  • 70 Canadian Mines, Indigenous Communities
Canadian Mines, Indigenous Communities and Accountability in Guatemala: What Role for the Media? Cara Haberman Columbia University, New York Keywords : accountability, Canada, corporate social accountability, Guatemala, under-reporting, watchdog Abstract This article examines the role of the Canadian press as corporate watchdog. A content analysis of Canadian newspapers over a five-year period reveals that human rights abuses perpetrated by Canadian mining companies in Guatemala are under-reported. Sourcing constraints, lack of newsworthiness and other traditional journalism standards help explain why this story is ‘missing’ in the traditional press. Reporting critical of the mining companies was produced principally by individual journalists with a personal interest in the issue; however readership and ownership patterns in the Canadian media detract from the potential influence that this independent reporting may have. Ongoing conflicts between indigenous Guatemalans and Canadian mining companies working in the country’s highlands are periodically exposed by the news media. Large Canadian companies such as Goldcorp and HudBay have been accused of leaching arsenic into the groundwater, causing mineral poisoning of local communities, forcing the expulsion and relocation of Mayan villagers, ignoring the land rights of indigenous communities, and aiding and abetting pro-mining militias who have assassinated local activists. Rather than being isolated incidents, these atrocities are widespread due in part to the policies of both the Guatemalan and Canadian governments. The Guatemalan government has been supporting foreign development of its extractive industries under the advice of the World Bank since the 1990s; Oxfam-America estimates that mining concessions currently cover over 10 percent of the countryside and that Canadian companies own 80 percent of these mines.

  • Original and Microfilmed Newspaper Collections in the Archives of Ontario Most Recent Update: L 23 Customer Service Guide December 2003
Archives of Ontario Original and Microfilmed Newspaper Collections in the Archives of Ontario Most Recent Update: L 23 Customer Service Guide December 2003 Introduction This finding aid (L 23) contains a complete inventory of original newspaper holdings of the Archives of Ontario for newspapers published in the province of Ontario and its predecessors, Upper Canada and Canada West, which are not on microfilm. The finding aid also includes an inventory of the Archives holdings for all newspapers on microfilm, regardless of place of publication. The microfilm series for these newspapers are prefixed by an "N" code. Please consult the newspaper card catalogue in the Main Reading Room for detailed descriptions of individual reel contents of newspapers on microfilm, and for the reel numbers of mastheads listed here. Historical introductions and tables of contents for the newspapers on microfilm are filed by "N" number in Appendices "A" to "C" of the Newspapers Collection Inventory. Column eight in Appendices A4 and A5 indicates whether an introduction is available () or not (X) for newspapers under a specific "N" number. These introductions are usually on the first reel of each microfilm series. Original Newspapers are listed alphabetically by masthead (Appendix A1), then by place (Appendix A2), with the exception of Toronto, which is catalogued separately (Appendix A3). Newspapers on Microfilm are listed sequentially by the "N" catalogue number for the film series (Appendix A4), then by place of publication, followed by masthead and date range order (Appendix A5). NB: the definite article “The” has been omitted from the Masthead listings and the community’s name has usually been deleted, if it is the same as the one in the "Place of Publication" column.

  • Brantford Detox/Rehabilitation Information Gathering Session
Brantford Detox/Rehabilitation Information Gathering Session February 7, 2012 - Laurier Brantford . DAL-007 - 8:30 am -12:00 pm Enclosed you will find information regarding the very successful session I held on February 7'", regarding the interest in having a detoxlrehabilitation centre in Brant. To provide some background, I have been hearing form my constituents for some time now regarding the lack of a centre closer to Brant for detoxification and rehabilitation services. Much needed service and resources that if more readily available, could help even more people in our immediate and surrounding communities. It was while campaigning last year that I heard truly inspiring, and sometimes painful, stories about the lack of these services in the area, and where people had to go to get the help they need. What I was unable to ascertain is if any public meetings or gatherings have been held to discuss this type of facility here in Brant - both good or bad, for those for or against. Furthermore, until the meeting of February 7'", no one community agency had publicly come forward to champion this kind of facility in the area. We discovered at the meeting that St. Leonard's Society, in partnership with the Brant Community Healthcare System is applying for funding in order to do a needs assessment - a powerful first step in realizing a centre in Brant. The participation of the day was awe inspiring for me. With 13 speakers and 48 additional guests, the approximately 61 who attended spanned the riding. We were honoured to hear about certain agencies that have already started in-ground work on this kind of facility, as well as listening to folks who have faced addiction and were kind enough to share their story with perfect strangers in hopes that their experience would help others.
