NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 6, 2017 ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS WORLD PREMIERE OF JEFFREY HATCHER’S “HOLMES AND WATSON” Thrilling New Mystery from Writer of ATC Smash Hit “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club” and film “Mr. Holmes” Even after his supposed “death” at Reichenbach Falls, the great detective kept his hold on the world through the frauds, fakes and charlatans claiming to be him, forcing the loyal Dr. Watson to find the truth in Arizona Theatre Company’s world premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher’s Holmes and Watson. This thrilling new mystery from the celebrated writer of ATC smash hits Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, will play at the Temple of Music and Art In Tucson from April 15 through May 5 and at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix from May 11-28. Arizona Theatre Company’s 50th anniversary season is sponsored by I. Michael and Beth Kasser. The final show of the 2016-17 season, directed by ATC Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein, finds Dr. Watson at a remote mental asylum on an island off the Scottish coast, where three recently admitted men claim to be the late detective. Each matches Holmes’s physical description and knows secrets only the real Holmes could possibly know. Watson heads to the asylum to confront the three, convinced that one of them must be the real Holmes. As he investigates, Watson is drawn into a web of intrigue, murder and surprise revolving around what really happened at Reichenbach Falls in the fateful confrontation between Holmes and the criminal mastermind, Professor Moriarty. -

JOSEPH HANREDDY [email protected] Employment History August 23, 2010 – Present: Co-Director, Fellowship in Directing and Design, Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Conceived and created a new graduate program within the Department of Theater in which four fully funded Fellowships, two in Directing and two in Design are awarded to artists with the potential to become theater innovators and leaders. The two-year program focuses on collaborative process and in addition to classroom instruction, the team of directors and designers create a series of productions within the UWM theater department and in conjunction with theaters in Milwaukee’s professional theater community. Concurrent to their work at UWM, the Fellows observe, assist leading professional directors and designers on productions in Milwaukee as well as at leading regional theaters throughout the country. On-going follow-up, career assistance and mentoring continue after the Fellows are awarded a certificate of completion from the UWM Graduate School. The first class will begin in the fall of 2011. 1993 – July 1, 2010: Artistic Director, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee, WI Founded in 1954, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater is one of the nation’s preeminent regional theaters, operating under an Actor’s Equity LORT B+ contract and annually producing three simultaneous subscription seasons in the Patty and Jay Baker Theater complex comprised of 720, 218 and 118 seat performance spaces. Henry James, uti lized inherited wealth to study and write in religion and by Henry James philosophy. The family circle {four sons and a daughter} was a close though eccentric one, with much exchange of ideas. SYDNEY STUDIES 'The face at the window': Gothic thematics in Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and The Turn of the Screw HEATHER NEILSON Whether conservatively defined as referring to a group ofnovels written by English authors between the 1760s and the 1820s - a definition which would include Frankenstein, but not Wuthering Heights or The Turn afthe Screw - or more liberally as a genre still vital and eVOlving, the Gothic novel is characterized by several established features. The predominant characteristic is an emphasis on fear: stories in the Gothic mode are overtly affective in intent, concerned with eliciting as well as portraying extremes of emotion. Also generally found in the Gothic novel are a prominent use of the supernatural (even when all phenomena have been logically explained away by the end of the tale), an archaic setting, the depiction of violence and passion, and stereotyped characters. It is a commonplace that the Gothic is essentially a middle class genre, having first emerged in a period of instability in personal, social and political realities. In the Gothic novel there is a precarious oscillation between anxiety and reassurance, as regards the alien or disruptive, a sustained tension between the expression and repression ofirrational or unwholesome desires. While Gothic fiction seems ostensibly to uphold prevailing social structures and mores, implicit in the genre is a social critique, which may be directed, as for example in the three novels under discussion, against public institutions such as the Church or the Law, whose efficacy is implicitly questioned. There is a correlative exploration ofthe issue ofpersonal responsibility in the domestic sphere. -

