IV. NOTES ON SHOP-RELATED EXTRAS Shop Furniture Look for shops with synthetic leather-made beds, chairs, etc. Synthetic leather can be wiped down and disinfected. Portfolios & Other Print Products All film or printed photographs on photo/film paper contain gelatin. Print your portfolio work onto high- quality matte paper to reduce this problem. Digital portfolios are the only way to avoid this problem completely.

Prints on photo paper are non-vegan. Almost all photo paper is printed using animal products. Look for shops who reduce the use of this type of printing.

Printing cards, prints, or photos on card stock is a vegan process, if the ink being used is also vegan. We have yet to confirm which online companies are vegan.

Stickers contain an adhesive that can be made of gelatin, bone parts, and/or casein, but can be found in mineral- and vegetable-based alternatives. T-Shirts Silk screening, also known as screen printing, t-shirts is actually a vegan process. Years ago, the screens were made of silk; now, they are made of nylon. The inks used may not be vegan; this varies from printing company to printing company. We recommend calling around to find out which manufacturers the printing company uses for their ink, then contacting the manufacturers to confirm. We also recommend asking if the company uses any animal products in their inks or asking to speak to their chemical engineer.

Discharge printing is the process of bleaching fabric and then using dyes to colour the shirt. This process makes the print super soft without peeling or cracking the same way a regular print does over time. However, the ingredients involved in discharge printing are highly toxic. They include formaldehyde, which can inadvertently get washed into our water systems and out into the ocean. Apparently, there is a new “natural enzyme” used for printing, but not much is known about this.

Water based ink is also often full of chemicals, but it can be done sustainably and without harming animals or the environment. Vegan ink brands include Permaset, Soy Max Series, and One Stroke Inks.
