District Awards Chapter Distance Award

The Chapter Distance Award will be presented to a chapter of Tau Beta Sigma traveling from their school to Blocks, Leadership Conference, and Membership Education Retreat based on the mileage chart provided below. The amount of active and prospective members present from each chapter will be multiplied by the number of miles from their school to the various locations throughout the year, and then added together to get the total number of miles traveled. Chapters do not need to apply. The ​ Tau Beta Sigma Vice President of Special Projects will track all progress.

Chapter Participation Award

The Chapter Participation Award will be presented to the chapter of Tau Beta Sigma with the highest percentage of active members in attendance at the six district events throughout the academic year: Membership Education Retreat, District Leadership Conference, West Block, South Block, North Block, and Convention. Active, associate, and prospective members will be counted for this award; no alumni member will be counted toward this award. The overall percentage for the Chapter Participation Award will be calculated by taking the number of eligible members who participated in the event divided by the number of active members of the chapter at the time of the event. The percentages for each event will be averaged to gain the final percentage of participation. Chapters do not need to apply. The Tau Beta Sigma Vice President ​ of Special Projects will track all progress.

Counselor’s Servant Leadership Award

The Counselors’ Servant Leadership Award is modeled after the unique accomplishments of Carolyn McCambridge. Throughout her involvement in Tau Beta Sigma, Carolyn served at the chapter level as Recording Secretary and Vice President of Membership, at the district level as Vice President of Membership, and at the national level as CFR. She then served as the North Central District Counselor from 2006-2012, and on the Tau Beta Sigma Board of Trustees from 2013-2017, 2017-2019, and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Throughout her extensive career in Tau Beta Sigma, Carolyn visited chapters from coast to coast, mentored countless individuals, and empowered over 26 North Central District officers to accomplish their unique goals and help develop them into mature servant-leaders to the sorority.

This award exists to recognize individuals whom, like Carolyn, have such a desire to serve they cannot help but to become a leader. Recipients must have made outstanding contributions to collegiate bands, to developing other Sisters’ growth into leaders, and to moving Tau Beta Sigma further towards accomplishing our National Mission and Vision Statement.

Robert K. Greenleaf explains servant leadership as “emphasizing the abilities of an individual’s collaboration, trust, empathy, and ethical use of power versus that of seeking leadership for power, prestige, or wealth. At heart, the individual is a servant first, making the conscious decision to lead to better serve others, not to increase their own power. The objective is to enhance the growth of individuals in the organization and increase teamwork and personal involvement.” These qualities are an embodiment of the leadership, service, and character we strive for in Tau Beta Sigma, and we seek to recognize persons who exemplify these outstanding traits throughout our district.

Any senior graduating during the current academic year in good standing with the sorority may be nominated for this award. This form, along with two accompanying letter of recommendation, serves as the application for the Counselors’ Servant Leadership Award.

A person may nominate any active graduating senior who exemplifies the purposes and ideals of Tau Beta Sigma. The attached letter of recommendation should explain why this individual is deserving of this award, including their leadership and service activities, as well as any other pertinent information. The recipient of this award will be chosen at the discretion of the District Counselors, Counselors’ Cup Panel, and the National Officers present at District Convention. The award will be presented at banquet.

This Form and Accompanying Letters of Recommendation are due no later than 11:59 ​ pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, February 18th, 2020.

Future Leadership Award

This award is for a new member of the chapter or a member who has not held a leadership role within the chapter, district, or alumni executive boards. This person shows tremendous leadership, true selflessness, and a great sisterly attitude. They go above and beyond already and are full of potential to become a future chapter President, Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Special Projects, or District Officer. Applications must be completed by an upperclassman and seconded by a member of the executive board who is not the nominator.

Kathy Stevens Award

Kathy Stevens was a member of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at Ohio University. From the beginning, Kathy was a leader in our organization. She was an outstanding active member and continued her career as Counselor of District VII until 1984. The brothers of District VII (NCD) gave Kathy the gift of Honorary Membership to Kappa Kappa Psi. She was also made an Honorary of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Wichita State in 1987. After relocating to the Midwest District, she continued her involvement with Tau Beta Sigma and served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1983-1987.

th After a struggle with cancer, Kathy passed away September 5 ,​ 1989 in Wichita, ​ Kansas. Throughout her career with Tau Beta Sigma, she truly exemplified the purposes and ideals of our organization through her continued leadership and service.

This award is designed to recognize outstanding individuals who have continued their service to Tau Beta Sigma and bands at least five years beyond their undergraduate careers. A letter of recommendation serves as the application for the Kathy Stevens Award. Each chapter may nominate a sponsor, advisor, alumnus, or other individual who exemplifies the purposes and ideals of Tau Beta Sigma. The attached letter of recommendation should explain why this individual is deserving of this award, including their leadership and service activities, as well as any other pertinent information.

The recipient of this award will be chosen at the discretion of the District Counselors, Counselor’s Cup Panel, and the National Officers present at District Convention. The award will be presented at banquet.

