  • Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

Murray: Mae West and the Limits of Radio Censorship in the 1930s Mae West and the Limits ofRadio Censorship in the 19305 by MATTHEW MURRAY N DECEMBER 12, 1937, Mae West appeared on network radio and the pat O terns of broadcast censorship were never the same again. In the space of thirty minutes, during what was West's only major radio performance, invio lable taboos concerning sacred texts were breached and heterosexual female desire was accorded unprecedented license over the airwaves. The program produced a vitriolic reaction from religious and reformist organizations, which criticized the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for failing to apply appropriate editorial oversight. By orchestrating an organized campaign to rid radio of similar moral improprieties in the future, these groups managed to extend their social influence into the realm of broadcasting regulation. However, this campaign provoked a backlash in the popular press and from members of the general public, who advocated a more relaxed policy regarding the aural representation of sex, sexuality, and gendered display. The fierce discursive exchanges that took place in the aftermath of West's appearance attested to a wider divergence over what constituted normative gendered sexuality and the limits of acceptable female public deportment in the U.S.

4 Bringing Bogie ut of the Courtroom Closet: Law and Lawyers in Film Prof Rennard Strickland Casablanca (19421is a film of mystery and romance. Warner Brothers cultivated that aura of intrigue not only about the place Casablanca but also about the man Rick. His mysterious past is among the reasons Casablanca is ranked by general audi- ences as the most popular American film of all time. Questioning Rick's past seems almost subversive, somehow disloyal, unfair to the memory of Humphrey Bogart. And yet, there is no doubt about it: the mysterious Rick Blaine was a law- yer-a criminal attorney at that! Rick, surely the most famous cine- matic bar owner in history, was also admitted at the bar of justice. Before coming to Casablanca for the waters, Rick had been a practicing attorney first in New York City and then in Paris. The old Hollywood studio system was good at doing what it set out to do; in Casablanca it sought to obscure the past of the man Bogart immortalized on the screen. And Prof. Rennard Strickland the film did just that! It is absolutely impossible from the film itself to estab- lish Rick's legal credentials. Closeting Rick was a deliberate decision by the film's producers. senting themselves. • Diamonds to Dust
Press Kit for Diamonds to Dust A Film by Rob Villano Premiere May 31, 2014 Hoboken International Film Festival Press Contact: Frank Ferruccio CEO Ferruccio Enterprises 181 Kendall Road Kendall Park, NJ 08824 732-297-2548 Synopsis Mansfield was a legend just like Marilyn Monroe. They were both bleached blonds with hourglass figures, were married three times and had numerous lovers, and each appeared in 29 films. The only real difference is Jayne had five children and Marilyn had none. They both died tragically in their thirties... so why is Marilyn Monroe so remembered and Jayne not at all? Jayne Mansfield was an amazing woman with an IQ of 163. She played the violin and piano, had a degree in Science, spoke five languages fluently, and became a celebrity by portraying a dumb blond. Within one year of moving to Hollywood she starred in her first film. By the age of 23, she was the most publicized Hollywood star in the world. Marilyn Monroe's own studio, 20Th Century Fox, signed Jayne Mansfield to an exclusive seven year contract. Jayne starred in four big budget films back to back with Fox which catapulted her career to stardom. When Marilyn settled her legendary dispute with the studio, Jayne abruptly became yesterday's news. Jayne Mansfield spent the next 9 years of her short life searching for highs like she had experienced as a newcomer in Hollywood. When they didn't happen onscreen she turned to the tabloids. Having children, getting married and divorced, and parading the world with scores of lovers took its toll on Jayne.
