While some of the details have changed, the core ideals of Arkansas Governor’s School have stayed the same. We have added the theme of “Technology: Past, Present, and Future” to explore how technology has shaped our society’s development and explore possible future developments. We have had several speakers and films which addressed what it means to be human in an increasingly technological world. Despite the changes, we have kept the traditional focus on conceptual, personal, and social development. Your classes and small groups have challenged you to think critically and work collaboratively. We hope this experience has better equipped you to be successful in the future. You have made a lasting impact on all of us and we hope we have been successful in making an impact on you. Cherish the friendships you have developed at AGS. After you leave, keep in contact with your fellow participants and your faculty. We look forward to seeing what you accomplish. This community of scholars will be a great resource for you in the coming years. You are also a great resource for us. Share your experience with others. Encourage the younger students in your school to apply to AGS. Apply to become a Resident Assistant. Come be a speaker at a future AGS. At the very least, come back next summer for Alumni Day. You are now part of the AGS family and there are many ways you can contribute. Thank you for making the first AGS at ATU a success! AGS is about the classes, speakers, movies, activities and special events, but to me, it is more about the students and what they bring to each other and to this community as a whole. Please remember the faculty and speakers and their generosity in sharing what they know. Remember what you studied and the places you visited. Also remember the choices you made when grades and certificates did not matter and your phone wasn’t always in your pocket. Remember Peggy! But most of all, please remember the people you met and the friends you made. It has been an honor and joy to serve as your co-director for AGS. I wish you the very best as you move on to your next exciting life adventure. Sincerely, Jeff Woods, Co-Director Arkansas Governor’s School 2 Area I Rising seniors in high school today are essentially cyborgs. Their smart phones give them almost immediate access to the world’s information and disinformation. They also allow them to connect to each other and people all over the world in real time at the push of a few buttons. The technology theme at AGS is less a vehicle to teach technical skills - though some of that will occur - than a prism through which AGS students can collaboratively examine what it means to be human. Technology - smart phones, personal computers, artificial intelligence, genetic modification, biomedical augmentation, etc. - increasingly frames our students’ daily communication, as well as their art, economics, politics, psychology, and ethics. As Henry Adams did at the turn of the twentieth century, AGS students will ask what it is to grapple with their humanity amidst the technological whirligig of the turn of the early twenty-first century.     Arkansas Business Educator Fall 2007 The official publication of the Arkansas Business Education Association Letter From The President Dear Arkansas Business Educators Fall is here again and with it comes back to school, football games, and the beauty of the changing leaves. To me fall also means “out with the old” as the earth prepares for the dormancy of winter, so that spring will bring “in with the new”. Business education is truly an “out with the old, in with the new” career. Once we think we have it all figured out…it changes. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to commend you – the Business Educators of Arkansas. I realize how much time and effort you all put into staying abreast of the latest software, the latest equipment, and the latest teaching techniques. Your dedication to your students is amazing! Once again you made our ABEA Conference this July a huge success – thanks to all of you for your attendance. I hope you are all making plans to attend the SBEA Conference in Little Rock this October. With Kathy Woodcock serving as SBEA president and with the conference being held in our home state it provides us a great opportunity to let others know what we already know…Arkansas business educators are the best! Thank you so much for allowing me to serve as your 2007­2008 ABEA President. If I or any board member can be of assistance to you this year, please do not hesitate to call on us.     Citizens In St.Francis County at the End of the 19th Century Paul V.Isbell, Feb.27,2012 Abel, James Henry, Sr.:Page 70-James H.Abel Sr., son of O.S.Abel, was born in 1878 in Old Town, Phillips Co., Arkansas, and moved to Palestine with his father in 1886, attended the Palestine Public Schools and then served as foreman of several large saw mills in the area before entering into the well-drilling business when his father, Obediah Silas Abel, died in 1910. Mr.Abel has seven children, five by a previous marriage to Mrs.Lucy Wilkerson, who died in 1920, and two by his present wife, Miss Jesse W.Cooper of Palestine. For relaxation he loves to fish. Abel, Obediah Silas-Amid pioneer surroundings in the latter part of the nineteenth century when Forrest City was a small struggling community of a little over 500 hardy souls with the Bank of Eastern Arkansas only one year old, the late O.S.Abel, an early Arkansas settler, founded his well contracting business which today is being proudly continued by his son and his grandson, James H.Abel Sr. and James H.Abel Jr., as one of the oldest firms in St.Francis County. The business of well and house-moving contractors dates back to 1887 when their sturdy pioneer ancestor started bringing in his first well in this rich agricultural community. The last O.S.Abel came to Old Town, Ark., in Phillips County, in 1850 from Mississippi and in 1886 moved to Palestine. His father had moved from South Carolina to Mississippi, a few years after the Revolutionary War.