The recommendation letter is due to the District Counselors via email ([email protected]) by Tuesday, February 18th at 11:59 pm Eastern ​ ​ ​ ​ Time. Late entries will not be accepted. ​

Strength in Diversity Award The Strength in Diversity Award is intended to recognize a chapter that exemplifies outstanding accessibility and inclusivity in a specific recruitment event put on in the 2019-2020 year. This event’s excellent planning and execution should be focused on making Tau Beta Sigma open to everyone regardless of ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or presentation, race or ethnicity, national origin, dietary restrictions, religion, age, marital status, or veteran status. This event may be a modification of a previously existing event or an entirely new event. Applications will be sent to chapter VPM’s in the form of a reflection of the 2019-2020 year.

This award application is due by Tuesday, February 18th at 11:59 pm Eastern Time.

Outstanding Service Project Award (OSPA)

This award recognizes chapter who have designed and implemented an exceptional service project to assist the band program of their respective school. This award is designed to reinforce the purposes of the sorority and fraternity. A questionnaire asking about specific parts of the project will be a part of the application. Chapters will be given the opportunity to give a short presentation about their service project to the District Councils at District Convention. In the event of a large pool of applications, applications may be narrowed down to a set of finalists before convention. The projects will be reviewed, and a winner will be selected by the District Councils. In the case of a tie, the Governors and Counselors will decide the winner of the award. If the committee does not deem a project outstanding, the committee reserves the right to not present the award.

​Special Project Assistance Monies (SPAM)

This award is conducted jointly by the North Central District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. This award is targeted for, but not limited to, smaller chapters. The award is to assist in the completion of an existing project that benefits the entire band program and is outside the realm of administrative fiscal responsibility. All chapters interested in district funding should complete the SPAM Financial Assistance Form. ​ ​ Chapters can apply for all or part of the total amount available. Submissions must be ​ completed by Tuesday, February 18th at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. No late applications will be allowed.

A questionnaire asking about the specific parts of the project will be a part of the application. Applicants will be given the opportunity to present to the District Councils at District Convention. In the event of a large pool of applications, applications may be narrowed down to a set of finalists prior to convention. The projects will be reviewed, and a winner will be selected by the District Councils. In the case of a tie, the Governors and Counselors will decide the winner of the grant. If the committee does not deem a project outstanding, the committee reserves the right not to present the grant. The basis for selection of a project is outlined by the criteria below: • The project must have a beneficial effect on the entire band program • The primary purpose of the project is to service the band, not the chapter • There must be involvement of as many actives and prospective members as possible

The maximum allotment is $400. Any excess money that is left after the deadline will be placed in a discretionary fund that will be used by the District Officers as needed. All monies will be allocated by a decision of the joint District Council. A contract will be developed, and when signed, will bind the chapter to the terms of the project. A halfway point progress report summarizing the current progress must be sent to each District Treasurer, Governors, and Counselors. At the following District Convention, receipts should be present and a short written overview of the completed project should be sent to the Vice President of Special Projects and the Vice President of Programs. Photographs and visual aids should be presented if possible so that the district can see how their money is being spent.

Reading Band Student Conductor

To apply to be a student conductor, please fill out this form by Tuesday, February ​ ​ ​ ​ 18th at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. In addition, please send the letter of ​ recommendation to the Tau Beta Sigma North Central District Vice President of Special Projects, Kat Grant, at [email protected]. ​ ​

Essay Compose an essay of a minimum of 100 words describing why you would like to ​ be chosen as a Student Conductor for the North Central District Reading Band. Be sure to include a summary of your conducting experience. Please include any conducting courses you have taken or ensembles you have previously conducted.

Conducting Repertoire Please indicate what piece you have prepared and describe ​ your experience with the piece. You will be required to supply the score along with all parts for full band. As part of this application, please scan the score and all parts and submit them via the Google Form in PDF format. Recommendations Submit one letter of recommendation from teachers or ​ professors who can speak about your conducting abilities as well as information about your musicianship. Recommendations should be emailed directly from your reference to [email protected]. Please have your reference notate “Student ​ ​ Conductor Application” in the subject line.

Most Spirited Chapter of the Year Award

The Most Spirited Chapter of the Year Award will be presented at District Convention to the chapter of the North Central District that utilizes the most themed hashtags throughout the year on Instagram. Chapters must follow the Chapter Challenge Guidelines. The winner will be determined by the District Secretary/Treasurer.

Most Spirited Convention Chapter The Most Spirited Convention Chapter Award will be presented to a chapter in the North Central District that attends District Convention and exhibits extreme sisterhood and spirit. This chapter shows their school spirit and make sure that their chapter’s voice is heard throughout the week! The winner of the award will take home the spirit stick. Chapters do not need to apply. The winner will be determined by the Sisterhood and Spirit Committee at the North Central District Convention.

Most Spirited Convention Sister

The Most Spirited Convention Sister Award will be awarded to the sister that shows the most spirit at District Convention. This sister spends time getting to know sisters from other chapters, is excited to attend all events, and shows their school spirit to make their home chapter proud! They embody the 8&5 and are truly a joy to be around. Chapters do not need to apply. The winner will be determined by the ​ Sisterhood and Spirit Committee at the North Central District Convention.
