Principal’s Message After last week’s busy week with two trips to Kerang the timetable for this week looks far less cluttered.

Athletics - On Friday Scott, Jack and Bree will be travelling to Kerang for the Zone Athletics. Our students will need to be at the Kerang Technical High School by around 9am. Qualifiers from 10 to 13 will be competing against students from the Kerang District. Qualifying for this level of Athletics is a great achievement. Scott and Jack qualified in three events and Bree in 8 events. The students are only allowed to compete in two or three events. Mr. Sait will also be attending to assist with the Long Jump.

Book Parade - The Sneetches looked absolutely fabulous. (Thanks Mr. Sait for your creative work!) Our students did a fantastic job with their books. We had quite a few books shortlisted. Special congratulations to Jack and Tegan, who won in their categories.

Indonesian Cultural Day - Planning is underway for an Indonesian Cultural Day at Lake Charm which will possibly be held in the last week of term. Kerang Primary School students will join us for the day.

Healthy October - During the month of October; Lake Charm Primary will be promoting Health through daily morning walks (or runs) and healthy eating. On the 23rd of October Lake Charm will combine with Quambatook Group School for A Walk To School Activity organised through Vic Health and the Gannawarra Shire.

At school our students will be investigating healthy eating. Students and teachers will be creating healthy lunches and everyone will be encouraged to consume lots of fruit and vegetables. Fruity Fridays will be back!

Junior Public Speaking Dinner – All students who participated in the Junior Public Speaking Competition earlier in the term are invited to attend the Lake Charm Lion’s Club meeting on Tuesday the 12th of September from 7-7.30pm at The Mystic Park Hotel. Students who attend will be given a free meal and anyone else accompanying, meals are at bistro prices. Please let Jeff or James know if you’ll be going along as the Lion’s Club needs numbers by Friday the 11th September.

End of Term Footy – As is the custom, we will be having our Annual Footy Day on the last day of term. All family and friends are welcome to come along and join in a Parents v. Students football match! This will be accompanied by a lovely BBQ. On a side note – Footy Tipping at school is heating up! With only 1 round left to go we are very close to announcing a winner! Go the Mighty Bombers and Demons! Classroom Happenings This week the students have been translating letters that arrived from Indonesia. A few weeks ago our students sent letters to students in a school in West Java, Indonesia. This week we received replies. The students (with a little help from Mr. M) did a great job translating the letters. Mr. Sait even had a go and impressed us all by how much he has learned this year.

In the 3-6 class the students are doing ‘Quick write’. In ‘Quick Write’ they choose a topic, spend 3 minutes planning, 15 minutes independently writing, 5 minutes rereading and self-editing, and then share their writing with the class. The students did a great job on Monday writing on various topics eg. koalas, history of Lake Charm, steam engines, pencils, the dictionary, and mud. In Mathematics our major focus is on Multiplication.

Last week in the P-2 class we made Pancakes to assist with our learning about Procedural Writing. We used an app on the iPads to make a Snapguide and this week we compared it to our own writing. We continue this type of writing this week. In Maths we have been learning about Linus the Minus and that when he is around, you always end up with less!

Koalas - Koalas eat gum leaves. Koalas live in in in the bush landscapes. Koalas are fuzzy, cute, grey and sometimes brown. In the daytime koalas get their water from gum leaves. Koalas are nocturnal animals.

Sometimes at night koalas move to new trees to find more gum leaves. Koalas don’t move from tree to tree at daytime because they might get eaten by dingos, wild cats, dogs, wedge tale eagles, pythons, Tasmanian devils and foxes. At night time koalas have to be careful or they might get attacked by powerful owls.

At the Adelaide Zoo when I went there 3 years ago I got to hold a baby koala. The baby koala felt so soft, so cuddly and so cute. On the way home from Adelaide I saw a lot of koalas. By Kate Whorwood.

FUNDRAISING Earn & Learn Stickers – Woolies Don’t forget to ask at the checkout for your stickers. Future Events We will be holding a Trivia night on 17th October, start organising your tables of 10 now. Cost will be $15.00 per person, loads of prizes and fun on the night. These nights are a lot of fun as well as raising much needed funds for our school. Pop-up Market will be held on 29th November.

Lake Charm History - The first European party to arrive in the lake charm area was led by Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1836. He and his party camped on the shores of Lake Kelly. A few months after his arrival people started moving in to the area to take up

land holdings. By the 1850s a horseback mail run had been set up in between and . A pine log building had also been built. The owner was a man called William Scott. The building was called the Kangaroo Inn. In the 1860s Burke and Wills came through the area on their ill-fated attempt to reach the Gulf of Carpentaria. They stayed at the nearby Reedy Lake Homestead. In 1877 a brick building was built beside the Kangaroo Inn and was called the Lake Charm Hotel. In 1879 a temporary school was set up in the Lake Charm Hotel where classes were held. By December 1879 a new school had been built on village reserve which was the hill in between Racecourse Lake and Lake Charm. In 1891 a hall was built which was titled Lake Charm Mechanics institute, Library and Hall.

In 1913 a Baptist Church was built on village reserve where the town had developed. In 1915 a new school was built on Racecourse Lake because rabbits had started to destroy the old school. Lake Charm East also had a school built in the 1920s but it didn’t last for long. By the 1840s the town was starting to move over to Racecourse Lake, buildings like the hall and Baptist Church. Meanwhile the other part of town on the railway line had an Anglican Church, a general store and post office called the Commonwealth Store and a railway station that was quite successful. The Lake Charm we see today was starting to come into shape. By the 1970s the last ticket at the railway station was sold and eventually the railway station folded. Not long after the railway station had closed a new post office and general store was opened which is still operating today. The caravan parks, Pelican Waters, Foreshore and Lake Charm had been formed along with the yacht club, Power Boat Club and Tennis Club.

Lake Charm today has a lot of its historical buildings still intact and a lot of new ones. Such as Lake Charm Primary School.

Pencils - Pencils come in lots of different colours and sizes. Some can even have more than one colour in it. Pencils can be used in lots of different ways, writing and drawing and tracing things.

Once my sister put it behind her ear to make her look cool, but I never think she looks cool. Some people can balance pencils on their nose.

I use pencils a lot, almost every day. Once I tried to sharpen a pencil with a knife and the knife slipped and cut me. At my old school I had an orange pencil that was about 2cm tall and everyone in my class would sing a song about it. Pencils have a type of lead inside them that makes the mark on the paper when you use it. Around the lead there is usually wood but there can be other materials like plastic as well. Some pencils can have rubbers at the end of them.

Boxing - Boxing is when you have to fight your opponent. Boxing is a sport you can play. You have to wear special gloves so you don’t break bones. There is a lot of blood and gore. There are different punches like uppercut and jab. In the olden days they

would not have worn gloves. There are different kinds of boxing. There is cage fighting ring and lots more. When you watch it makes you want to jump up in excitement. It can help when you are in danger and when you’re in a fight. There are at least six movies about boxing. You can watch it on TV, phone, computer, IPod, IPad and IPhone. I did boxing in Tasmania before I moved here but I still do it at my house and I told my boxing teacher and he said he is proud of me.

Online Newsletter In Term 4 we would like to trial emailing the newsletter to as many families as possible instead of families receiving a hardcopy. We hope this will reduce the monetary cost of the newsletter but also reduce our environmental footprint at school, something we strive hard for. If the school doesn’t already have your families email, could you please speak to Jeff or James or email [email protected] Web Site www.lakecharmps.vic.edu.au Have you had a look at the new website yet? The site contains policies, newsletters, fundraising information and other interesting items.
