Follow Us. Nick Hornby has created a fully realized picture of middle-class morality and hypocrisy which forces the reader to see how far we are from living our ideals. I found myself identifying with Katie, despite her whiny repetitive moments. Ok, so Hornby's a Gooner and his taste in music is not exactly mine, but he sure can write. In order to truly be good, you will have to consider what 'goodness' means to you. Oh my! Deutsch: Ein guter Mensch sein. He challenges the entire family to not just give lip-service to their progressive philosophy but to actually walk the walk, by giving away some of their possessions, offering their home as shelter to homeless waifs, and encouraging the family to right their past wrongs. I decided a few years ago that it doesn't matter if someone is ultra rude, condescending, or worse. -

31 x ANDREW TATE Nick Hornby's Melancholy Comedy [M]elancholy animals that we are, human beings are also the most cheerful. We smile and find ourselves ridiculous. Our wretchedness is our greatness. (Critchley 2002, 111) Four strangers, each depressed enough to seek a swift, violent end to their lives, fortu- itously meet on New Year's eve on the roof of a north London tower block callously nicknamed Toppers' House, a dwelling notorious for its high-rise suicides. This colli- sion of disparate (and desperate) individuals, united only by their shared desire to die, might be either the starting point of a very sick joke or the culmination of poignant melodrama. Yet Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down (2005a) does not quite belong to the capacious family of genres labeled "tragic" nor is it a taboo-transgressing satire about the contingencies of precarious mental health. Hornby's fourth novel is a story of loss, anomie, isolation, loneliness, disappointment, failure, and disastrous ethical choices – all signifiers of tragedy, to be sure – but it is also, despite the bleak subject matter, full of laughter, diffident wit, chronic non-self-awareness, farce, incongruous friendships, ill-advised holidays with virtual strangers, awkward family reunions, creative swearing and other tropes of comic fiction. Martin, a shamed former breakfast television presenter, and the only member of this unlikely quartet of thwarted suicidal narrators to be recognized by his new ac- quaintances, reflects on the odd (at least temporarily) salvific outcome of that even- ing: "I'm not sitting here now because I suddenly saw sense. -

Summer Reading Assignment Literature for College Mrs. Herman You will be expected to complete two (2) books in advance of the beginning of this course. The first is Thomas Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, a book for which the complete text can be downloaded from the internet. (If the link does not work, Google “How to Read Literature Like a Professor PDF” and you should be able to find it easily.) The on-line text is 154 pages, so you will want to duplex your copy and make sure you have plenty of ink. Questions for each chapter follow in this handout to guide your thinking for each chapter. Reading this book before your novel will help you to interpret your novel more effectively. Secondly, you must read a novel (fiction) by a British author from the 20th or the 21st century. While you may generally choose whatever you like, there are a few authors and works I prefer you do not read. Do not read J. K. Rowling, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkein, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1984 by George Orwell, or The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. We will be reading the last three in class and the other authors, while I know them to be favorites of many students, are ones many of you have already read. -
