BCS #1 vs. BCS #2 ABC Head Coach Rickey Bustle… Louisiana head coach Rickey Bustle has guided the Cajuns for seven seasons and enters his eighth year in 2009. Louisiana has now won six games and been bowl-eligible in three of the last four seasons. The last time that happened at UL was 1993-95, when the Cajuns won at least six games for three consecutive seasons. Coach Bustle won 23 games in his first five seasons with the Cajuns from 2002-06, including 11 of the last 17 games. UL won only nine games in the five seasons prior to Bustle’s arrival from 1997-2001. Bustle saw his winning percentage increase each of the first four seasons since taking the job in 2002, but regressed to .500 in 2006. His 6-6 record in 2006 was only deemed a regression because of the high standards and raised levels of expectations by the Cajuns and their fans. In fact, Bustle’s 12 wins from 2005-06 were the most in a two-year period since 1994-95. Louisiana went 4-1 at home in 2008, marking the sixth season under Bustle that the Cajuns have been .500 or better at home. Bustle boasts a 23-18 (.561) career record at Cajun Field. By comparison, UL was 6-19 (.240) at home from 1997-01.

  • Early on the Morning After Leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, Coach Les Miles Spoke Passionately About the Unique Nature of the Fighting Tigers
Early on the morning after leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, coach Les Miles spoke passionately about the unique nature of the Fighting Tigers. "They understand what being pinned down means," said Miles, who saw his team on four occasions erase fourth-quarter deficits to earn victories during its 12-2 season. "They understand what it takes to come back and fight and overcome hurdles.” When top-ranked LSU lost its ’07 regular-season finale to Arkansas, it appeared the Tigers’ chances for a national title had been extinguished. Though disappointed, LSU quickly turned its attention to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, where the Tigers – playing without starting quarterback Matt Flynn and suffering from a rash of injuries – overcame a fourth-quarter Tennessee lead to post a 21-14 victory over the Vols. Ecstatic about winning LSU’s third conference title this decade, yet frustrated about apparently falling short of a BCS title game berth, the Tigers flew home to Baton Rouge expecting to receive a Sugar Bowl invitation. However, losses that evening by Missouri and West Virginia gave LSU – which ascended to No. 2 in the BCS rankings – the cherished opportunity to meet No. 1 Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game. Before a raucous crowd of 79,651 in the Louisiana Superdome, the Tigers overcame an early 10-0 Ohio State lead with a 31-0 barrage in a 24-minute stretch to storm past the Buckeyes, 38-24. LSU, which had won its first BCS title in 2003, became the first two-time national champion in the 10-season BCS era.

But on Monday Gary Walters had to handle a very loud and angry complaint from a team that DID get into the 65-team field. Niagara, which won Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, said it felt "disrespected" because it was put into the first-round game with Florida A&M Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio. Niagara (22-11), which started the season 1-6 because it had suspended several players, felt it should not be in the Tuesday night game because there were other teams in the tournament with lower rankings than its 134 in the RPI. "I think it was shocking," coach Joe Mihalich told the Associated Press. "I think everybody was shocked and maybe some people were insulted by it. But that's good. That's fine with us." Walters dismissed the suggestion that asking teams to play in Tuesday's game cheapens their NCAA experience. "There are 260 teams that would love to be playing in the opening round game tomorrow night," Walters said in a conference call with reporters Monday afternoon.
