The Queen of Rhythm and Blues Diese Zusammenstellung von 31 Songs zeigt eindrucksvoll die äußerst interessante Karriere von Ruth Brown. Blues, as a musical form, has had and continues to have a profound effect on the entire music industry, both in the United States and abroad. Blues constitute a rich cultural entity in its pure form; but its influence goes far beyond this-for itis the bedrock of jazz, the basis of much of folk and country music and it is closely akin to gospel. But finally and most importantly, blues and its derivatives- and the concept of soul-are major factors in today's pop music. In fact, it is no exaggeration to state flatly that blues, a truly American idiom, is the most pervasive element in American music COVER PHOTO today. Ray Charles symbolizes the World Therefore we have embarked on this study of blues.

Blue Rhythms ----- six LIVES --~- IN RHYTHM AND BLUES Chip Deffaa University of Ilinois Press Urbana and Cbicago copyright 1996 1 --- ----.----------------. RUTH BROWN ------ -_.__... --------- "Nobody knows you. " "We're going to do 'SI. Louis Blues.' There's no arrangement. I want everybody's input for what they think is best," Ruth Brown tells the musicians gathered around her in the studio. Guitarist Rodney Jones asks if he might switch to banjo for this number; she nods. She tells trumpeter Spanky Davis he is to start it out, specifying: "I want an in- tro that won't give away what I'm going to sing-not the melody." She directs the other musicians to hold off until she reaches a certain point in the lyrics. Davis experiments with possible introductions. In the control room, producer Ralph Jungheim says to engineer John Eargle: "Let's roll tape." They don't inform the musicians they're rolling. Davis settles on an intro, and Brown intones, ('I hate to see. II i watch the unfolding of this song in fascination, marveling at the expressiveness she can bring to a line like "if I'm feeling tomorrow like i feel today"-a line that takes on added meaning because I know that in recent days, due to the tlare-up of an injury, her legs have been giving her much pain. In fact, yesterday, the first day of the recording session, she had been in a wheelchair. Now she repeats the line, coming in just a bit later than you'd expect and thereby build- ing anticipation; she's calling out now, testifying with an unexpect- ed urgency: "If I'm fee/iiig tomorrow." This timeless blues is a perfect song for Brown.

Miss Rhythm" Speaks out Only Difference Is That This Sort of Lyric Then Was Off in a Corner by Itself

10 THE ROCK HISTORY READER The major diskeries, with the apparently same disregard as to where the blue notes may fall, are as guilty. Guiltier, perhaps, considering the greater obligation-their maturer backgrounds-their time-honored relations with the record-buying public. 3 The most casual look at the current crop of "lyrics" must tell even the most naive that dirty postcards have been translated into songs. Compared to some of the language that loosely passes for song "lyrics" today, the "pool-table papa" and "jellyroll" terminology of yesteryear is polite palaver. "Miss Rhythm" Speaks Out Only difference is that this sort of lyric then was off in a corner by itself. It was t!ie music underworld-not the mainstream. Ruth Brown on R&B and Covers For the music men-publishers and diskeries-tQ. say that "that's what the kids want" and "that's the only thing that sells nowadays," is akin to condoning publication of back-fence language. Earthy dialog may belong in "art novels" but mass media have tremendous obligation. If they forget, they'll hear from authority. Seemingly that is not the case in the music business. Before it's too late for the welfare of the industry-forgetting for the moment the welfare of young Americans-VARIETY urges a strong self-examination of the record business by its most responsible Singer Ruth Brown (1928-2006), whose title of "Miss Rhythm" signified her .importance t? the growing R&B field in the early chief executive officers. A strong suspicion lingers with VARIETY that these business men are too 1950s, was one of the first artists to bring prommen.ce to the mde pendent label Atlantic Records.
