1 The Republic of Pemberley “A Haven for Jane Austen Addicts” A Study of a Virtual Community Author: Claudia Tenenblat Advisor: Karin Becker JMK - Department of Journalism, Media and Communication Masters Programme in Media and Communication Studies May 2011 2 Abstract The Internet is revolutionizing human communication. With it, new ways of exchanging information are created, enabling intimacy even without significant physical proximity. This thesis seeks to examine one Internet community, “ The Republic of Pemberley”, a virtual community in English about Jane Austen’s books and life. It addresses the relationships that are forged online, the trajectories of the community’s members as they discover, join, participate in and leave the group and the ways the community structures itself. Two main methodologies are employed in this research; Ethnography and in depth interviews, all conducted over the Internet. The study argues that, apart from serving the most dedicated Jane Austen fans by providing them with a place to discuss the minutiae of Austen’s work and life, Pemberley functions as a scene for strong social interactions and the creation of friendships online and beyond. 3 Table of Content page 1. Udell: The Sexually Awkward and Aloof Man Known as Mr. Collins Udell 1 The Sexually Awkward and Aloof Man Known as Mr. Collins Sean Manning Udell, Columbia University (Editor’s note: This paper was first presented at the ACTC Student Conference at Saint Mary’s College of California on February 7, 2009.) The character of Mr. Collins in Jane Austen’s Pridenovel and Prejudice is generally understood to be a very awkward man. His demeanor, mode of communication, and personality displease several characters in the novel and result in his inability to find authentic social compatibility. All of his actions follow a formula that he sees as the norm for a man of his age and stature. However, Mr. Collins’ over-emphasis on such a life plan is laughable as he creates a formula to find a life-long partner, something which men are expected to do naturally. Moreover, the deficits in his plan for finding a spouse ultimately backfire and further undermine his initial intentions. While Jane Austen offers no direct cues to explain Mr. Collins’ unique disposition, the combination of Mr. Collins’ disregard for vital courtship rituals, unorthodox reasons for finding a spouse, and use of feminine rhetorical strategies work to imply that Mr. Collins is not attracted to women. While many readers will be skeptical of the postulation that Mr. Collins is not attracted to women, a closer examinationPride of and Prejudice will help quell the uneasiness generated by this seemingly bold statement. Readers first experience Mr. Collins’ lack of sexual inclination at the Netherfield Ball: The two first dances, however, brought a return of distress; they were dances of mortification. -

Death Comes to Pemberley P.D.James It is a truth universally acknowledged that an author in possession of a good plot must be in want of a plagiarist. ******* Madam, Being somewhat acquainted with the Bennet family myself, I must protest most vociferously regarding the brief history of the daughters of that family with which the author regales us in the foreword to this novella . I can hardly countenance with equanimity the defamatory depiction of the character of the daughters of that household. Whilst I will confess to, ahem , a certain quiet affection for the former Miss Elizabeth Bennet, I am confident that any disinterested party would not endorse the interpretation of the good matrimonial fortune of the Misses Bennet as being the result (and I will be forthright) of scheming - a vulgarity of which no true lady would be capable. Admittedly, I had occasion to observe, on my prior acquaintance with these young ladies, that they seemed to command an impressively detailed knowledge of their male neighbours' yearly incomes. But that, I think, is merely to their credit, being no doubt the result of a keen intelligence. And in defence of the former Miss Elizabeth Bennet, not that I admit to any defence being necessary, I recall that she first refused Mr Darcy's offer. Surely this is proof positive that Elizabeth is entirely innocent of that unflattering character flaw, social climbing . And only the most cynical might entertain the suspicion that this initial refusal was merely confabulated to provide her with amour against such an accusation. However, as the author notes, "Elizabeth knew that she was not formed for the sad contrivances of poverty ". -

In literature place represents the topography of an area in relation to the identity of people who live there. Jane Austen’s novels can be seen as novels of manner, domestic or provincial because they represent the manners of the rural life in English family in eighteenth century. They also represent the relationships of English people in association with the place where they are. Austen uses places, many of them real, in Pride and Prejudice to create believable characters. The real places depicted are counties such as: Kent, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire and Sussex; towns such as Brighton and also local places of interest such as Dove Dale, Chatsworth and the Peak. However, the imaginary ones are towns, villages, estates and resorts in these counties such as: Meryton, Pemberley, Lambton, Kympton, Stoke, Haye-Park, Longbourn, Lucas Lodge, Ramsgate and others. Austen specifically represents rural English topography through the relationship between the English aristocracy and traditional family. Place in Pride and Prejudice mirrors the social interactions of rural English family in the eighteenth century and their manners where they live. -

The first chapter discusses Helen Fielding’s adaptations, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and examines the relationship they share with their parent texts, Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. In particular, I probe how Helen Fielding adapts specific scenes responsible for driving the marriage plot from Austen’s original versions. Fielding highlights the effects such stories have when internalized by readers, offering a critique of social standards. Like Austen, Fielding employs irony and allows her characters to repair their mistakes, lending to her comedic tone. Ian McEwan frames his novel Atonement in terms of Austen, and makes several nods to her by touching on similar issues, such as absentee parents, childhood, and the negative implications of a stringent class system. McEwan also adopts similar character archetypes but employs them in a tragic context, discussing what happens when a character must suffer the consequences of irrevocable mistakes.
