Annexure –IV BEST PRACTICE 1. :

SERVICE-LEARNING THROUGH BLOOD DONATION:

Context: In order to encourage the students to participate in Community – based learning our college focused on civil and societal issues and therefore made the students to participate in Blood Donation Camps. This will help the students to make a link between what they have learnt in the classroom and how to actually put them in practice. This practice brings a linkage between knowledge and action and between the resources of the institution and the Community development.

Objectives: To motivate the students to link themselves between the College learning and how to give Societal Service. This can be done through Blood Donation Camp as the students will realise the importance of donating blood for the people who need it during risky situations of health.

Practice: DRM Science College has been organizing Blood Donation Camps since 12 years. Earlier, it was done in collaboration with the Blood Bank of J.J.M. Medical College, Davanagere. Since 3 years, it is being organized in collaboration with Red-Cross Society and Blood Bank of S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences, Davanagere. Since three years, more than 250 students & teachers of our College have donated their blood. In the Academic year of 2015-16, Blood-Donation Camp was organized in our College Library Hall on 12/3/ 2016.

Préparations to Organise Blood-Donation Camp was made after making discussions with Co-ordinations of S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences, Davanagere. Arrangements to check HB counts and other health conditions before taking blood from the donors was made as a necessary Precaution. The Blood Donation Camp was inaugurated by Dr. Shamanuru Shivashankarappa, Honorable Minister of Horticulture and Honorary secretary of Bapuji Educational Aassociation®, Davanagere. Sri A.C.Jayanna, Treasurer of Bapuji Educational Association was the chief guest. Dr. Shashikala Krishnamurthy, Vice Principal, S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences, Davanagere spoke to the students about the benefits of donating blood and the societal service they are doing by saving many life. She explained how blood donation is innocuous. Chief guest appreciated the students and teachers about this programme.

AQAR2015-16 Page 57

Red Ribbon, N.C.C. and N.S.S. Students served as volunteers to conduct the camp. 12 Doctors and supporting staff from S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences helped for the success of the Blood donation camp. Necessary equipment to collect and store the blood was arranged by medical college Authorities. 120 Students had registered to donate the blood but they were not allowed to do so since their HB count was low. After confirmation from the doctors 38 members donated the blood on spot. This blood can be Converted in to 114 units of Blood. Blood donors were given juices and fruits after donating the blood which was arranged by the College authorities. The transfused blood was stored and transported safely by the authorities in charge of the Blood bank of S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences.

Obstacles and évidence of succès: Students lacked motivation in the beginning. So teachers and the members involved had to motivate and encourage the students by filling the gaps ,the students had in their knowledge regarding Blood donation . This was done by Principal & teachers by giving information regarding this in the assembly held in the college premises in the morning and also by visiting classrooms and motivating them. As a result of this motivation, 120 students registered their names to donate the blood. All technical issues in Blood Collection and transportation was taken care of by blood receiving authorities.

The impact: The Blood donation camp made a great impact on the students as well as teachers. It has developed a sense of responsibility among the students towards college and society. It also had an impact on personality development. It has also created a sense of managerial ability among the students for organizing such type of events in the College.

Annexure –IV BEST PRACTICE 2. :

1. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES THROUGH- LEADERS ACCELERATING DEVELOPMENT (LEAD).

Goal:

The vision of our college aims at providing value based education ensuring complete development of human potentials ever in the service of mankind. The extension activities serve as one of the best means to develop leadership and thereby fixing up the responsibilities which are socially significant. These activities also help to develop certain skills such as communicative skills, interpersonal relations, convincing the unwilling to budge, cultivating values etc. It is an important responsibility of the institution to channelize the youth energy for constructive purposes and make them involve actively in socially useful activities.

Context:

India is the second largest country as far as its population is concerned. But the irony is that the population is never treated as a source for the development of the country till now. Our young population, is no doubt talented and ready to work if proper guidance and avenues are shown. In this context, the institution felt that it is necessary to make use of the human resource of the college for social development. Incidentally, programme manager of the Deshpande Foundation, Hubli , visited the college with an intension to having a tie up with our institution to implement their projects through our students. Realizing the necessity and the importance of such linkages, the institution came forward to sign a MOU – 20/07/2011 with Deshpande Foundation. LEAD cell of the college was established to conduct these activities. The Coordinator and members of this cell look into the activities of this cell.

The task projects to be undertaken are designed in consultation with the enrolled students and the programme manager. In all 42 such useful projects have been implemented ever since we signed an agreement with the LEAD up to academic year 2014 – 15.

AQAR2015-16 Page 59

The practice:
