Sometimes being at home with the ones you love can be the most relaxing experience of all.

ANSWER: B. While many moms are motivated by this false sense of guilt, which compels them to take their kids out to parks, zoos, and farms all weekend, a well-balanced mom will understand that she needs her own time in order to be a good parent for the rest of the week. If all your time is spent with her husband and her kids, you will have no time for yourself, and will eventually lose your personal identity. Getting a babysitter for two hours will not break the bank, and it will allow you to relax and unwind.

The only problem is, your regular sitter is unavailable and your husband has his weekly soccer practice. What do you do? a. You tell hubby that his soccer team can suck it up without him this week. You’re gonna get crunk at the club! b. You tell your former BFF that family commitments are first priority. Maybe you guys can meet up next time she visits? c. You find a last-minute sitter you’ve never used before and go out anyways!

ANSWER: A. While many moms feel like spending a night out (gasp!) partying and is an irresponsible move for a parent, the op- posite is in fact true. Friends are to be cherished, and going out on the town is essential every once in a while. However, 2. Take them to the bathroom and try and calm them down. If they continue, try and keep them as quite as possible. They’re bound to fall asleep eventually. c. You look around apologetically, but let them wail. After all, what else can be expected of a small infant?

ANSWER: A. When embarking upon a long plane journey, please pack some sort of child medicine which can sedate your little one. Obviously trying to calm them down works as a preliminary measure, but if the crying/whining extends beyond the 15-minute mark, it’s simply not fair for other passengers on the plane. Everyone else on the plane paid good money for their tickets too, and unlike you, they don’t look upon your little rugrat with a mother’s eyes, so the amount of ill will and baduas your child will accumulate over the course of the 12 hour flight will pay for the price of the Children’s Motrin alone.

Giving the kids a rowdy, splashy bath will only hype them up more, thus mak- ing them less likely to go to sleep when you want them to. Allowing them to watch TV right before bed has been known to trigger nightmares in kids, and will also prevent them from going to sleep as quickly. TO It is natural for us to want to shield our kids from DISCUSS anything that could be harmful to them. After all, they are the most WITH important parts of our lives. Despite this though, YOUR growing up in America offers a whole new set of KIDS challenges for our chil- dren that we may not be able to understand. Sa- laam Namaste discusses a few tips on how to broach some serious and heavy issues with your kids in a way which will bring your family closer.

56 Salaam Namaste magazine | May 2009 SEX:

Although this may be uncomfortable to discuss with your children, it is COMPLETELY necessary. No matter how masoom your kids seem at the dinner table, they are most likely facing experiences that may cause them to become sexually active. If your child is a boy, discuss safe sex practices with him and tell him that protection is ALWAYS mandatory. If your child is a girl, discuss birth control options like pills with her. No matter the gender, try and ex- plain the emotional implications that come with being sexually active and that abstinence, though hokey, is truly the safest and best option for them until they’re sure their partner is ‘the one’.

DRUGS:

Even if your son and daughter feel strongly against drug use, they may change their minds and indulge without you knowing it. Find a comfortable way to discuss the issue with your children, and be informative, not angry. Explain the consequences that come with drug use, and remind them that apart from the legal implications and jail time that drug use brings, it may also put their dreams (college, marriage, children) on the line.

DRINKING:

Many parents are tempted to simply be harsh with their children on this issue and ban drinking completely. However, realistically, if your child is in high school, they probably attend social gatherings where mild drinking is common- place. Instead of simply admonishing them, try and focus on their safety by explaining which drinks contain too much alcohol content for them to handle, and to ensure that a designated driver is present. This will help them open up to you in case they are ever in trouble in an alcohol-related incident in the future.

PEER PRESSURE:

Even though we try and raise our children to be distinctive and unique individuals, sometimes peer pressure gets to them, despite their better judgment. Explain to your kids that it’s okay to be unpopular or out of favor for standing up for their beliefs, and that they should have respect for everyone, regardless of their personal views. In addition, reason with them and explain that even though bowing down to peer pressure may get them some popularity or new friends in the short-term, people will have more respect for them if they have a backbone and don’t compromise their morals. By: Ali Fazal

In my years of traveling to South Asian restaurants around Dallas, I’ve pretty much learned what to expect. Slightly bland if comforting food, a slightly hokey and boring ambience, along with a tepid buffet to boot. These were the very expectations I had when walking into Spice Inn that day. I would probably have some de- cent food and be on my way. Upon entering this unique and refreshing establishment, however, I knew I was in for quite a surprise.

