Compiled by the U.S. Department of State, with the full cooperation of the foreign missions in Washington, it is offered as a convenience to organizations and persons who must deal with consular representatives of foreign governments. It has been designed with particular attention to the requirements of government agencies, state tax officials, international trade organizations, chambers of commerce, and judicial authorities who have a continuing need for handy access to this type of information. Trade with other regions of the world has become an increasingly vital element in the economy of the United States. The machinery of this essential commerce is complicated by numerous restrictions, license requirements, quotas, and other measures adopted by the individual countries. Since the regulations affecting both trade and travel are the particular province of the consular service of the nations involved, reliable information as to entrance requirements, consignment of goods, details of transshipment, and, in many instances, suggestions as to consumer needs and preferences may be obtained at the foreign consular offices throughout the United States.

  • THE CONSULATE GENERAL from the UNIFICATION of ITALY to the PRESENT (By RICHARD N. JULIANI, Ph
The Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia A Bridge between Two Cultures Richard N. Juliani, Ph.D. The history of the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia provides us with knowledge of the place of government agencies in the lives of Italians in an American city as well as a better understanding of diplomatic relations between Italy and the United States. From its early origins to today, it has not only served as an agency for commercial, scientific, scholarly and artistic programs, but also as an influence on the continued identity and cohesion of Italians and Italian Americans as a community. The PreUnification Period (1820-1859) Unification and the new Kingdom (1859-1880) The Era of Mass Immigration (1881-1921) The Darkness before the Dawn (1922-1945) The Present (1946-2012) The PreUnification Period (1820-1859) Even during the years prior to the founding of Italy as a unified and sovereign nation state, several of the various political domains of the peninsula sent or appointed representatives to represent their interests in the young United States. Beginning with Goffredo Deabbate in 1820, the Kingdom of Sardinia had a consular office in Philadelphia. Succeeded by Chevalier Ignazio Vincenzo Cavaradossy five years later, it was a relatively quiet period of diplomatic relations, perhaps made somewhat notable by the presence of Angelo Garibaldi, the brother of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the great military leader of later years, as Vice Consul. When Angelo Garibaldi died in 1835 in this city, his last will identified his friendship with Dominico Morelli, serving as the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

NOVEMBER 2015 Visit us at: http://lancaster-italian-cultural-society.org L’Osservatore Lancastriano President's Message Cari Amici, I hope everyone had a very nice summer but it went so fast. Italian lessons started in September and are going very well. We are considering a 2nd class if we have additional interest. The Ladies Luncheons began on the first Wednesday in October and will continue on the first Wednesday of every month through June 2016. The Frank Sinatra night at the Barnstormers game was very well received and everyone who attended had a great time. Thanks to LICS members Anthony De Marco of the Barnstormers and Valerie Faiola for all their efforts. The summer picnic was very successful and was attended by 114 LICS members and guests. Thanks to everyone who brought desserts and salad items. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment, provided by Dee Viscardi’s grandson, Anthony Scheuerman and his ensemble, The Performers at Lebanon Valley College. The Vendemmia trip to Wilmington, Delaware was on October 11th at the Du Pont Estate. All who attended had a wonderful time. The food and the wine were plentiful and delicious. November 11th is Veterans Day. To honor our veterans, I would ask everyone to take a moment of silence at noon on that day, bow our heads, and remember those who helped preserve our freedom which we enjoy every day. This is my last message for 2015. Therefore, I would like to wish you and your family "BUON NATALE E FELICE ANNO NUOVO." Sempre Amici, Charlie ************************* Knocking on Doors in Florence Florence, Tuscany - If you’re rushing from the Uffizi to the Duomo or from your hotel to the Accademia or from Ponte Vecchio to Pitti Palace… or if you have your nose buried in a travel guide or map, you just might be overlooking some of Florence’s inviting examples of craftsmanship and handiwork.

A HISTORICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IN THE WASHINGTON, D.C., METROPOLITAN AREA, INCLUDING MONTGOMERY AND PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTIES, MARYLAND, AND ALEXANDRIA AND ARLINGTON AND FAIRFAX COUNTIES, VIRGINIA Compiled by Richard Longstreth 2001, last revised 21 April 2019 This listing focuses on historical studies, with an emphasis is on scholarly work published during the past forty years. I have also included some popular histories due to the wealth of information they afford and monographs on out-of-town architects who made a major contribution locally. Institutional histories are generally not included unless they cover the physical dimension in some detail. The geographic area covered outside the District of Columbia encompasses Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland and Arlington and Fairfax counties as well as the independent municipalities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia. Studies focusing on building or landscape types, aside from houses, are generally listed under the appropriate typological category even if their subjects are located Maryland or Virginia. The categories were developed for convenient reference, but most listings could easily be in at least two such groupings, so scanning the range of potential categories is recommended. Additional material on Maryland can be found in Richard Longstreth, comp., "A Historical Bibliography of the Built Environment in Baltimore and Maryland," on this website. Repositories consulted include the Alexandria Public Library, Special Collections; Arlington
