Abstract: The research paper ―Fictional narratives of Patrick White‖ with special reference to The Vivisector contains a brief description of fictional and factual narratives, an introduction and analysis of some major works done by Patrick White and on the basis of that analysis his major themes were also discussed. His life and experiences and the major themes of his writings is briefly presented. The writing style, characters, plot and settings are some essential tools for every writer that is why it becomes mandatory to be discussed with reference to his major works. Special reference is given to his eighth novel The Vivisector (1970) because of many reasons and one of those reason is the protagonist of this novel ‗Hurtle Duffield‘ who is a painter but not an ordinary painter but a painter with an exceptional ability to look into the reality of a person. This character presents the conception of an artist, also he was a megalomaniac certainly and a Luciferian hero. He is a reflection of White‘s own personality and their life and experiences are so close to each other that it looks like we are reading Whites autobiography. F.O.O.D. (Fighting Order Over Disorder): An Analysis of Food and Its Significance in the Australian Novels of Christina Stead, Patrick White and Thea Astley. Jane Frugtneit A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Humanities James Cook University August 2007 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to find a correlation between food as symbol and food as necessity, as represented in selected Australian novels by Christina Stead, Patrick White and Thea Astley. Food as a springboard to a unique interpretation of the selected novels has been under-utilised in academic research. Although comparatively few novels were selected for study, on the basis of fastidiousness, they facilitated a rigorous hermeneutical approach to the interpretation of food and its inherent symbolism. The principle behind the selection of these novels lies in the complexity of the prose and how that complexity elicits the “transformative powers of food” (Muncaster 1996, 31). The thesis examines both the literal and metaphorical representations of food in the novels and relates how food is an inextricable part of ALL aspects of life, both actual and fictional. Food sustains, nourishes and, intellectually, its many components offer unique interpretative tools for textual analysis. Indeed, the overarching structure of the thesis is analogous with the processes of eating, digestion and defecation. For example, following a discussion of the inextricable link between food, quest and freedom in Chapter One, which uncovers contrary attitudes towards food in the novels discussed, the thesis presents a more complex psychoanalytic theory of mental disorders related to food in Chapter Two. -

Rich people could provide their children with food, nice clothes, a warm house and an education. While some people were rich, others were poor. Poor people had no money and no food. They had to work as servants for the rich. Poor children did not attend school. When machines were invented, many people lost their jobs because workers were no longer needed. Health conditions during the 1700s were very poor. There was no clean water due to the pollution from factories. Manure from horses attracted flies, which spread diseases. A lack of medical care meant many people died from these diseases. Life in Britain During the 1700s • The overcrowded city streets were not a nice place to be during the 1700s. High levels of poverty resulted in a lot of crime. • Harsh punishments were put in place to try to stop the crime. People were convicted for crimes as small as stealing bread. Soon, the prisons became overcrowded with convicts. • One of the most common punishments was transportation to another country. Until 1782, Britain sent their convicts to America. After the War of Independence in 1783, America refused to take Britain’s convicts. -

AUSTRALIAN HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY, 5,1987 The Excavation of Buildings in the Early Township of Parramatta, New South Wales, 1790-1820s EDWARD HIGGINBOTHAM This paper describes the excavation of a convict hut, erected in 1790 in Parramatta, together with an adjoining contemporary out-building or enclosure. It discusses the evidence for repair, and secondary occupation by free persons, one of whom is tentatively identified. The site produced the first recognised examples of locally manufactured earthenware. The historical and archaeological evidence for pottery manufacture in New South Wales between 1790 and 1830 is contained in an appendix. INTRODUCTION Before any archaeological excavation could take place, it was necessary to research the development of the township In September 1788 the wheat crop failed at Sydney Cove from historical documentation, then to establish whether any and also at Norfolk Island, partly because the seed had not items merited further investigation, and finally to ascertain been properly stored during the voyage of the First Fleet. New South Wales Inquests, 1819; 10 June 2008 1 SYD1819 SYDNEY GAZETTE, 10/04/1819 Court of Criminal Jurisdiction Wylde J.A., 7 April 1819 This was a day of serious trial for the murder of WILLIAM COSGROVE , a settlor and district constable upon the Banks of the South Creek, on the first of the present month; by the discharge of the contents of a musket loaded with slugs into his body, of which wounds he died the following day. The prisoners were TIMOTHY BUCKLEY by whom the gun was fired; DAVID BROWN , and TIMOTHY FORD , all of whom had been in the Colony but six of seven months, and prisoners in the immediate employee of Government, and who unhappily had not renounced those propensities which sooner or later were to lead them to an unhappy end. The first witness called was THOMAS COSGROVE , brother of the deceased, whose testimony was conclusive of the fact. The witness stated, that his murdered brother was a district constable at the South Creek; and that he having seen, and believing the three prisoners at the bar to be bushrangers, requested him, the witness, to joining in pursuit of the suspected persons; all of which was readily compiled with, and a pursuit accordingly commenced. This was about one in the afternoon; the deceased went up to the three men (the prisoners at the bar), and found then in conversation with two young men who were brothers of the name of York, one of them a son in law of the deceased. The deceased called to the prisoners at the bar, declaring his willingness to point them out the road to the place they were enquiring for, namely the "Five mile Farm;" but appearing conscious that they were armed bushrangers, he hesitated not to rescue their giving themselves up to him, he being a district constable.