Mere moments after crossing the threshold of Spice Inn, I felt an explosion of sensation. I felt comforted by the friendly hostess greeting at the door, leading me to my table as if I was some foreign VIP. I felt soothed by the relaxing ambience, gently accompanied by the strumming of a gentle sitar. And most of all, I felt RAVENOUS, as the savory aroma of the buffet was awaiting me.

Upon grabbing my plate for the buffet, I was tapped on the shoulder by a fellow patron. “One plate won’t be enough for this buffet,” he kindly joked. As I looked onto the never-ending buffet, I suspected he was right. I threw all formal etiquette to the wind, and filled my plates (and later my stomach) with a aromatic sampler of Indian cuisine. Instead of focusing upon one type of Indian cuisine like most similar establishments, Spice Inn clearly had pulled from all kinds of culinary inspi- rations. There was North Indian cuisine, South Indian cuisine, treats from Pakistan, and a little bit of Chinese food thrown in for good measure. This eclectic blend

78 Salaam Namaste magazine | May 2009 I strive to give the people of Dallas “ healthy food with full flavor! Pratap Bhimireddy “ OWNER - SPICE INN of countries and cumin makes me salivate to this day.

After gorging on helping upon helping of Spice Inn’s never ending buffet, I had mixed feelings. While I was completely satiated with the amazing food, I was also worried that I had inhaled about a week’s worth of caloric content. Luckily, after my chat with Spice Inn owner Pratap Bhimireddy, I realized I had no reason to worry.

“We are a socially-conscious restaurant, and as a result, we have stopped using preservatives and unhealthy items in our food,” Bhimireddy told me. I was in total disbelief. Could that sumptu- ous feast I just indulged in really be, gulp. A healthy meal? Upon hearing further explanations of Bhimireddy’s kitchen process, I was reassured. The reason they are able to cut corners with fatty ingredients and maintain all the flavor is simple. They have the best chefs in town. “I specifically hired chefs who had a spe- cialty that they were renowned for. We have one man who is the king of Biryanis. Another who makes world-famous curries,” he said. “By assigning each chef a niche area of South Asian cuisine, we are able to have low fat and high flavor.”

Upon hearing of this genius process (how have more restau- rants not picked up on it?), I was immediately a little wary. After all, such a time-consuming and intense gourmet preparation to form opinions, ideas, and pre-conceived notions process must make the food quite a premium item, and thus, before we even conduct a single interview. As someone quite expensive. However, to my delight, Bhimireddy is one who adheres to these ideals, I found myself surprised restaurateur who responds responsibly to changing socio-eco- at Spice Inn. With the rising costs of formula, diapers, and expensive shots, taking care of a baby is not easy for everyone anymore. Check with your accoun- tant or financial handler to ensure that you have the funds to raise a child the right way.

Check and see if your household is a loving one. Regardless of whether you intend to be a single parent or raise a child with your spouse, your household should exude peace and calm, at least for the first few years of a baby’s life.

Ensure that you have the support of family and friends. Even though you might think raising a child cannot be that hard (after all, the bahus on Kyunki Saas Bhi… do it effort- lessly in perfect hair and makeup in between catfights!), you will be shocked at the work that goes into it. Make sure that you have a good support system around you to help with babysitting, cooking, and other errands which you might not have time to do with a little one around.

Be sure it’s the right time for you. When think- ing of conceiving, make sure you know how you plan on balancing your career and your newborn. Also, be realistic in your expec- tations. You will not be in the right place (emotionally or psychologically) to go gunning for a big promotion right after your little chotu is born. Check with work to ensure there won’t be any issues with you taking maternity leave.

Evaluate if it’s what you REALLY want. So many moms, shortly after the new- ness of having a cute little baby has worn off, regret the decision to have a baby instead of focusing on their other life goals. Having kids is not for everyone, so if you don’t think it’s for you, don’t feel bad. Embrace the kind of person you are, and whether your personality would be well suited to being a parent. Moth- er’s Day is a celebration of Moms all around the world and will be celebrated on Sunday, May 10, 2009 this year. People recognize this special day in many different ways but mom is theMom! main focus of the day and everything revolves around her. It’s our chance to thank our moms for all that they do.

