But beyond that, I appreciated the book’s message that the road to happiness is to be true to yourself first.” - The FlyLeaf Review “An extremely adorkable read about being comfortable in your own skin. Get ready to bring out your inner nerd!” - Sara Book Nerd “THE SUMMER I BECAME A NERD is everything you want in an ideal summer; it’s fun and bright, with the perfect mix of romance and nerdiness. You’ll devour this book with as much enthusiasm as the main character devours the latest comic book.” - Alice in Readerland “A total feel good romance with plenty of laughs and smiles, and just the right amount of emotion.” - A Good Addiction “A sweet and fun summer read that turns the tables on the popular guy/nerdy girl scenario and refreshingly features a popular girl who wants to let her nerd flag fly.

Issue 142 AUGUST 2ND, 2021 Is there a reader among us who doesn’t dig ZZ Top? We mourn the passing of Joseph Michael “Dusty” Hill (72), bassist, vocalist and keyboardist for the tres hombres. Blending blues, boogie, bone-crushing rock, born-for-MTV visuals, humor and outrageousness – they once took a passel of live animals on stage as part of their 1976 – 1977 Worldwide Texas Tour – Hill, drummer Frank Beard and guitarist Billy F. Gibbons have scorched stages worldwide. As a friend said, “it’s amazing how just three guys could make that much sound.” Rest in peace, Mr. Hill. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gets inspired by the music of Renaissance composer William Byrd, and understands The Animals. Wayne Robins reviews Native Sons, the superb new album from Los Lobos. Ray Chelstowski interviews The Immediate Family, featuring studio legends Waddy Wachtel, Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel and others, in an exclusive video interview. I offer up more confessions of a record collector. Tom Gibbs finds much to like in some new SACD discs. John Seetoo winds up his coverage of the Audio Engineering Society’s Spring 2021 AES show. Ken Sander travels through an alternate California reality. WL Woodward continues his series on troubadour Tom Waits. Russ Welton interviews cellist Jo Quail, who takes a unique approach to the instrument. In another article, he ponders what's needed for sustaining creativity. Adrian Wu looks at more of his favorite analog recordings. Cliff Chenfeld turns us on to some outstanding new music in his latest Be Here Now column.

General – 2015 Final Report NIST Office of Weights and Measures Address National Institute of Standards and Technology Address to the National Conference on Weights and Measures to Commemorate Their 100th Meeting Philadelphia, Pennsylvania July 21, 2015 Carol Hockert, Chief, NIST, Office of Weights and Measures My goal here today is to give you a brief history of weights and measures and the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM), and to give you a feel for how and why National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and NCWM are so closely intertwined. To set the stage: In 1905, life expectancy was 47 years; 14 % of homes had bathtubs and 8 percent had telephones. There were 8000 cars in the United States and 144 miles of paved road. The speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. California had 1.4 million people; the 21st most populous state. Tallest building – the Eiffel Tower. Average U.S. wage – $0.22 per hour. The American flag had 45 stars – missing Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii. Two of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write. Only 6 % graduated from high school. Most births took place in the home (95 %) February 13, 1904: A letter was sent by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) director to governors of the states proposing a meeting of state sealers. This meeting occurred early in 1905. At the first meeting, Louis Fischer read a paper that gave a brief history of weights and measures in the United States. Of note, he mentioned the following historical actions.

We are interviewing today Lisa Hill-Festa, the former Curator of Collections here at the museum. We are at the museum, Lisa, so this is very nice to have you come back here. It is March 28, 2015. Interviewing is Mari-Ann Kind Jackson and Sarah Peterson. Welcome, Lisa. It’s wonderful to have you here. Lisa Hill-Festa: [0:43] Thank you. It’s like being home again. [Laughter] Mari-Ann: [0:44] Yes. I can well imagine. Would you start by stating your full name, your date of birth, and where you were born, and then share with us what you would like about your life, and specifically about your life at the museum. Lisa: [0:59] Okay. Sounds good. I am Lisa Margo Hill-Festa. I was born on August 16, 1952, or as I tell my students or my former students, 19 [mumbles]. Laughter. But 1952, in Pensacola, Florida. I guess I can start by saying I was a Navy brat. My father was a Naval Commander, and I just want to say a couple words about him. He is no longer with us. He passed away at ninety-three, about three years ago. [1:45] But he had quite a few accomplishments while he was in the Navy. One of which, he commanded the first dirigible, or airship, or blimp, across the Atlantic Ocean.
