A New Era for Mechanical CAD Time to Move Forward from Decades-Old Design JESSIE FRAZELLE
TEXT COMMIT TO 1 OF 12 memory ONLY A New Era for Mechanical CAD Time to move forward from decades-old design JESSIE FRAZELLE omputer-aided design (CAD) has been around since the 1950s. The first graphical CAD program, called Sketchpad, came out of MIT [designworldonline. com]. Since then, CAD has become essential to designing and manufacturing hardware Cproducts. Today, there are multiple types of CAD. This column focuses on mechanical CAD, used for mechanical engineering. Digging into the history of computer graphics reveals some interesting connections between the most ambitious and notorious engineers. Ivan Sutherland, who won the Turing Award for Sketchpad in 1988, had Edwin Catmull as a student. Catmull and Pat Hanrahan won the Turing award for their contributions to computer graphics in 2019. This included their work at Pixar building RenderMan [pixar. com], which was licensed to other filmmakers. This led to innovations in hardware, software, and GPUs. Without these innovators, there would be no mechanical CAD, nor would animated films be as sophisticated as they are today. There wouldn’t even be GPUs. Modeling geometries has evolved greatly over time. Solids were first modeled as wireframes by representing the object by its edges, line curves, and vertices. This evolved into surface representation using faces, surfaces, edges, and vertices. Surface representation is valuable in robot path planning as well. Wireframe and surface acmqueue |march-april 2021 5 COMMIT TO 2 OF 12 memory I representation contains only geometrical data. Today, modeling includes topological information to describe how the object is bounded and connected, and to describe its neighborhood. -

3D CAD-ohjelmien puolella tarjonta on tasoltaan vaihtelevaa. -

Open Source Design Software Overview
SEGD.org Open Source Design Software prepared by Chad Eby Herron School of Art + Design at IUPUI SEGD Academic Task Force SEGD Training Module Training SEGD Introduction to EGD Overview What is Open Source? Free and open source software (sometimes called FOSS) tools are developed “in the open” so that anyone may inspect an application’s source code—the underlying set of instructions that make the application work—that is hidden by design in proprietary tools. Not only is the source code visible, it is generally permissible to use, re- distribute and modify without restriction. This makes it free (as in freedom). As a side effect, many open source software tools are also free (as in beer), meaning image credit they are usable at no cost. Photo by Marc Mueller from Pexels Open Source Design Software Overview Why Use Open Source? An open source design software tool may be attractive to individuals and organizations due to the transparent nature of its development, the lack of restrictions on distribution and use, the suitability for a niche purpose too small for commercial viability, the low cost/no cost aspect or some combination of these factors. As good as open source tools may seem at first blush, there are some caveats. FOSS projects, especially in the early stages, may have sporadic development cycles and are sometimes abandoned entirely. Even in projects that are actively developed and well established, the documentation for the tool may lag well behind the latest released version. Finally, since some FOSS tools are passion projects of individuals or small teams, the software user interface may be quite eccentric. -
Where to Download Free Versions of Sketchup Sketchup Make for Windows
where to download free versions of sketchup SketchUp Make for Windows. SketchUp is a great solution for cheap and even free 3D modelling that’s easy to learn. Creations can quickly be uploaded to Google Earth for the world to see. Simpler without jargon. With a welcome lack of jargon and other technical terms, SketchUp Make provides a great environment for working with 3D modelling. Buildings are especially simple to design as this is one of the main functions of the application, and why it syncs to Google Earth. Easy model creation means it’s easier than ever for you to get into this great art style. The software has an intuitive interface, making it a simple task to discover the creations of others. This is a great way to get inspired and see the limitations of SketchUp. Once you’ve created a masterpiece or perfected a design, sharing it with the world only takes a few extra clicks. SketchUp quickly syncs with Google Earth and lets you upload creations with ease. But, in the free version, you don’t get access to all the features. You’ll need to pay if you want access to exporting files for CAD. With the paid version you’ll be able to add text and images to your creations, fully fleshing out your 3D model in the process. In general, this software doesn’t have as many fancy features as Maya or Blender, but it’s easier to use from the get-go. Each of these three operates in different ways, SketchUp is suited more to building design.