THE RETURN OF THE SCREWED UP: AN ANALYSIS OF THE TURN OF THE SCREW By Ashley Begley, McAnulty College of Liberal Arts Instructor: Matthew Heilman Henry James’ novel The Turn of the Screw is a psychological thriller that centers around a sexually repressed governess yearning for the affection of a male of a higher social class than she. It is likely that the main narrator of the story – the governess herself – is unreliable, as she tells the story years later and her memory is potentially clouded by her experiences and desires. She apparently begins to see ghosts, which manifest themselves just as she is having inappropriate sexual thoughts or when she is thinking about her intense affection for the children. Although these thoughts are seemingly about her master – the uncle of her two charges – the appearance of the ghosts may represent something far more sinister, namely her hidden sexual desires for the young boy that she is meant to care for. -

1 A Non-Apparitionist Reading of The Turn of the Screw James Sexton In at least two of James's novellas the protagonists’ perceptions are far from unimpeachable. Both John Marcher of The Beast in the Jungle and his counterpart in The Aspern Papers deceive themselves as to the motivations of their own actions. The irony which results from a protagonist’s failure to grasp his real motives fairly jumps off the page in The Turn of the Screw. Like John Marcher, the governess is self-deceived, and by the end of the story she stands revealed as a woman so obsessed with becoming mistress of Bly, the country estate, that she unwittingly destroys her two charges in an effort to convince herself of her worthiness not only to run the household, but to become her master's capable wife and loving mother to his wards. Her unacknowledged and unconscious stratagem is to insinuate herself into the good graces of Miles, Flora, and Mrs. Grose, and ultimately to parlay their affection and her own good housekeeping record into possession of Bly and the master. Thus economic and sexual motives define the governess. Unaware of them at the conscious level, she creates Peter Quint and Mrs. Jessel as projections of her subconscious sexual and economic designs, thus purging her con- science of what a respectable onlooker might otherwise see as the machinations of a “designing woman” or Jezebel. Those critics who absolve the governess of any blame in the death of Miles and the emotional withering of Flora and who instead see the story as an allegory of the struggle between good and evil or of the Fall of Man ignore objections which render their interpretations unconvincing. -

What Maisie Knew: The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl Mastering Language Dennis Tredy Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 Henry James’s 1897 novel, What Maisie Knew, a Bildungsroman centered on a small child whose plight is that of a helpless “bone of contention” (James 1908, 5)1 buffeted between divorcing parents, step- parents and other would-be guardians, is one of the author’s five major works focusing on the trials and tribulations of young English women of heightened awareness but of uncertain social status, all of which were written in the immediate aftermath of the author’s painful and spectacular failure as a would-be London playwright in the early 1890s. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] “Almost a Sense of Property”: Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw, Modernism, and Commodity Culture Metaphorical, if not literal, homelessness has seemed to many to be a defining condition of the life and work of Henry James. His friend Edmund Gosse, for instance, wrote that James was a “homeless man in a peculiar sense,” one who was never truly settled either in England, his adopted country, or the United States, his country of origin.i More recently, John Carlos Rowe has related James’s deracination to cosmopolitanism, outlining how the concerns of his fiction foreshadow recent efforts within the humanities to renovate the cosmopolitan ideal of respect for international and intranational differences.ii And John Landau has argued that James’s complex late style both highlights and attempts to compensate for a general sense of cultural “homelessness”— that is, the increasingly unstable “grounds” of belief and knowledge in late-Victorian and Edwardian culture.iii In this essay I relate James’s experience of metaphorical homelessness to The Turn of the Screw (1898), the longest and most terrifying of his many ghost stories. -

After shouting at her, Susanna realizes that Maisie is scared of her and that it is in Maisie's best interests to stay behind. The Queen's Gambit. The film is set in present-day New York City, and the professions of Maisie's parents are changed. James has a knack both for creating monsters and weaklings.
