As a consequence, coal is now used to supply more than half of the electricity of the United States. The abundant supply of coal has made it the most economical fuel source for steam-generated electricity. Coal is the lowest cost way to produce steam- generated electricity in the United States. The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) serves 29 states and two Canadian provinces. It consists of 35,000 route miles of track. BNSF serves ports in the Pacific Northwest, Los Angeles/Long Beach and San Francisco Bay areas, on the Gulf Coast and the Great Lakes. BNSF is the world's largest transporter of low-sulfur coal (typically 0.3-0.5% sulfur content). BNSF serves over 40 mines in eight states, and other mines by interchange with other railroads. About two-thirds of the coal BNSF hauls each year is delivered to final destination by a service partner, either a water carrier or another railroad. In 2000, BNSF moved approximately 230 million tons of coal to 60 utilities. BNSF- hauled coal has been burned by electric utilities in 28 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and Europe. Utilities burning high-sulfur coal must decide whether to install expensive scrubbers, purchase emission credits or switch to cleaner-burning low- sulfur coal to comply with the Clean Air Act's emissions standards. The Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming (PRB) has the largest reserves of cleaner-burning low-sulfur coal in the United States (76%). In fact, eight of the 10 largest mines in the United States are in the PRB. Wyoming ranks first in coal production; Montana is eighth. PRB coal production has grown rapidly, and the upcoming implementation of Phase II of the Clean Air Act is expected to cause another rapid expansion of PRB production. PRB Coal Production 1990-2000 400 350 300 250 200 150 Million Tons 100 50 0 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 Of the 15 steam electric plants with the lowest cost per mega-watt-hour in the United States, 11 burn PRB coal. Western U.S. coal is even more economical despite being transported farther than Interior or Appalachian coal. It has a lower average delivered fuel cost per MMBTU than Interior or Appalachian coal with nearly 70 to 80 percent of the Btu value. Low-sulfur PRB coal does not require expensive scrubbers to comply with the Clean Air Act. PRB coal has one-half to one-sixth the sulfur content of most other coal sources. The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company started shipping coal from the Powder River Basin almost 30 years ago. During that time, BNSF has shipped over 3.0 billion tons of PRB coal. PRB coal accounts for over 85 percent of the coal trains originated by BNSF. - 7 - MONTANA / WYOMING - POWDER RIVER BASIN ____________________________________________________________________ to Bismarck l Glendive l Forsyth to Pacific Northwest North Dakota u Rosebud - Westmoreland (.80, 8750) u Big Sky - Peabody (.74, 8800) u Absaloka - Westmoreland (.64, 8750) Montana u Spring Creek - Kennecott (.34, 9350) u Decker - Kiewit/Kennecott (.40, 9500) Sheridan l u Buckskin - Vulcan (.38, 8400) l Dutch u Eagle Butte - RAG American (.34, 8400) u Rawhide - Peabody (.36, 8320) u Dry Fork - Western Fuels (.37, 8175) u Fort Union - Kennecott (.42, 7990) South Dakota u Clovis Point - Wyodak (.42, 8050) Gillette l Campbell l l Donkey Creek Caballo - Peabody (.36, 8500) n n Belle Ayr - RAG American (.33, 8550) Caballo Rojo - Kennecott (.32, 8450) n Cordero - Kennecott (.37, 8350) n n Coal Creek - Arch (.33, 8350) Reno Jct n Jacobs Ranch - Kennecott (.45, 8695) n Black Thunder - Arch (.30, 8800) Wyoming n N Rochelle - Vulcan (.23, 8800) l Edgemont n N Antelope/Rochelle - Peabody (.20, 8800) Antelope - Kennecott (.22, 8800) n Nebraska l Guernsey Alliance
