3 February 2018 to 27 January 2019, The Porsche Effect at the Petersen Automotive Museum

The Petersen Automotive Museum is developing an exhibit called The Porsche Effect that will be on view from February 3, 2018 to January 27, 2019. We have been working alongside Porsche Cars North America and have recently connected with PCA.

PCA and the larger extended family of Porsche owners and enthusiasts will be explored in the exhibit’s Extended Family section which will include a Club Coupe and artifacts from the PCA archive. We were hoping that you could help us learn more about Zone 8’s history and determine additional ways that we can collaborate with the local Porsche community.

29 June-2 July 2018, 968 West Coast Gathering

There will be a gathering of 968 owners this summer in Sonora, CA, June 29th to July 2nd. Sonora is located on historic CA Highway 49, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains! Think Winding Mountain Roads!

In the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills, in the heart of California’s “Gold Country” lies Sonora, named after the miners from Sonora Mexico who settled the City in 1848. Known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines”, Sonora still holds onto its historic downtown charm while thriving as the commercial, government and cultural center for the region. This should be a great base for scenic drives, social time with fellow 968’ers and exploring the local region!

For those who made the 968 Gathering in S. Lake Tahoe, this is a little southwest of that and we will have an opportunity to enjoy some of the same styles of roads and scenery! Stops are being planned at several nearby historical venues.

The base hotel is the Sonoran Inn (http://www.thesonorainn.com/) with discount rates of between $135-$145 per night; depending on room type. There are other higher-priced hotels/inns/B&Bs and some lower-priced lodging to suit all pocketbooks and tastes. One caution, there are no first floor rooms at the hotel and the elevator is under repair and may not be operational. If this is a concern, they have an adjacent property with first floor rooms that you can book.

Make your reservations no later than May 29th to check-in on Friday, June 29th and check-out on Monday, July 2nd

The block of rooms will be released after May 29th.

Ask for the “Porsche Club 968” special rates. Reservations should be direct to the hotel at 209-532-2400

The members of the Wild Rose Region and the Treffen North America staff invite you to attend Treffen Banff in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies within Banff National Park over September 12 – 15, 2018.

The headquarters hotel for this event is the historic Fairmont Banff Springs, a landmark in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta. Built during the 19th century as one of Canada’s grand railway hotels, the Fairmont Banff Springs is known as Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies” and has been providing legendary hospitality to their guests for more than 125 years.

The primary reason for touring this fairytale Canadian oasis is the awe-inspiring mountain vistas and scenic drives throughout Banff National Park. Driving routes like the world-famous Icefields Parkway offer access to dizzying mountains, hanging lakes and glaciers. And be sure to watch for elusive wildlife along the way as you never know when a curious elk might wander onto the road.

Registration opens Wednesday, 13 June 2018.

The G-Drive Racing LMP2 team has been stripped of its class victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours for the use of an illegal device to speed up its pitstops.

G-Drive’s TDS Racing-run #26 Oreca driven by Roman Rusinov, Jean-Eric Vergne and Andrea Pizzitola romped to class honours in the French classic, enjoying a faultless run to win by two laps.

However, it was found subsequently by the technical delegates that the Russian outfit had fitted an illegal part to its refuelling rig in order that handed it a significant advantage, and was excluded from the results.

It means the #36 Signatech Alpine Oreca of Nicolas Lapierre, Andre Negrao and Pierre Thiriet inherits victory, with the #39 Graff-SO24 entry shared by Vincent Capillaire, Jonathan Hirschi and Tristan Gommendy moving up to second.

G-Drive has confirmed its intention to appeal its disqualification.

A stewards’ bulletin issued on Monday evening read: “The technical delegates issued a report to the Stewards that “an additional machined part not featuring in the drawing is inserted into the flow restrictor, changing the wetted restrictor surface described by the regulatory drawing.

“The Technical Delegates provided the Stewards with photos of the restrictor, the referenced part and its assembly to the “dead man valve”.

“The contested part is a machined part that extends from the dead man valve and inserts inside the cone of the Flow Restrictor.

“The Technical Delegates stated to the Stewards that they started their investigation of the competitor’s refuelling system following the race when they noted the competitor was able to refuel significantly faster than any of their competitors.”

The offence also applies to the #28 TDS Racing Oreca that narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the hands of Loic Duval, Matthieu Vaxiviere and Francois Perrodo.

Consequently, ’ #32 Ligier of , Will Owen and Hugo de Sadeleer is promoted to the final place on the LMP2 class podium.

