 280, Lincoln, Neb.), Josh Watchorn (Sr. 6-0, 290, Ponca, Neb.), Tyler Mogilefsky (Sr. 6-1, 270, Ft. Collins, Colo.) and Landon Arnold (So. 5-11, 275, Omaha, Neb.) return as starters, while Steven Dunham (So. 6-2, 260, Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Tyler Schuster (So. 6-2, 275, Omaha, Neb.) saw plenty of playing time. At tight end, Jordan Wallman (Jr. 6-3, 215, Beatrice, Neb.) and Luke Ruhlman (Sr. 6-6, 235, Martelle, Neb.) also return, both with starting experience. “These returners, combined with a good group of newcomers, should make this unit the foundation of our offense.”

Defensive Line Jordan Consbruck (Jr. 6-5, 245, Juniata, Neb.), Casey Molifua (Jr. 6-1, 260, Lincoln, Neb.), Chad Hartman (Jr. 6-2, 285, Gibbon, Neb.) and Torrey Warren (Sr. 5-10, 260, Norfolk, Neb.), along with Darren Colquitt (So. 5-11, 255, Oklahoma City, Okla.), Jacob Claeys (Sr. 6-4, 245, Omaha, Neb.) and Joe Taulaki (Sr. 6-1, 245, Riverside, Calif.), are all returners expected to lead the way up front defensively. Taylor Mendenhall (Fr. 6-5, 245, Omaha, Neb.) and Zach Medeiros (Fr. 6-1, 230, Edmond, Okla.) are two newcomers expected to compete in camp. “We expect this unit to do a better job of maintaining the line of scrimmage and taking the edge. Because of how we rotate, we have a lot of experience with this group and we expect more productivity.”

Linebacker This will also be an experienced group with Braulio Castillo (Sr. 5-11, 215, Columbus, Neb.), Jeremiah Reed (So. 6-1, 215, Oklahoma City, Okla.), Jake Stevens (Sr. 6-1, 200, Fordyce, Neb.), Quincy Johnson (Jr. 5-9, 220, Oklahoma City, Okla.), Colton Mueller (Sr. 6-1, 220, Omaha, Neb.), Jacob Jensen (Jr. 6-3, 220, Overton, Neb.), Erik Wylie (Jr. 5-11, 200, Eagle, Idaho) and Ben Wegener (Sr. 5-11, 200, Grant, Colo.) all having started at some point in 2012. With a handful of quality recruits, competition will be extremely high at this position. “The linebacker position at Hastings College has historically been the heart of the bronco defense. Last year we didn’t uphold that tradition. We’re confident that this group will get us back to that standard.”

Secondary Three of four starters return in Garrett Griffeth (Sr. 6-1, 180, Golden, Colo.), Alex Gildon (So. 6-2, 175, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Tyler Harris (Sr. 5-8, 180, Omaha, Neb.) Also returning is Kenese Io (So. 5-9, 175, , Colo.) who is expected to take over the safety position, and cornerback back Wyatt Kipp (So. 5-11, 160, Arapahoe, Neb.) “We must be more consistent with our pattern reads and understanding the game-like situations that we are in. This position showed a lot improvement during the spring.”

Special Teams During spring ball, Owain Hickey (Jr. 5-9, 165, Evergreen, Colo.) emerged as the front runner at placekicker and punter. Newcomers Brandon Bachle (Fr. 5-10, 150, Grand Island, Neb.) and Dakota Baumgartner (Fr. 5-9, 170, McCook, Neb.) also look to compete. Long-snappers Casey Molifua, Nick Arauza (Sr. 6-1, 290, Omaha, Neb.) and Jordan Consbruck also return. All Conference return specialist Sean Robnett also returns, but will face stiff competition from multiple newcomers. “Too many times last year, this unit put us in tough situations. The expectation this year is to be simpler and more sound in order to dictate field position.”

2013 Season Outlook

After back to back 6-4 seasons, coach Tony Harper and the Broncos are looking to take the next step towards competing against the best the GPAC has to offer. After starting the season 6-0 and climbing in to the national rankings in 2012, a four game skid to end the season has the Broncos focusing on finishing the task at hand.

Offensive Outlook - Heading into the third season with in the Pistol Pro system, the Broncos will be looking for more production and consistency. “I’m excited with how Coach Joe Holtzclaw as the offensive coordinator has expanded this offense year after year,” Harper said. “The offensive line led by Tanner Paxton (Jr. OL, 6-5, 280, Lincoln, NE), Tyler Mogilefsky (Sr. OL, 6-1, 270, Ft. Collins, Colo.) and Josh Watchorn (Sr. 5-11, OL, 265, Ponca, Neb.) will be the anchors of this group heading into camp.” Nate Arlt (Jr. WR, 5-9, 185, Hastings, NE), Austin Curlee (So. WR, 6-2, 180, Round Rock, TX) and Trevor Bohn (Jr. WR, 6-0, 185, Bennington, NE) lead the way at receiver and with their experience we will look for them to be leaders on and off the field. “After graduating all three starters in the back field,” Harper said. “Preseason camp will be vital in identifying our backfield.” Matt Overmiller (Jr. QB, 6-5, 195, Hastings, NE), Sean Robnett (So. WR, 5-10, 165, Broomfield, Colo.), Darvonte Knight (So. FB, 5-7, 140, Oklahoma City, OK) and Caleb Kuhfahl (So. FB, 5-9, 180, Wahoo, NE) all have playing experience but will be pushed by the incoming class. As a team, we need to become better on our completion percentage and more consistent on our third down conversions.

Defensive Outlook - Defensively we welcome new coach Adam Long as the defensive coordinator. “We return nine of 11 starters off of a team that struggled mightily at times last season,” Harper said. “But we are excited for the experience that returns.” Two all-conference performers in Alex Gildon (So. DB, 6-2, 175, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Garrett Griffeth (Sr. DB, 6-1, 180, Golden, Colo.) return in the secondary along with a multitude of linebackers that saw extensive playing time a year ago. “The back eight must focus on not only their pass drops but their run fits as we struggled with this at times last season,” Harper said. “Up front we must do a better job of maintaining the line of scrimmage and pushing the edge.” Jordan Consbruck (Jr. DL, 6-5, 245, Juniata, NE), Casey Molifua (Jr. DL, 6-1, 260, Lincoln, NE) and Chad Hartman (Jr. DL, 6-2, 285, Gibbon, NE) are all returning starters who are expected to play major roles this year.

Special Teams Outlook - “Our special teams were very inconsistent last year and this needs to be emphasized throughout the season.” Owain Hickey (Jr. K, 5-9, 165, Evergreen, Colo.) returns and he will compete against Dakota Bumgardner and Brandon Bachle for kicking duties.
