David Poecking (Pastor) Christmas isn’t only about snow gently falling on fi r trees, decorative lights, and reindeer. It’s about how a traveling mother, Mary, gives birth in a strange town under diffi cult conditions. It’s also about how our patron, the Archangel Gabriel, announced that Mary’s son, Jesus, “will be great…and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Christmas is about how an army of angels announce to the shepherds that God is to get the THEFROM PASTOR credit for a great victory bringing peace to his favored people on Earth. It’s about how Joseph extends his paternal protection to the child as they fl ee to Egypt—in order to escape the malice of an anxious king, who has guessed that the child will threaten his kingdom. And the king may be right, because Christmas is about how God inaugurates his own divine government over a rebellious and hostile world. As bad as the world seems to be, the bad can’t last forever, because God has already begun to establish his kingdom. Let the princes of this world take off their crowns and kneel in humility. Let the wealthy abandon their gold. Let the powers of Hell tremble in anticipation of their downfall, for the new and eternal king is already born to us. We worship on Christmas in thanksgiving for this good news, and in celebration of the Providence of God, who works out such a wonderful plan for our salvation. May God grant you new joy and hope for the Christmas season! I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. I will fi x a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to affl ict them as they did of old, since the time I fi rst appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom fi rm. GOSPEL — LUKE 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

24 May The Blessed VIRGIN MARY Help of Christians Principal Patroness of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the Salesian Family Solemnity When this solemnity coincides with a Sunday of Paschal Time or the solemnity of Pentecost, the celebration is transferred to the first free day following (cf Roman Missal, General norms for the liturgical year and the Calendar, nn. 5, 60). For the pastoral good of the faithful, when the solemnity falls on a weekday, its celebration may be transferred to the following Sunday, provided the latter be a Sunday in Ordinary Time. In this case the formulary may be used at all Masses in which the people take part (cf ibid., nn. 58, 59). In the complicated network of human events, Christian peoples have frequently experienced in the course of history the practical help of the Virgin Mary, especially in moments of particular difficulty for the life of the Church. Thus has been added a further title to the Mother of God: "Help of Christians". The date chosen for the feast was 24 May, the day on which Pope Pius VII returned to Rome after his miraculous liberation from prison in 1814. Saint John Bosco saw in the invocation "Help of Christians" a wonderful summation of the mystery of the Blessed Virgin in the Church's plan of salvation; indeed he was prompted to write: "The experience of eighteen centuries demonstrates in a most vivid way that Mary continues most effectively from heaven her maternal and helping mission in the Church which she began on earth" (Maraviglie della Madre di Dio, 1868, p.

Don Bosco was the greatest propagator of the devotion to Mary Help of Christians. To all who asked him for help, he always suggested recourse to the Madonna by a special novena. Many extraordinary favors were granted to those who followed Don Bosco's advice. 1. Recite each day for nine days, three times in honor of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, the "Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be" and the ejaculation "O Sacrament most holy, O sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine." Then recite three times in honor of our Lady the "Hail Holy Queen" with the ejaculation, "Mary Help of Christians, pray for us." 2. Approach the Sacraments of Confession and Communion during the Novena. 3. Make an offering towards the Don Bosco's work of Charity in accordance with your means. NINE (9) DAY NOVENA TO MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS OPENING PRAYER In the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. LET US PRAY Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, and sought your intercession, was left unaided, inspired with this confidence I fly unto you; O Virgin of virgins, my Mother! To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful, O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me.

  • Lesson 4 – Mary, Our Help

Lesson 4 – Mary, Our Help

Lesson 4 – Mary, Our Help Objectives 1. To examine the role of Mary in the life and apostolate of Don Bosco. 2. To reflect on the place of Mary in the prayer life of the Cooperator and the Salesian Family. 3. To reflect on the necessity of asking Mary for the strength needed to be a Salesian. 4. To understand the role of Mary as our Mother, guide, and teacher. Reference: The Salesian Cooperator, Joseph Aubry, SDB The perfect example of this type of spiritual and apostolic life (in the lay Christian) is the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Apostles. While leading a life common to all men, one filled with family concerns and labors, she was always intimately united with her Son and cooperated in the work of the Savior in a manner altogether special. Now that she has been taken up into heaven, “with her maternal charity she cares for these brothers of her Son who are still on their earthly pilgrimage….” All should devoutly venerate her and commend their life and apostolate to her motherly concern. “Mary most holy is the foundress and will be the sustainer of our works.” The Salesian is convinced of the special, unquestioned role which Mary – always the handmaid of God and co-worker with his Son – has had in the life of Don Bosco and of the Congregation. She is the watchful mother of his boys and their “interior teacher.” She is, besides, HIS mother; hence he has for her, the immaculate one and his help, a tender and strong devotion, simple and true, enlightened and dynamically practical.” Reference: PVA Statutes, Chapter 3, Article 20 In Communion with Mary Help of Christians and our Saints 1.

[con titolo per ogni pagina doppia: alla sinistra: PROPER OFFICES alla destra: B.V.M., HELP OF CHRISTIANS] 24 May BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS Principal Patroness of the Society of Saint Francis de Sales, of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, and of the Secular Institute of the Don Bosco Volunteers. Solemnity On many occasions throughout the course of history, Christian people have experienced the protection of the Virgin Mary. The title of Help of Christians, which Don Bosco associated with that of Mary Mother of the Church, is an indication of the special intervention of Mary in the most difficult trials of personal human life, of the Church and of the whole human family. The liturgical celebration was instituted by Pope Pius VII in gratitude for Mary's intervention in a critical period in the history of the Church. Driven out by violence from the See of Rome and held as a prisoner for five years, the Pontiff had implored the help of Mary and had invited all Christians to do the same. Contrary to all expectations he was freed and returned to his See on 24 May 1814. Devotion to Mary Help of Christians was spread far and wide through the work of St John Bosco, and continues to be propagated in the world by the Salesian Family, which recognizes and invokes Mary, Help of Christians as its principal patroness. Evening Prayer I * HYMN Whene'er Christ's people sore beset has been, and ringed with menace of a raging foe, they've glimps'd her gliding from the sky serene, Mary their Queen with succour for their woe.