Porsche buys 10-percent stake in electric supercar maker Rimac

From Motor Authority, by Sean Szymkowski, Jun 20, 2018

Rimac C_Two

Porsche has big plans to be a leader in the electric-car segment, and it has just inked a new partnership with a familiar company to bolster its position. The German sports car and luxury vehicle maker announced on Wednesday that it's purchased a 10-percent stake in the Croatian firm Rimac Automobili.

“We feel that Rimac’s ideas and approaches are extremely promising, which is why we hope to enter into close collaboration with the company in the form of a development partnership,” said Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of the executive board and member of the executive board for finance and IT at Porsche.

Rimac is best known for its battery-electric supercars, the Concept_One and C_Two, but the firm also produces numerous electric-car components. Porsche's main focus with the investment will be on high- voltage battery technology and electric powertrains.

Rimac envisions a future in which the Croatian company supplies essential parts for future electric cars. "This partnership now is an important step for Rimac on our way to become a component and system

sgvr.pca.org 49 of 62 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 26 June 2018 supplier of choice for the industry in electrification, connectivity and the exciting field of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems”, said Rimac’s CEO Mate Rimac, in a statement.

Rimac's C_Two, the follow-up to the Concept_One, which Richard Hammond infamously crashed, features the company's latest technology. A 120-kwh battery pack provides enough juice to power four electric motors. In turn, 1,914 horsepower and 1,700 pound-feet of torque are on tap. The motors also provide all-wheel drive and torque vectoring.

The specs are enough to take the electric supercar from 0-60 mph in 1.85 seconds and the quarter-mile comes and goes in 9.1 seconds. When drivers aren't mashing the throttle, the C_Two will go 400 miles on a charge, per the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Porsche teaches us how to pronounce Taycan

At Porsche, the Taycan, formerly the Mission E, will be the first vehicle to usher in the brand's electric- car portfolio. The sedan will duke it out directly with the Tesla Model S and should boast a range of around 300 miles on the NEDC, or about 240 miles in the U.S. Performance specs aren't available, but Porsche has said the car should sprint to 60 mph in well under 3.5 seconds.

In the future, perhaps Rimac will have something to say about future electric Porsches.

Hyun Jeong Choi: Officer’s flawed testimony leads to mistrial in fatal pot DUI

From Fox 5, by City News Service, 3:44 PM, JUNE 21, 2018

March 27, 2016

SAN DIEGO — An issue with an officer’s testimony prompted a judge to declare a mistrial Thursday in the case of a woman accused of causing a marijuana-related collision near Scripps Ranch that killed a passenger in another car.

A new trial date is expected to be set Monday.

Hyun Jeong Choi, 36, is charged with second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI with drugs in the March 27, 2016, crash that killed 43-year-old Amanda Walzer and left her fiance, 49-year- old Jon Warshawsky, with a traumatic brain injury.

During testimony in the trial’s first day Wednesday, an officer implied that he saw Choi in her vehicle after the accident fumbling with a marijuana pipe, trying to hide it.

That information was not in any report and contradicted his partner’s testimony that preceded him, according to defense attorney Stephen Cline.

RELATED STORY: Driver in fatal pot DUI had prior warnings, prosecutor says

When pressed, the officer claimed he wrote a report on the incident but that it had been “lost” and was not in any system maintained by the San Diego Police Department.

Superior Court Judge Lorna Alksne ordered prosecutor Andrew Aguilar to investigate the matter, and he told the court there was no record of any such report.

Alksne ordered a mistrial rather than strike the officer’s testimony out of concern the jury would not be able to put it out of their minds, Cline said.

In his opening statement Wednesday, Aguilar told the jury that Choi pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in 2013 and was given several warnings about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“She knew better,” the prosecutor told the jury.

RELATED STORY: Woman held on $3M bail in fatal Porsche crash

Aguilar said that just before the fatal collision, Choi had smoked marijuana she purchased at a nearby dispensary.

An open bag of marijuana and a freshly used marijuana pipe were found in the defendant’s vehicle after the crash, the prosecutor said.

After she was released from the hospital, Choi admitted she “tried to fight it” and “tried to get home” after smoking the marijuana she had just bought.

Cline told the jury that Choi made a “naive and negligent mistake” by purchasing what she thought was the same kind of medical marijuana she had used before to calm her social anxiety.

RELATED STORY: $3M bail set for DUI suspect in fatal crash

When Choi returned from traveling overseas, her usual dispensary was gone and she purchased what she thought was the same type of marijuana that had helped her before from a dispensary in the Miramar area, Cline said.

The attorney said there were no warnings about the strength and potency of the marijuana, which had an immediate impact on Choi.

“She had no idea what she left that store with,” her attorney said. “She was impaired. Catastrophically impaired.”

Cline said Choi was not guilty of murder.

