ST DAVID’S & ST OSWALD’S WORLESTON October 2018

THE CROSS COUNTRY PARISHES OF ACTON, , WETTENHALL & WORLESTON Dear Friends

Still coming with thankful hearts?

As we celebrate Harvest over the next few weeks, we will no doubt sing Come ye thankful people come. As an early Harvest draws to an end and we look forward to celebrating, it is worth pausing to ask how thankful our hearts really are. It’s been an interesting year in terms of weather. The pre-Christmas snowfall in this area, and the Beast from the East in March, brought bitterly cold weather. We complained about the cold, the ice and the inconvenience of snow whilst children enjoyed unexpected ‘snow days’ to enjoy playing in the snow. Spring was long, cold, wet and miserable. We rejoiced when we were catapulted into summer then we moaned that it was too hot and lived in fear of hosepipe bans. Now Autumn seems to have arrived early, and we are missing the summer already. Weather is an important feature of social conversation in this country. Yet we are slow to think about the ways in which our varied and unpredictable weather affects far more than our conversation. For farmers and other food producers such as fishermen, the weather has a daily impact on lives and businesses. A long, wet, slow spring meant that winter and spring-sown crops didn’t grow. The Beast from the East made for a difficult lambing season. Drought followed with the need to feed livestock feed that had been produced for the winter. The result of our topsy turvy weather? According to the Centre for Economic and Business Research we can expect our monthly shopping bills to rise by £7.15 per month. We may not have noticed yet, but we will. Between March and July the wholesale price farmers receive for the food they produce rose by 80% for carrots, although they’ve only gone up 41% in the shops at the moment. Bread prices have risen by 1/5 and strawberries by 28% (although supermarkets are still selling 2 packs for £3 as they did last year). Meat will fall in price initially because farmers sold livestock during the drought to reduce the costs of feed, but it too will rise because of costs involved in feeding livestock through the drought. How thankful are we feeling now, knowing we will have to pay more for our food? The challenge of Harvest is that we remember to say ‘Thank you’ regardless of how good the harvest is. There is a harvest, and compared with many in the world, there is much to be thankful for. How about setting ourselves a challenge next time we feel like grumbling about the weather or the price of our shop, how about pausing to say ‘Thank you’ instead?

Yours in our generous God,

Revd Anne

8 Calveley School News

Fiona Sloyan (our resident beekeeper) invited five Year 5 & 6 children to her home where they had a ‘sticky’ time extracting honey from honey frames made by our own Calveley bees. The children carefully removed a thin layer of wax to expose the honey. This was then put in a metal drum and with the aid of centrifugal force (children spinning a handle fast) was pulled out of the frames. The children then took great delight in watching the golden honey pour out of the drum into a sieve & bucket. The honey will rest for a couple of days to remove air bubbles and then it will be put into jars and labelled. Look out for ‘Honey for Sale’ at the Christmas Fair!!!’

10 11 A Parish Remembers Remembering Corporal John George Rathbone of Wettenhall An afternoon Tea Party and service of commemoration to remember a local hero. Corporal John George Rathbone [known as Jack to his family] lost his life towards the end of World War I at Poperinge in Belgium on 19th August 1918. He is buried there in a military grave with ‘Peace, perfect peace’ as his epithet; he was just 26 years old. Born in Wettenhall, near Tarporley, he attended Calveley School and before war broke out he was engaged to be married and working as a chauffeur in Cuddington. 100 years to the day when he gave his life for King and country, he was remembered with honour at St David’s Church, Wettenhall with an afternoon tea party and Church service. The service was attended by his niece Mrs Gladys Heppell, her daughter Susan, son in law Jeremy and grandson Ben. Corporal Rathbone’s nephew, Harry Tickle, was unable to attend the service and was represented by his grandson, James Roberts, along with his wife Siobhan. James gave a moving account of visiting Poperinge to see Corporal Rathbone’s grave, with the sense of pride and gratitude that the visit instilled. During the Act of Remembrance , led by Rev Anne Lawson, David Waring [standard bearer to the Cheshire Regiment] and Graham Rathbone [no relation] represented Tarporley Royal British Legion as part of the ‘There, But Not There’ commemoration of the centenary of the ending of hostilities in WWI.

