2017 Viking Football • 2 THE VIKINGS ON TELEVISION STATISTICAL COMPARISON PSU is scheduled to have six games televised this season (ESPN, Pac-12 Network, Root (2), Eleven Sports (2)). That Portland State vs. ranks as the second-most games available locally in school history (there were nine in 2012). PSU is 22-42 all-time on television since joining Division I (1996). The Vikings are 14-15 at home and 8-27 on the road. UC Davis This week’s game is televised on the Eleven Sports Network. Eleven Sports Network is available on DirecTV channel 623. Rushing Yards 377 206 Sure, the Vikings played up both games against FBS opponents, at BYU and at Oregon State, and came away 0-2, Rushing Per Game 188.5 103.0 and winning is what it is all about. The record doesn’t sound good, but wins against FBS opponents are not expected Yards Per Carry 4.2 3.1 and the play on the field has revealed an extremely competitive team. Touchdowns 3 2 On Aug. 26, PSU took BYU to the fourth quarter with the game still in doubt, trailing 14-6, before losing 20-6. Passing 32-64-3 42-61-3 And, the Vikings had an upset brewing in Corvallis on Sept. 2 at Oregon State. PSU led 32-28 with 2:43 to go. After giv- Passing Yardage 358 627 ing up a late touchdown, the Vikings still had a shot to extend the game. They drove into OSU territory and attempted Passing Per Game 179.0 313.5 a 46-yard field goal on the final play. That kick peeled just a few feet wide right and the Vikings lost 35-32. Yards Per Completion 11.2 14.9 The Vikings now face nine straight Big Sky Conference opponents. The true measure of who they are as a team Touchdowns 3 5 probably doesn’t come until this week when they play UC Davis (a Big Sky school, but counting as a non-conference Points Allowed Per Game 27.5 22.5 game) and then Montana on Sept. 30 (in a Big Sky Conference opener). Meanwhile, this is what we’ve learned: Rushing Yards Allowed 162.5 193.0 • The Viking defense is vastly improved over 2016: PSU held both FBS opponents under 400 yards of offense. BYU Yards Per Carry Allowed 4.9 4.2 totaled 365 yards and 20 points. Oregon State had 389 yards and 35 points (though seven came on an interception Passing Yards Allowed 214.5 212.5 return for touchdown). PSU forced five three-and-outs against the Beavers (one resulted in a missed 51-yard field Total Offense Allowed 377.0 405.5 goal). BYU and OSU combined to go just 7-23 on third downs (30%) and 0-1 on fourth downs against the Vikings. Fumbles Lost/Interceptions 1/3 2/3 The Vikings gave up 478 yards per game last year against ALL opponents. This year they have given up 377 yards per Fumbles Recov./Int’s Forced 1/1 1/1 game against two FBS opponents. Punting 9-47.7 10-36.3 • The revamped running game looks just fine: Portland State rushed 54 times for 291 yards against Oregon State. It Field Goals 0-1 1-1 was an impressive performance, led by a 106-yard game from SR RB Za’Quan Summers. FR QB Jalani Eason had 11 Sacks by 1-3 4-20 rushes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. FR RB Jason Talley carried nine times for 54 yards. SR WR/QB Josh Kraght had eight carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. In two games, Summers leads the team with 161 rushing yards. PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS • The young players are talented: Head Coach Bruce Barnum had 10 true freshmen on his travel roster, with eight of Passing them playing, while redshirt freshmen and sophomores have all played big roles as well. In all, 25 freshmen and Jalani Eason 27-54-3-298-3TD sophomores played against BYU and OSU. Notably, true FR QB Jalani Eason started the first two games and played Rushing well. Eason is 27-54 passing for 298 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has 20 rushes for Za’Quan Summers 38-161-0 104 yards and two scores. FR P Hayden Cowden has averaged 47.7 yards per punt in the first two games and earned Jalani Eason 20-104-2 Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in his first game. Jason Talley 14-61-0 • But the old guys have been great leaders: All four senior team captains have made significant contributions through Receiving two games. SR WR/QB Josh Kraght scored three touchdowns against Oregon State and took over at quarterback in Charlie Taumoepeau 10-125-0 the fourth quarter when Eason was injured. He scored a go-ahead rushing touchdown with 2:43 remaining in the Josh Kraght 5-106-2 game. SR WR Darnell Adams has five receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown through two games. SR LB Beau Darnell Adams 5-52-1 Duronslet had an interception and a fumble recovery at Oregon State, with both leading to Viking touchdowns. Andre Petties-Wilson 4-39-0 Duronslet has made a team-high 19 tackles. SR DE Davond Dade has made seven tackles, three tackles for loss, a Defense sack and forced a fumble. Beau Duronslet 19T-TFL-INT-FR • SO TE Charlie Taumoepeau is going to be a major offensive weapon: Taumoepeau has 10 catches for 125 yards in Artuz Manning 17T-FF two games. Most important, all 10 catches have gone for first downs, with four coming on third-down plays and one Tyler Foreman 13T on a fourth-down play. Kasun Jackett 13T • Portland State fears no opponent: The Vikings gave themselves chances to win in the fourth quarter of both games. Sam Bodine 13T PSU controlled the line of scrimmage at Oregon State, out-gaining the Beavers, 515-389. PSU had a 28-18 first-down Davond Dade 7T-3TFL-SK-FF advantage and controlled time of possession with 36:22 to 23:38. UC DAVIS AGGIES • There are areas that need to be fixed: The Vikings have committed four turnovers in two games, probably twice as Passing many as the coaching staff would comfortably live with. The kicking game needs to be solved. PSU is 0-3 on extra Jake Maier 42-61-3-627-5TD points, 0-1 on field goals and needs to find confidence in its kicking game among three freshman candidates. Rushing Justin Williams 19-91-2 BEAU DURONSLET NAMED BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Namane Modise 17-65-0 Portland State senior linebacker Beau Duronslet was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week Receiving following his performance in a 35-32 loss at Oregon State on Sept. 2. Keelan Doss 12-281-2 Duronslet, from Portland’s Central Catholic High School, made eight tackles in the game. He also intercepted a Wesley Preece 6-100-1 pass and recovered a fumble in the third quarter against the Beavers. Both takeaways led to touchdowns by the Viking Aaron Moore 6-90-1 offense. Marcus Cummins 6-65-0 For the season, Duronslet has a team-high 19 tackles. He is also the Vikings’ active career leader in tackles with Logan Montgomery 5-42-1 204. Duronslet now has five takeaways in his career as well. Defense He is the second Viking in as many weeks to win Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.