Witness Regis Kodzi testified that he and his wife were traveling on Pomerado Road behind Warshawsky’s vintage 1956 Porsche when Choi’s Toyota Corolla crossed a center divide and hit the Porsche head-on about 5:30 p.m.

Trial on murder charge opens for driver who smoked pot before fatal crash

Note: this story appears to have been written before the judge declared a mistrial.

From San Diego Union Tribune, by Pauline Repard • Contact Reporter, 20 June 2018 4:35 PM

The day before Easter in 2016, Jon Warshawsky had lunch in La Jolla with his girlfriend, Amanda Walzer.

The next thing he remembers, he testified Wednesday, is waking up almost two months later in a La Mesa rehabilitation clinic. He could barely move his head or limbs.

He can’t recall that Easter Sunday, on March 27, when a woman who had been smoking marijuana crashed her car head on into his vintage Porsche, disabling him and killing Walzer.

“No, I don’t have any memory of that,” Warshawsky said in San Diego Superior Court, where he used an electric wheelchair, then a walker, to make his way slowly to the witness stand.

He was one of the first witnesses called in the trial of Hyun Jeong Choi, 36, who faces charges of second- degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and allegations of gross bodily injury and multiple victims related to the fatal crash.

Choi, who already had one DUI conviction, understood that she shouldn’t get behind the wheel of a car while impaired, a prosecutor said.

“She knew better,” Deputy District Attorney Andrew Aguilar told jurors in his opening trial statements.

“The defendant was high on marijuana, knew she was high on marijuana, knew that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was dangerous, yet she willingly chose to try to drive home,” Aguilar said.

sgvr.pca.org 55 of 62 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 26 June 2018

He said Choi pleaded guilty to a 2012 DUI with a blood-alcohol content of .19 percent, well over twice the legal limit for drivers in California. The state has no laws setting a legal level for marijuana’s active ingredient, THC.

Choi’s attorney, Stephen Cline, told jurors that his client, who suffers from an anxiety disorder, had never before smoked the particular type of highly potent medical marijuanashe bought about half an hour before the collision.

The drug “almost instantly kicked in” and Choi lost control of her arms and legs, Cline said.

“She was catastrophically impaired,” Cline acknowledged. “The issue is whether she is guilty of murder.”

The prosecutor, Aguilar, said Choi went to Mankind Cooperative dispensary in Miramar around 5 p.m. and bought two types of marijuana.

She drove about six miles, stopped to smoke some pot in her car, then continued east on Pomerado Road in Scripps Ranch.

Near Camino Alta, Choi lost control of her Toyota Corolla, swerved over a raised center median and plowed nearly head-on into Warshawsky’s westbound 1956 356A Speedster convertible.

Aguilar said the marijuana pipe in Choi’s car was still warm after the crash and she admitted to San Diego police that she was impaired by pot.

Walzer suffered major head and brain injuries.

Her mother, Marjorie Walzer, of Sherman Oaks, testified that she and her husband learned of their daughter’s crash early the next day, and drove to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

She said her daughter, an English professor at Fullerton College, underwent 11 hours of surgery.

“I thought that maybe with a lot of love and care, she was going to pull through,” her mother said. “After seeing her, we realized that was not the case.”

Her daughter was declared brain dead on March 29.

Warshawsky testified that before the crash, he was healthy and fit, working out in a gym four days a week. After the crash, with extensive rehab, he re-learned how to speak, eat and drink and to walk for short distances. He had surgery in May this year to re-align his damaged right eye.

The trial was to continue Thursday and is expected to conclude late next week.

This Test Shows Why Tesla Autopilot Crashes Keep Happening

From Jalopnik, by Raphael Orlove, 6/13/18 8:15 PM

The first thing that happened when I drove a Tesla on Autopilot was an instant, unsettling feeling of not being comfortable in the car at all, thinking it’s always a moment away from crashing. Slowly, I got used to it and calmed down, just like everyone else I’ve talked to who has used Autopilot. This video from a British testing group shows exactly why that is a problem, and why we’ve seen the kind of Autopilot crashes that have been blowing up in the news.

Thatcham Research

Tesla has issued many warnings and descriptions and lessons explaining what exactly are the limitations of Autopilot, what it can’t do, and how responsibility always falls on a driver who must stay attentive and ready for anything at all times. But anyone who has driven a Tesla on Autopilot knows that how the cars themselves drive doesn’t follow the corporate line. Turn on Autopilot and everything is fine... until it isn’t. As your Tesla seemingly effortlessly follows the car in front of it traffic, it’s easy to sense that absolutely everything’s under control. You feel like, great, you can relax! The future is here. You’re good.

Then out of nowhere, warning! It needs your input. Hands on the wheel. It needs you, and it needs you fast.