The modern Mother’s Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor its mother and is now celebrated in various ways around the world. It complements Father’s Day, the cel- ebration honoring fathers. Mother’s day means making our moms feel loved and appreciated. Whether we do it by cooking her a great meal or by giving her a box of chocolates, we want to make sure we thank mom for her dedication and commitment toward us in a special way.

When I was younger, I wondered what the big deal was about having a mother’s day. Why did I need a special day to tell my mom I love her? Don’t I show it every day just by being there? Isn’t it her job to cook for me and clean for me? Aren’t I her little bundle of joy she loves no matter what? The fact of the matter is that we often take our moms for granted. We don’t realize the importance of moms until we’re all grown up, until we fend for ourselves. Think of all the things mom did for you as a child. She cooked for you, cleaned for you, got you dressed for school, helped you with homework, drove you to your games, took you to your dance class and, well, the list could go on for- ever. And, how about all the small things mom did for you? Think of the hug you got when you had a tough day at school, think of the time she wiped the tear off your face when you cried, think of that kiss on the cheek right before you went off to school, think of her reading you a bed time story when you couldn’t fall asleep, just think of all the little things she did to make you feel safe and secure. Moms truly are amaz- ing and there’s nothing we can ever do to repay them for all they’ve done for us. But we can make Mom feel like the most special person in this world on Mother’s Day!

So let’s take this opportunity to thank mom for all she’s done. Let’s cook her a great meal, give her flowers, write her a special note, give her a hug, pamper her, give her a day off from work, get her a box of chocolates, take her to a movie, clean the house for her or give her the piece of jewelry she’s always wanted. But no matter what, let’s make sure we tell her how much we love her and how we couldn’t imagine life without her. Let’s let her know how lucky we are to have her, especially when we are living among so many who aren’t fortunate enough to experience the love – the love of a mother.

88 Salaam Namaste magazine | May 2009 BOLLYWOOD Gossip Saif out, Ranbir-Priyanka in?

It looks like the seemingly never-say-die friendship between director Siddharth Anand and Saif Ali Khan is for all practical purposes, over.

After their two films together Salaam Namaste and Ta Ra Rum Pum, the two had sworn to work together again... and again. However, Ta Ra Rum Pum didn’t do well. And Siddharth quickly got gravitated towards his childhood buddy Ranbir Kapoor for his next film Bachna Ae Haseeno.

It was widely believed that Saif would be back in Sid Anand’s next which he is committed to make for pro- ducer Sajid Nadiadwala.

But the producer confirms that Ranbir is the lead in the film that Sid Anand is making for Nadiadwala.

The surprising bit of casting is the hot-and-happening Priyanka Chopra. Though neither producer nor director are willing to confirm, according to dependable sources, Priyanka who’s currently shooting with Uday Chopra for Yash Raj Films Pyaar Impossible will be teamed up with Ranbir for the first time.

The actress has lately been window-shopping for the hottest male actors in Bollywood and has so far managed films with all the three Khan superstars, several projects with Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan, has just completed Kaminey with Shahid Kapoor and is now on to the new generation of stars with Ranbir leading the bright pack. The pairing spree certainly gives Priyanka an edge over her rivals.

Siddharth Anand describes the Ranbir-Priyanka film as, “A rom-com which I’ve specialized in over the years. But this is a twisted one with a twang and all that jazz.” Shahrukh-Salman CLASH!

If all goes well, Shahrukh Khan and will come face to face on July 3. The clash is purely professional, what with their respective films - SRK’s Dulha Mil Gaya and Salman’s Wanted - hitting the screens on that Friday.

Dulha Mil Gaya producer Viveck Vaswani is eyeing 3rd July because “July 4 is Independence Day in America and Shahrukh enjoys a massive following there. I would like to capitalize on the Independence Day weekend,” Viveck tells me. Which means Dulha Mil Gaya will clash with Salman Khan’s Wanted. “If Boney Kapoor says he’s committed for 3rd July and requests me to shift my film to another week, I will do so. But so far there haven’t been any talks,” Viveck clarifies.

Dulha Mil Gaya is far from complete. Reportedly, SRK’s portions remain to be filmed. “The talkie is complete. Just one qaw- wali remains to be shot, which can be included at the last minute too,” Viveck reveals. He also rubbishes rumors that SRK has delayed the film. “Shahrukh had informed me at the very outset of his busy schedule and the possibility of the film getting -de layed. The delay is not because of him, it’s because of me. An important schedule went haywire when my father passed away. Later, Shahrukhsuffered an injury on my sets, hence things have been pushed forward.”

