MORE THAN $2.5 MILLION RAISED IN HONOUR OF HAZEL MCCALLION’S MILESTONE 100TH BIRTHDAY Proceeds of commemorative photo book to support redevelopment of Hospital.

Mississauga, On (February 8, 2021) – With her milestone 100th birthday just days away on February 14, Hazel McCallion, Mississauga’s legendary, longest-serving , and Foundation are pleased to announce that more than $2.5 million dollars have been raised in support of her commemorative photo book “Hazel McCallion: A Century of Accomplishment.”

“I’m just a few days away from my 100th birthday, but with the pandemic we needed a safer way to celebrate,” said McCallion. “This book is full of photos and memories of all the chapters of my life, including the many business and community leaders who helped build this great city. COVID-19 has reinforced the importance of investing in our hospitals, so that they can continue to provide high quality care for generations to come. I’m proud to support Trillium Health Partners with this fundraising initiative.”

As Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel understood the importance of good health and the need to invest in hospitals to provide quality care for the people of her city. She led the drive to build in 1976, now part of THP. As an unwavering champion of health care and Trillium Health Partners’ Honorary Guardian, proceeds of the book will support a cause close to Hazel’s heart, the redevelopment of .

THP is the largest community academic hospital in , with over 1.75 million patient visits last year. Over the next 20 years, it will see more growth in demand for services than any hospital in Ontario. Over the past year, THP has played a key role in fighting COVID-19, caring for some of the highest volumes of patients with the virus in the province, but has been challenged by the aging infrastructure at Mississauga Hospital.

The photo book recounts McCallion’s childhood in Port Daniel on the Gaspé coast of , where she enjoyed sports and the outdoors, developing a lifelong love of hockey – including a stint playing professional hockey, while included losing her front teeth. She began her career in an engineering company, before moving to to open a new branch. You’ll read about her foray as one of the first women to enter local politics, which led to her election as Mayor of Streetsville from 1970-1973 and then mayor of Mississauga in 1978. Upon becoming mayor, she was tested almost immediately by the train derailment that cemented her reputation as a decisive leader in what became known as the Mississauga Miracle. Hazel retired in 2014, and recounts her many adventures and friendships over the decades. To this day she remains incredibly busy and engaged in the city, its people and future.

“The huge success to date of this initiative reflects the love we all feel for Hazel, a living legend who built what is one of the most successful cities in Canada. She has long been a powerful advocate for Trillium Health Partners, and we are so grateful she has chosen her birthday to support the redevelopment and expansion of Mississauga Hospital,” said Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of THP Foundation. “It’s a remarkable book about a remarkable person for a great cause.”

Only 2,500 copies of the book have been printed, with a limited amount remaining for purchase.
