As we know, cities have been the centres of major civilizations all through the history of mankind, whether in the Mohenjo-daro towns, in Mesopotamian citadels, in the Aztec city palaces or in Classical Roman and Greek republics. In the modern era too, cities have been the cradles of economic, political and cultural evolution of human society in many ways. As cities become recognised as the engines of economic growth, their significance for the peace and progress of every nation has become more and more evident. While in many western nations, almost 60 to 80% of the population lives in cities and towns, India too, has seen a rapid growth in urbanization fuelled by growth in the industrial and service sectors along with large scale migration across and within states. At the same time, Indian cities face urgent challenges to meet the growing needs of infrastructure and services that would ensure an acceptable (and in some cases desirable) standard of living and quality of life. The challenges are not only confined to providing quality and equitable accessibility of municipal services, but also relate to the resources required for ensuring sustained availability of these services that are critical to ensure safe, healthy and viable urban life. -

Revenues at Rs. 4562.79 crores as compared to Rs. 3930.44 crores in the previous year. Profit After Tax (PAT) for the year 2005-2006 touched Rs. 610.54 crores, growth of 10.7% over previous year. The Strategic Electronics Division registered an operating revenue of Rs. 38.18 crores. North Delhi Power Limited has recorded revenues of Rs. 1840.55 crores and PAT of Rs. 112.53 crores. INTRODUCTION With able guidance and leadership of our Chairman Dr. C. Rangarajan and other Board of Governors of Madras School of Economics (MSE), MSE completes its 21 years as on September 23, 2014. During these 21 years, MSE reached many mile stones and emerged as a leading centre of higher learning in Economics. It is the only center in the country offering five specialized Masters Courses in Economics namely M.Sc. General Economics, M.Sc. Financial Economics, M.Sc. Applied Quantitative Finance, M.Sc. Environmental Economics and M.Sc. Actuarial Economics. It also offers a 5 year Integrated M.Sc. Programme in Economics in collaboration with Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN). It has been affiliated with University of Madras and Central University of Tamil Nadu for Ph.D. programme. So far twelve Ph.Ds. and 640 M.Sc. students have been awarded. Currently six students are pursuing Ph.D. degree. The core areas of research of MSE are: Macro Econometric Modeling, Public Finance, Trade and Environment, Corporate Finance, Development, Insurance and Industrial Economics. MSE has been conducting research projects sponsored by leading national and international agencies. It has successfully completed more than 110 projects and currently undertakes more than 20 projects. -
