It is sometimes referred to as a 11Diplos Horos" which means a double dance" or two dances put together to make one. This particular version is from the village of BotiA (Palai6iirgos) in Arkadia. The song and the steps were learned from~ great-uncle Thfros Papayiorgas and my grandfather Yinnis Pap,viorgas as they did it in their village of Botia. The,e are other possible tunes for this dance, but the one they used was always "Yiorgis O Ma.rathiono's 11 (George the Ma.rathonian). Basically, this is a and a tsarnikos joined together. From the time of its record debut in the USA on the old Linden label a decade ago, this little Danish mixer dance has been a real hit, not only with folk dancers, but among square dancers as well. For indeed the steps and figures are nearly identical to those used in American squares: "to the center and back", "Grand R & L", 11 sw:i.ng your partner". Yet there still prevails an unmistakable element of typical Danish dance hum.or over the whole thing. An 11 easy" dance with a light, and catchy melody, this is an ideal number for be ginners in both folk and square dancing.

FAMILIE SEKSTUR Pronunciation: fa-MILL-yeh SEKS-toor. Translation: Family Sixsome Nationality: Danish Region: from Praesto Mu.sic: 6/8 Recording: Aqua Viking V 400 a.

Formation: Cples. Won M1 s R, bgng in large ring facing center, all hands joined at shoulder height, elbows V~shaped so that dancers a re faily close together. Position: Simple ring hold; Danish waltz pcsn (as described). Footwork: Parallel thruout; side buss, walking, buzz turn. Character: Light and sprightly

Introduction: Circle L~ 1-8 In ring formation a.11 dance sidewd to L ( CW) with 16 si de buzz steps, thus: facing center, toes pointing inwd, cross R in front of L, stepping on R with slight dip (ct. 1), draw L dir ectly in ba ck of R (Ct. 2), transfer weight to L (ct. 3); continue, taking 2 steps to ea meas. Steps should be small, light. Keep elbows 'bent, and lean slightly back for better momentum..

(Note: This is an "introductio;n11 only, and is not repeated.)

B. In and out: 9-10 Hands still joined at shoulder level, all walk twd center with 4 steps, gradually raising a rms so they are nearly full height by 4th step, at which time a slight "compliment 11 or not with head is given to "the house 11 •

11-12 Return to outer edge with 4 steps bkwd, lowering hands to shldr height again, giving a "compliment" to own ptnr on last step.

13-16 Repeat action of 9-12 above.

c.Grand Chain~ 17-2J+ Facing ptnr, join R hands at shoulder level, and continue arnd circle with a "Grand R & L" (M moving CCW, W CW), keeping hands at shldr height thruout •

The chain is greatly facilitated by counting aloud from 1 - 7 for ea person met, bgng with own original ptnr as No. 1, and retaining No. 7 as new ptnr.

A. Swing partner:

1-8 In 1closed Danish waltz posn (Mvs Land wvs R hands joined and extended at arms length straight out from shldr), swing new ptnr with 16 buzz steps; finish with this new ptnr on MVs R, and all rejoin hands to form single ring as in B above. 1972 Oglebay Institute Instructors: Conny Taylor, Fall Folk Dance Camp, Wheeling, West Virginia Page 17 of 30 Jim and Pat Tait FAMILIE SEKSTUR ( continued)

Repeat dance starting with B (in and out), which is followed by C (chain) and thereafter A (swing ptnr), and so on in ABC order to end of music. Thus the Introduction, which is not repeat ed, merely replaces the partner swing with a 11 Fa.mily Circle II the first time thru.

During the Grand Cha.in, it 2 s more fun to count in Da nish, so here 1 s how it goes~

in other Alpine countries o It is a patterned combination of waltz and

11 dreher 11 or pivot steps, and the pattern varies with the particular title.

The dance most done is the easist of all zwiefachers 11 Unser Alte Kath" -

cometimes called simply 11Alte Kath" - old Kate. The pattern of this is 2 waltzes and 2 single steps (which comprise one dreher or pivot turn). The dance is usually done turning constantly CW while progressing CCW, but it can also be done turning only once on the dreher and using the waltz steps to balance easily forward and back - a nice rest if you are

a bit dizzyi There are ma!JiV more complex zwiefachers on records, and once you feel easy with the simplest, you might like to try counting out a few of the more complicated ones~~ Here are a few titles of zwiefachers with their record numbers: Unser Alte Kath Folk Dancer MH 2017

Wintergruen MH 2014

Sechsundreissiger MlI 2018 Die Alte Kath Eisenkeilnest Schneider Kogler EP 56906 Der Wirt vo Stoa

Kogler has also published at least four more records, each with four or more different :zM_iefachers - the variety is endlessI Don't forget that when you dance these, it will' work best if the man steps back on his left foot to begin the first step, whether waltz or pivot, and if both partners step well forward between their partner's feet ·

whenever they step with the right foot on the pivot or on the first step of the waltz. Enjoy them - they're funi