This inherent weakness in Autopilot, and to an extent all of the other semi-autonomous systems on the market, came up today in this video from Thatcham Research, which performs tests for auto insurers. They tested a Tesla on Autopilot in pretty much ideal settings, only to watch it crash, as so many other cars on Autopilot have over the past few years.

sgvr.pca.org 58 of 62 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 26 June 2018

The test is pretty simple:

1. A Tesla on Autopilot follows another car ahead of it. 2. The car in front moves out of the way. 3. There’s a stopped car in front of it. 4. The Tesla hits the stopped car.

Thatcham Research took the BBC along for one such demonstration using an inflatable dummy car as a stand in for an actual stopped or disabled car. That’s why both made it out unharmed when the Tesla absolutely plowed the hell into its mock Ford Fiesta shell. [The BBC’s version of the video itself doesn’t want to embed but watch it in full here.]

The BBC described the test itself:

With the Autopilot system switched on, the Model S kept in lane and slowed to a halt when a car it was following encountered standing traffic.

But on a second run the car in front switched lanes at the last moment, and the Tesla was unable to brake in time, running into a stationary vehicle.

“This is an example of what happens when the driver is over-reliant on the system,” says Matthew Avery.

I asked Tesla for comment if there are technical details of Autopilot as to why this kind of crash is possible with the system on, to which a spokesperson responded that the car is not un-crashable:

“Tesla has always been clear that Autopilot doesn’t make the car impervious to all accidents and the issues described by Thatcham won’t be a problem for drivers using Autopilot correctly.”

I also asked Tesla for comment on this notion of “over-reliance on the system,” particularly that everything seems fine until the last moment, when it’s not. Tesla responded that all Tesla users understand that if you don’t pay attention, you’ll crash:

“The feedback that we get from our customers shows that they have a very clear understanding of what Autopilot is, how to properly use it, and what features it consists of. When using Autopilot, drivers are continuously reminded of their responsibility to keep their hands on the wheel and maintain control of the vehicle at all times. This is designed to prevent driver misuse, and is among the strongest driver- misuse safeguards of any kind on the road today.”

The problem is that “what happens when the driver is over-reliant on the system,” as Thatcham Research put it, has been happening a lot in the past few years, and we’re starting to see a bit of a trend with drivers using Autopilot crashing into stationary cars and objects.

There was the Model S that crashed into a firetruck just last month.

There was the other Model S that crashed into a police car that same month.

sgvr.pca.org 59 of 62 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 26 June 2018

There was the fatal Model X crash, striking a concrete median on Autopilot, only a few months before that.

There was Joshua Brown’s fatal crash in 2016, the driver inattentive on Autopilot and the car with a blind spot to a tractor trailer ahead.

And there was 23-year-old Gao Yaning’s fatal crash into the back of a road-sweeping truck while traveling on a highway in China, which his father attests was on Autopilot, something that Tesla has been fighting him over for two years, claiming that it is impossible to determine given the state of the wreck.

With these crashes lining up, it’s clear that these are not rogue incidents of drivers not “using Autopilot correctly.” There’s a problem here and we’ve seen it repeated time and time again, as reporter Ed Niedermeyer described on Twitter:

As Tesla would point out, drivers are warned! They are so warned! And yet we still see these crashes.

Now, it’s impossible to see this as a lone incident over and over and over again, blaming only the driver for individual inattentiveness, particularly because, per a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report in 2016, Tesla knew its drivers would be inattentive behind the wheel of a car on Autopilot.

But it’s also unfair to say that this is all Tesla’s fault. Tesla certainly does warn its drivers and does have safeguards against misuse. Certainly there are more warnings against misuse in a Tesla than in, say, the 1992 Camry on which I learned to drive.

Maybe humans just aren’t cut out to use driver-assistance systems.

Could Tesla be doing more? It has changed how its warnings work before and it could change them again. It could change its cars to be constantly monitoring the eyes of the driver to absolutely maintain assurance of attention, as GM does with Cadillac’s Supercruise (and as Tesla elected not to do).

But once you start getting into the question of whether is Autopilot any less safe than a car that doesn’t have it, how many crashes happen with regular cars, everything starts to get very messy. This is the cross Tesla bears by being the leader in bringing this tech to the public, and something it will be dealing with a lot more as it moves out of relatively low-volume luxury cars and into higher-volume vehicles like the Model 3.

But this is also getting into bigger questions of how much freedom any of us have behind the wheel of any car. I suppose that’s the point of regulation, and I’m glad that the FTC is getting lobbied to look into how Autopilot is marketed and that Autopilot is being technically reviewed and prodded as in tests like these.
