Gladys West (Born in 1931) Gladys Mae West is an African-American mathematician known for her contributions to the mathematics involved in the Global Positioning System (GPS). She grew up on a share cropping farm,wanting an education. After gaining a scholarship for achieving the first rank in her high- school class, she studied mathematics at Virginia State College. In 1956, West began to work at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, where she was the second black woman ever to be employed. West began to collect data from satellites, eventually leading to the development of Global Positioning System. Her supervisor Ralph Neiman recommended her as project manager for the Seas at Radar altimetry project, the first satellite that could remotely sense oceans. West was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018. Sole Hope Drive - Sole Hope Club is organizing a "Care Kit" drive for people in Uganda that are affected by a parasite called Jiggers. We will be collecting items outside of 7C1 during all lunch periods between February 4th - February 15th. Possible materials for the care packages include: Cotton balls, Band-aids, LARGE safety pins, alcohol swabs, children's (positive) stickers, Quart Zip-lock bags, and snack size Zip-lock bags. We will also be collecting cards with encouraging messages! Clubs offering points for donation include: NHS, and Key Club, Red Cross, and H.O.P.E.! February 28th - 4:30 PM in the Library February is Black History Month and this year, the National Society of Black Engineers will be hosting a Black History Show. Our topic this year will be DIVERSITY, and we will showcase the culture and background of African-Americans. We are still in need of talent and performers for our event! If you would like to participate (speak, sing, dance, spoken word, poetry, etc.) and provide something related to our topic or black history, note that there is a sign - up form for performers. Your sign up will be void if you do not fill out the form COMPLETELY. We will then hold a brief run though on what you would like to do. There is a just for freshman which uses theatre games to learn social skills and adaptation, another group about learning to relate to yourself and others, another group for preparing yourself for college life, and also a group about building healthy relationships. Please check your emails for details about these groups that will be weekly, February 25 - April 15. • Putting the Pieces Together: Hey juniors and seniors! Are you stressed about college? Want to feel more prepared? Come join your peers in Putting the Pieces Together to be ready for life after high school. • The next group is Radical Empathy. Are you interested in forming stronger, more authentic connections with the people in your life? Join the Radical Empathy group and go on a journey of self-discovery with a group of like-minded students! • The next group is called Relationship Remix. This is a 10-week conversation about friendships and relationships, the good moments, the messy moments, and everything in between. • The final group is called Improv to Improve. Transitioning into the rigors of high school can be daunting. This 8-week group for Freshmen uses improvisation and theatre games to improve concentration, increase spontaneity, and build social skills. Hk Maker Lab Summer Program in Engineering Design - Grades 10 and 11 Application Deadline: March 15, 2019 Event: July 15-August 22, 2019 Contact: Michael Carapezza Hk Maker Lab is a free six-week hands-on summer program in biomedical engineering design for students currently in grades 10 and 11. Students will work in groups of four to learn the engineering design process and apply it to solve a real-world health problem. Along the way, they will learn how to build electronic devices, write code, and use fabrication tools like 3D printers. The program takes place Monday-Thursday from 10:00am-4:00pm at Columbia School of Engineering, 500 West 120 Street in Manhattan.
