About the Estate

The estate comprises properties in: The British Estate is located in Berkeley House built 1969 in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and is bordered by Bow Road, Columbia House built 1974 the former St Clements Hospital site Esk House built 1974 and the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. As part of the Estate Regeneration scheme, private housing developments were built along with new commercial units which currently house a ‘Tesco Express’ store. A new Community centre was also built which provides a range of activities for residents of all ages such as parent and toddlers’ play sessions, youth clubs, language classes, elderly persons’ keep fit sessions.

The neighbouring former St Clements Hospital site is due to be redeveloped by the East London Community Housing Trust. The plans include the provision of social housing for rent and affordable homes for sale for local employed people along with commercial and community initiatives, whilst retaining the historic listed buildings.

The estate has excellent transport links being served by , DLR and bus routes to , the City, , the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield Centre at Stratford City. In Bow Road there are a variety of local shops and restaurants and the Roman Road market is within walking distance of the estate. which provides a full range of leisure and sporting activities for all ages is short walk away. Local residents and dog walkers can also enjoy the facilities of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.

There are a number of schools close which are accessible by walking or bus- primary schools include Malmesbury, Guardian Angels and Wellington Way and local secondary schools include St Pauls Way, Central Foundation for Girls and Bow Boys. For further education, the Queen Mary College site is also a short bus ride away. Regenerating the estate As of February 2013, 99% of homes on the British estate met the Decent Homes Standard. Along with the private housing and new community facilities developed under the estate regeneration programme, 24 new tenanted units were developed and let by EastendHomes. Works completed during the refurbishment of the estate included new roofs, windows, external cladding of blocks, environmental works, and new play areas. Around £23million was invested in total during the regeneration of the British estate. ACTION PLAN

In reviewing the information gathered in preparing this Neighbourhood Plan, and following discussions with local residents, we have four key goals to improve the services EastendHomes provide to residents of the British estate. These are: • Progress tenant and leaseholder audits with a focus on promoting fire safety and ways of reducing noise nuisance

• Promote responsible disposal of recycling through piloting of a ‘Recycling Zone’ aiming to reduce instances of rubbish contamination

• Explore the provision of new play facilities on the estate

• Continue to work with Providence Row Housing Association to improve green areas on the estate