Meanwhile, Dulha Mil Gaya continues to remain in news. The latest is, Anil Ambani’s Big Pictures has relinquished the rights of the project. True? “Yes, they have. The withdrawal was due to re-strategizing the company, given the current economic scenario. But I’ll offer them the film once it’s ready. If they want to pick up the rights then, it’s okay. Else, the money invested by Big will be refunded at the time of release,” he states.

“I think I owe her that,” says Madhu Mantena, “Especially after the way she has been treated.”

Jiah who has so far been very quiet about the unceremonious dismissal finally spoke up about being sacked after shooting 90 per- cent of the film.

“What can I say? The producer and director know best. God has a unique way of weaving things out. I must admit I was very low after what happened. When Madhu’s call came it was like a sign from heaven.”

The actress met up with the producer on Monday afternoon. One of the films that Jiah has appar- ently been signed for is the much talked-about sequel to Ghajini.

Jiah has learnt the virtues of caution. “It’s much too early to talk about what we’re doing together. But the important thing is, Madhu came forward when he thought I was in a situation. UTV whose film Yahoo I lost (apparently because the role was changed, and I’ve no reason to disbelieve them), have also signed me for a 2-film deal.”

Why sign Jiah for 2 films after sacking her? Jiah shrugs, “I’m too small, too new and too much of an outsider to comment on why UTV did what they did. I did work for almost two years on Yahoo. I performed a very difficult dance number with Shahid. And I was very proud of matching steps with him. Like I said it’s not mine to question why.”

Jiah has also signed Sajid Khan’s House Full where she has two other leading ladies Deepika Padukone and Lara Dutta fighting for Akshay Kumar’s atten- tion. “But I’ve my own track. And I get to do comedy for the first time. I was very good at comedy in acting school.” Then after a pause she says, “At last I’ve something to laugh about”.

The hurt of rejection and betrayal is barely concealed under the wry laughter.

90 Salaam Namaste magazine | May 2009 BOLLYWOOD Gossip Shahrukh-Salman CLASH! Bobby’s new vaada! Samir Karnik, who directed the much appreciated multi-starrer Heroes If last year, may be busy scripting his next big venture Formula No.44 all goes well, but in the meanwhile one of his earlier projects, which has been ready Shahrukh for a while, is all set to release. The film in question is the Bobby Khan and Deol- Kangna Ranaut starrer Roshan. Salman Khan will come However, the twist in the tale is that the film is face to face now called Vaada Raha and not Roshan. We on July 3. spoke to Samir who con- firmed the news, The clash is “Yes the film is now called Vaada Raha. The purely profes- name change is a deci- sion taken by the sional, what makers Eros International who thought Vaada with their Raha would be a better title. They plan to re- respective lease the film sometime in May provided the films - SRK’s strike and other issues are taken care of.” Dulha Mil Gaya and Salman’s Wanted - hitting the screens on that Friday. Vaada Raha is a family-oriented film full of emotions and Dulha Mil Gaya producer Viveck Vaswani has Bobby playing the is eyeing 3rd July because “July 4 is Independence role of a doc- tor. Day in America and Shahrukh enjoys a massive following there. I would like to capitalize on the In- dependence Day weekend,” Viveck tells me. Which means Dulha Mil Gaya will clash with Salman Khan’s Wanted. “If Boney Kapoor says he’s com- mitted for 3rd July and requests me to shift my film to another week, I will do so. But so far there haven’t been any talks,” Viveck clarifies.

Dulha Mil Gaya is far from complete. Reportedly, SRK’s portions remain to be filmed. “The talkie is complete. Just one qawwali remains to be shot, which can be included at the last minute too,” Viveck reveals. He also rubbishes rumors that SRK has delayed the film. “Shahrukh had informed me at the very outset of his busy schedule and the possibility of the film getting delayed. The delay is not because of him, it’s because of me. An impor- tant schedule went haywire when my father passed away.

The withdrawal was due to re-strategizing the company, given the current eco- nomic scenario. But I’ll offer them the film once it’s ready. If they want to pick up the rights then, it’s okay. Else, the money invested by Big will be refunded at the time of release,” he states. SN