12 After the service everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea - St.David’s is justly famous for it’s food. Long term memories of the event include a beautiful acrylic image of Corporal Rathbone, designed as part of the “There but not There” commemoration and mounted by Chris Pope and Pete Webb. The acrylic silhouette will help to connect communities and remember soldiers lost a century ago. At the front of the church is a planter with poppies, forget-me-nots and a ‘Peace’ rose, arranged by Brenda Brockbank. Helen Moss has recently registered the St.David’s memorial to Corporal Rathbone with the register held by the Imperial War Museum – gone but not forgotten. At the end of the afternoon a collection raised funds for ‘Help for Heroes’ and the Haig Fund ‘Poppy’ Appeal. A memorable, moving and fitting tribute to a local man who gave his life in the service of his Country and King.

CORPORAL RATHBONE AT CATHEDRAL

During September an exhibition to commemorate the Centenary of the end of the Great War was held in Chester Cathedral. We were thrilled that the figure of Corporal Rathbone was on display in the cloisters for everyone to see.

13 FOOTNOTE TO CORPORAL RATHBONE COMMEMORATION SERVICE...… It was with great sadness that we heard just one week following the service, that Harry Tickle, the nephew of Corporal Rathbone, died in Tarporley Hospital. Harry was visited by his family on the evening of the service, and enjoyed hearing all about the event and holding the smaller version of the 'There but not There' replica of his Uncle Jack. His last week was spent reminiscing on his life in Wettenhall and the memories of a special afternoon to honour his family. Harrys funeral service and burial took place at St. Peters, Waverton on 10th September. Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family at this sad time. Confirmation

Dates for your Diary Friday October 5th. Harvest From The Registers service at 6pm in St Oswald's BAPTISM church followed by supper in the 9th September 2018 school. Edward Joseph Webb, infant son of Marc and Alice Webb. Saturday 10th November We welcome Edward (Ted) into the Evening with Don Reid at family of the church. Wettenhall 16 St Oswald’s School News The start of a new academic year has arrived and we would like to welcome all our new arrivals in to school including all the new reception children starting school for the first time as well as several new families joining the St. Oswald's School family.

One week in to the new term and things have got off to a very exciting start with our whole school taking part in a two day big art project involving an artist coming into each class to help design our very own St. Oswald's Poppy cascade like the Tower of London style. Each class continued this with doing some of their own WW1 art work for display. We are marking the forthcoming centenary Commemorations for Armistice Day with a whole school project entitled 'We will Remember'. Our younger children in Nursery and Reception will be learning about people around us that help and then the rest of our school will be learning about WW1. This will be an exciting whole school cross curricula project which will culminate in a trip to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester as well as taking part in the 'We will Remember' project taking place across Nantwich in November.

We are looking forward to a very busy and exciting Autumn Term here at St. Oswald's which wouldn't be the same without the traditional Harvest Service and Supper back at school which will be held on Friday 5th October.

Introducing a new initiative for Rural Policing Nicky and I have covered the rural ‘beat’ for over 14 years and our area of geographical responsibility is extensive – we cover a policing area of approximately 130 square miles with a population size of approximately 30,0000 people. Vickie Wallace supports our service during times of holiday etc. To achieve optimum efficiency and manage our patch more effectively, we are constantly evaluating our policing practices and exploring new and innovative methods of working. To this end, we are grateful to Acton Church for supporting us in our plans to introduce a rural police ‘Pop-Up’ station - operating at the Church on a monthly basis. We will base ourselves at Acton Church between 09.30hrs – 10.30hrs on the 1st Monday of each month (unless it is a Bank Holiday - when we will attend on the 2nd Monday in the month). We will commence this new service on 1st October 2018 when we will be available to welcome anyone who wishes to have a chat. Our vision is to set up ‘Pop-Up’ rural police stations at points across our territory with the aim of becoming more visible, accessible and approachable to the local communities. We want to make it even easier for the community to come and talk to us. Much rural crime remains unreported and our main objective is to address this problem through adopting more integrated methods of community working.

Contact details : [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] You can also ring 101 and ask the call taker to send a message. We can be followed on Facebook Bunbury & Police or Twitter BunburyWrenPol You will find us to be approachable and easy to talk to. We hope that you will pop in to see us when we are at Acton Church - and get to know us better.
